Thomas Gretener aus Cham fotografiert seit rund 50 Jahren. Auf der Suche nach neuen Ausdrucksformen stiess er vor zehn Jahren auf das Prinzip der «camera obscura»: Fotografieren ohne Linse, dafür mit einem Aufsatz, der wenig Licht auf den Datenträger lässt. Die Digitalkamera wird zur Lochkamera. Die Brennweite: unspektakuläre 45 mm. Die Blende: lichtschwache f / 180, da braucht es viel Licht oder ein Stativ. Die Technik wird zweitranig, dafür kommt dem Beobachten grössere Bedeutung zu. Die Fotografie wendet sich einem minimalistischen Prinzip zu. Linien und Formen bestimmen das Bildmotiv. Die Farben verschwimmen und die Fotografie wird zum Bild: Malen mit Licht. Die Abbildungsqualität ist bescheiden: Die Bilder werden als unscharf empfunden, Überstrahlungen und Farbfehler verfremden sie und sich bewegende Objekte verfliessen. Dafür weisen die Fotos eine anmutige Ästhetik mit schöner Tonalität auf. Sie stehen in starkem Kontrast zu den heute gängigen scharfen Bildern moderner Kameras.

A la recherche de nouvelles formes d'expression, il a découvert il y a dix ans le principe de la "camera obscura" : photographier sans lentille, mais avec un embout qui laisse passer peu de lumière sur le support de données. L'appareil photo numérique devient un sténopé. La distance focale : un 45 mm peu spectaculaire. L'ouverture : faible f / 180, il faut beaucoup de lumière ou un trépied. La technique devient secondaire, mais l'observation revêt une plus grande importance. La photographie se tourne vers un principe minimaliste. Les lignes et les formes déterminent le sujet de l'image. Les couleurs s'estompent et la photographie devient un visuel : peindre avec la lumière. La qualité de l'image est modeste : Les visuels sont perçus comme flous, les surimpressions et les erreurs de couleur les dénaturent et les objets en mouvement s'écoulent. En revanche, les photos présentent une esthétique gracieuse avec une belle tonalité. Elles contrastent fortement avec les visuels actuels des appareils photo modernes.

Dieci anni fa, nella sua ricerca di nuove forme di espressione, si è imbattuto nel principio della "camera oscura": la fotografia senza obiettivo, ma con un attacco che lascia passare poca luce sul supporto dati. La fotocamera digitale diventa una macchina fotografica a foro stenopeico. La lunghezza focale: un non spettacolare 45 mm. L'apertura del diaframma: basso f/180, quindi è necessaria molta luce o un treppiede. La tecnica diventa secondaria, ma l'osservazione diventa più importante. La fotografia si orienta verso un principio minimalista. Linee e forme determinano il motivo. I colori si confondono e la fotografia diventa un quadro: una pittura con la luce. La qualità dell'immagine è modesta: Le immagini sono percepite come sfocate, la sovraesposizione e gli errori di colore le allontanano e gli oggetti in movimento scorrono. D'altra parte, le foto hanno un'estetica aggraziata con una bella tonalità. Sono in netto contrasto con le immagini nitide delle moderne fotocamere.
Thomas Gretener from Cham has been taking photographs for around 50 years. Ten years ago, in his search for new forms of expression, he came across the principle of the "camera obscura": photography without a lens, but with an attachment that lets little light onto the data carrier. The digital camera becomes a pinhole camera. The focal length: an unspectacular 45 mm. The aperture: low f / 180, so you need a lot of light or a tripod. The technique becomes secondary, but observation becomes more important. Photography turns to a minimalist principle. Lines and shapes determine the motif. The colors become blurred and the photograph becomes a visual: painting with light. The image quality is modest: The visuals are perceived as blurred, overexposure and color errors alienate them and moving objects flow. On the other hand, the photos have a graceful aesthetic with a beautiful tonality. They stand in stark contrast to the sharp visuals of today's modern cameras.
