Die erste umfassende Retrospektive des ghanaischen Fotografen James Barnor (Accra, 1929) dokumentiert seine lange Karriere, in deren Lauf er in allen fotografischen Genres tätig war: von Studioporträts bis zu journalistischen Reportagen, von Modefotografie bis zur street photography. Seine Aufnahmen zeichnen sich aus durch einen offenen Blick und eine spontane Herangehensweise, sie erzählen von den sozialen und politischen Veränderungen, die die Geschichte seines Landes sowie diejenige der afrikanischen Gemeinschaft in London geprägt haben. Die Ausstellung präsentiert Werke aus dem Archiv des Künstlers, darunter zahlreiche unveröffentlichte Bilder, mit Schwerpunkt auf den Jahren 1950-1980.

Le MASI Lugano présente la rétrospective la plus exhaustive jamais consacrée au photographe ghanéen James Barnor (Accra, 1929). Conçue par les Serpentine Galleries de Londres, l’exposition documente la longue carrière de Barnor, qui a expérimenté tous les genres photographiques : des portraits en studio au reportage journalistique, des éditoriaux de mode à la photographie de rue. À travers ses images, caractérisés par un regard franc et une approche spontanée, Barnor raconte les changements politiques et sociaux qui ont marqué l’histoire récente de son pays ainsi que celle de la communauté africaine de Londres. L’exposition présente des œuvres issues des archives personnelles de l’artiste, dont de nombreuses images inédites, avec une attention particulière aux années 1950-1980. Après l’étape à Lugano, l’exposition sera présentée au Detroit Institute of Arts.

Il MASI Lugano presenta la più ampia ed esaustiva retrospettiva mai dedicata al fotografo ghanese James Barnor (Accra, 1929). Realizzata dalle Serpentine Galleries di Londra, la mostra documenta la lunga carriera nel corso della quale Barnor si è cimentato con ogni genere fotografico: dai ritratti in studio ai reportages giornalistici, dagli editoriali di moda alla fotografia di strada. Attraverso le sue immagini, contraddistinte da uno sguardo schietto e un approccio spontaneo, Barnor racconta i cambiamenti sociali e politici che hanno segnato la storia recente del suo paese così come quella della comunità africana londinese. Con un’attenzione particolare dedicata ai decenni 1950-1980, in mostra sono presentate opere provenienti dall’archivio personale dell’artista, tra cui numerose immagini inedite. Dopo la tappa al MASI Lugano, la mostra sarà presentata al Detroit Institute of Arts.

MASI Lugano presents the largest and most comprehensive retrospective to date devoted to the work of Ghanaian photographer James Barnor (Accra, 1929). Organized by the Serpentine Galleries in London, the exhibition documents Barnor’s long career, which encompasses numerous photographic genres, from studio portraiture to photojournalism, fashion editorials and street photography. Through his images, characterized by a direct and a spontaneous approach, his shots recount the social and political changes that marked the recent history of his country and that of London’s African community. Focusing in particular on the decades 1950–1980, the exhibition presents works from the artist’s personal archives, including many unpublished pictures. After MASI Lugano’s venue, the exhibition will be showcased at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
