In den vergangenen 20 Jahren hat Charles Fréger eine umfangreiche Porträtsammlung aufgebaut. Zunächst interessierte er sich für Kleidungsstücke und Uniformen, später erkundete er Kostümtraditionen auf allen Kontinenten. Durch seine Fotografien begegnen wir archaischen Gestalten, Wesen mit vielfacher und mehrdeutiger Identität, die in unserer Fantasie auf Resonanz stoßen. Vier Reihen vereinen sich in dieser umfangreichen Ausstellung: „Commedia dell'Arte“ ist in Venedig entstanden und konzentriert sich auf die Choreografie der maskierten Charaktere, in „Yokainoshima“ befasst sich der Fotograf mit den rituellen Gestalten Japans, „Wilder Mann“ ist ein Fotografie-Projekt, das über viele Jahre in 20 europäischen Ländern verwirklicht wurde, und „Cimarron“ führt den Fotografen in das Amerika mit afrikanischen Wurzeln, das sich vom Süden der USA bis nach Peru erstreckt. Die von Fréger fotografierten Gestalten, die Tiere oder sonderbare, lustige, ausgefallene und mitunter furchterregende Geschöpfe verkörpern, vermitteln einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt der Kostüme und Kulturen rund um den Globus. Indem der Künstler seine ganze Aufmerksamkeit den Aufmachungen und würdevollen Körperhaltungen widmet, lässt er uns mit diesen maskierten Gestalten allein. Also bleibt es uns selbst überlassen, die Geschichte jeder einzelnen Gestalt zur ersinnen.
Charles Fréger (Frankreich, 1975) lebt und arbeitet in Rouen. Er hat an der École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen studiert. Seit Beginn des Jahrhunderts widmet er sich einer Bestandsaufnahme mit dem Titel „Fotografische Porträts und Uniformen” deren Reihen er in zahlreichen Ländern der Erde zusammenstellt. Die von ihm porträtierten Gestalten sind geschminkt, tragen Masken, Kostüme, Schmuckstücke und Accessoires, um ihre Kultur, die Geschichte ihrer Gemeinschaft und ihr Erbe zu vermitteln. Fréger hat in diversen Museen und auf verschiedenen Festivals ausgestellt und zahlreiche Werke veröffentlicht, darunter Cimarron (2019), Yokainoshima (2016), Bretonnes (2015) und Wilder Mann (2012). Er ist Gründungsmitglied des europäisch-amerikanischen Fotografen-Netzwerks Piece of Cake.
Charles Fréger a constitué depuis une vingtaine d’années un vaste corpus de portraits, d’abord en s’intéressant aux tenues et uniformes, puis en partant à la rencontre de traditions masquées sur tous les continents. Ses photographies nous confrontent avec des figures séculaires, des êtres aux identités multiples et ambiguës sur lesquelles se projette notre imaginaire. Incarnant des animaux ou des créatures étranges, comiques voire effrayantes ou extravagantes, les figures photographiées par Fréger donnent la mesure de la variété des coutumes et des cultures à travers le monde. En portant son attention aux parures et à la solennité de la pose, l’artiste nous laisse seul face à ces figures masquées. À nous, dès lors, d’imaginer le récit lié à ces personnages.
Charles Fréger (France, 1975) vit et travaille à Rouen. Il a étudié à l’école des beaux-arts de Rouen. Depuis le début des années 2000, il poursuit un inventaire intitulé «Portraits photographiques et uniformes» voyageant sur tous les continents pour réaliser ses portraits. Les sujets qu’il photographie portent des masques, maquillages, costumes, parures et accessoires pour raconter leur culture, l’histoire de leur communauté et leur héritage. Fréger a exposé dans divers musées et festivals et a publié de nombreux ouvrages, parmi lesquels Cimarron (2019), Yokainoshima (2016), Bretonnes (2015) et Wilder Mann (2012). Il est membre fondateur du réseau de photographes européens et américains, Piece of Cake.

Over the past twenty years, Charles Fréger has built up a vast collection of portraits, first by focusing on outfits and uniforms, then by exploring masked traditions on every continent. His photographs confront us with secular figures, beings with multiple and ambiguous identities on which our imagination is projected. Four series are brought together in this vast exhibition : “Commedia dell'Arte”, produced in Venice and showing the body play of his masked characters ; “Yokainoshima”, in which the photographer explores the ritual figures of Japan ; “Wilder Mann”, a photographic campaign carried out over many years in 20 European countries ; and “Cimarron”, which takes the photographer to Afro-descendant America, from the southern United States to Peru. Embodying strange, comical, sometimes frightening or extravagant animals or creatures, the figures Fréger photographs give a measure of the variety of customs and cultures around the world. By paying attention to the finery and the solemnity of the pose, the artist leaves us alone in front of these masked figures. It is then up to us to imagine the story of each of the characters.
