Das Belfast Photo Festival und das Ulster Museum freuen sich, die Ausstellung Against The Image: Fotografie. Medien. Manipulation zu präsentieren, mit Arbeiten von Victor Sloan, Tabitha Soren, Alexandra Rose Howland und Now You See Me Moria.
Die Ausstellung untersucht die Autorität der Fotografie in unserem Zeitalter der Massenmedien und der Massen(fehl)information. Die Art und Weise, wie wir Nachrichten und Medienbilder konsumieren, hat sich weiterentwickelt, und der Zugang zur Welt scheint zum Greifen nahe: Ist das, was wir sehen, die Realität?
Künstler stellen dieses Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der Wahrheit der Ereignisse und der Art und Weise, wie sie dargestellt werden, heraus. Als Reaktion auf verschiedene globale Ereignisse und Konflikte hinterfragen und entlarven die hier vertretenen Künstler den höchst subjektiven und vermittelten Charakter der Fotografie. Sie tun dies, indem sie das Medium selbst untergraben - indem sie die Oberfläche von Bildern bearbeiten, verzerren oder anderweitig manipulieren -, um Erzählungen zu enthüllen, die oft ungesehen bleiben oder sich in gewisser Weise der Darstellung entziehen. Auf diese Weise regen sie uns dazu an, zu hinterfragen, was fotografische Praxis im modernen Zeitalter ist, und darüber nachzudenken, wie wir Medien in unserem täglichen Leben aufnehmen.

L'exposition cherche à examiner l'autorité de la photographie à notre époque de médias de masse et de (mauvaise) information de masse. La façon dont nous consommons les nouvelles et les images des médias a évolué, avec un accès au monde apparemment au bout des doigts : ce que nous voyons est-il la réalité ?
Les artistes exposent cette tension, entre la vérité des événements et la façon dont ils sont présentés. Réagissant à divers événements et conflits mondiaux, les artistes présentés ici remettent en question et exposent la nature hautement subjective et médiatisée de la photographie. Ils y parviennent en subvertissant le médium lui-même - en travaillant sur la surface des images, en les déformant ou en les manipulant - afin d'exposer des récits qui passent souvent inaperçus ou qui, d'une certaine manière, résistent à la représentation. Ce faisant, ils nous encouragent à nous interroger sur ce qu'est la pratique photographique à l'ère moderne et à réfléchir à la manière dont nous absorbons les médias dans notre vie quotidienne.
Cette exposition est organisée conjointement par Clare Gormley, responsable des programmes et des partenariats au Belfast Photo Festival, et Anna Liesching, conservatrice d'art à l'Ulster Museum (National Museums NI).

La mostra si propone di esaminare l'autorità della fotografia nella nostra epoca di mass media e di (errata) informazione di massa. Il modo in cui consumiamo le notizie e le immagini dei media si è evoluto, con l'accesso al mondo apparentemente a portata di mano: quello che vediamo è la realtà?
Gli artisti mettono a nudo questa tensione tra la verità degli eventi e il modo in cui vengono presentati. Rispondendo a vari eventi e conflitti globali, gli artisti qui inclusi sfidano ed espongono la natura altamente soggettiva e mediata della fotografia. Lo fanno sovvertendo il mezzo stesso - lavorando sulla superficie, distorcendo o manipolando in altro modo le immagini - per esporre narrazioni che spesso non vengono viste o che in qualche modo resistono alla rappresentazione. In questo modo ci incoraggiano a mettere in discussione la pratica fotografica nell'era moderna e a riflettere sul modo in cui assorbiamo i media nella nostra vita quotidiana.

The exhibition looks to examine the authority of the photograph in our era of mass media and mass (mis)information. How we consume news and media imagery has evolved, with access to the world seemingly at our fingertips: is what we see the reality?
Artists are exposing this tension, between the truth of events and how they are presented. Responding to various global events and conflicts, the artists included here challenge and expose photography’s highly subjective and mediated nature. They do this by subverting the medium itself — working onto the surface of, distorting or otherwise manipulating images — to expose narratives that often go unseen or some ways resist representation. In doing so they encourage us to question what photographic practice is in the modern age and reflect on how we absorb media in our daily lives.
This exhibition is co-curated by Clare Gormley, Head of Programmes and Partnerships at Belfast Photo Festival, and Anna Liesching, Curator of Art at Ulster Museum (National Museums NI).
