Nicolas Pollis Einzelausstellung When Strawberries Will Grow on Trees, I Will Kiss U erzählt auf so humorvolle wie verletzliche Art und Weise von Einsamkeit, Zweifel, Begehren und Intimität in all ihren Facetten. Die Fotografien dienen dem Künstler als visuelles Tagebuch, das zur metaphorischen Untersuchung seines Geisteszustandes im Jahr 2020 wird. Wir folgen Nicolas Polli, eingeschlossen während des Lockdowns, in seinen privaten Wohnraum und blicken in seine Küche, sein Bett, seine Gedanken. Den Worten des Künstlers zufolge: «Drei Monate, in denen ich innehalten und in mein Inneres schauen musste, um eine Kombination aus Unsicherheit und Poesie, Sehnsucht und Lust zu finden, die eine Seite meines Charakters und vielleicht die vieler Männer unserer Generation zeigt, die schwach und unfähig ist, die Bedürfnisse und Ziele zu erfüllen, die wir uns selbst und die heutige Gesellschaft setzen. » Auf den Aufnahmen stapeln sich schmutziges Geschirr, Essensreste und ungewaschene Socken. Textfragmente in Gedichtform erzählen von der Last der Einsamkeit und werden zum fiktiven Gegenüber, dem Dinge anvertraut werden, die sonst unausgesprochen bleiben. Pollis Arbeiten sind Sinnbild einer Welt die <still steht> und die von einem Menschen bewohnt wird, der nicht mehr funktioniert, sich verweigert. Hierin unterscheiden sie sich fundamental von der auf Social Media propagierten <Realität>, in der Perfektion, Produktivität und Selbstoptimierung mit <likes> belohnt werden. Seit ihrer Erfindung ist die Fotografie ein mächtiges Werkzeug bei der Konstruktion und Dokumentation von Rollen- und Körperbildern, gerade in Hinblick auf Stereotype. Pollis Fotografien artikulieren eine alternative Perspektiven auf Emotionalität und Begehren in unserer digitalen Gegenwart und lassen die Grenzen zwischen Skulptur, Körper und fotografischem Bild verschwimmen. Dabei unterwandern sie traditionelle Vorstellungen von Männlichkeit und zeigen ein ehrliches Porträt von Verletzlichkeit, aufgenommen und gesehen durch die Augen derer, die sie erleben. Gleichzeitig artikulieren sie ein neues Genre von Stillleben, das Fotografie als Teil einer speziell für die Ausstellung entwickelten Szenografie präsentiert, welche direkt mit den Körpern und Sinnen der Besucher:innen interagiert.
Nicolas Polli wurde 1989 in Brusino Arsizio, Schweiz, geboren und hat an der ECAL Lausanne Art Direction studiert, wo er seinen Master erhielt. Seine fotografischen Arbeiten wurden vielfach national und international ausgestellt, unter anderem im l’appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Espace Arlaud in Lausanne, Museum Brot in Ulm, Verzasca Foto Festival, Gibellina Photoroad, Coal Mine Winterthur.

L’exposition individuelle When Strawberries Will Grow on Trees, I Will Kiss U de Nicolas Polli évoque avec autant d’humour que de vulnérabilité la solitude, le doute, le désir et l’intimité sous toutes leurs facettes. Les photographies servent de journal intime visuel à l’artiste et deviennent une étude métaphorique de son état d’esprit en 2020. Nous suivons Nicolas Polli, enfermé pendant le confinement, dans son espace de vie privé et observons sa cuisine, son lit, ses pensées. Selon les mots de l’artiste : « Trois mois pendant lesquels j’ai dû m’arrêter et regarder à l’intérieur de moi pour trouver une combinaison d’incertitude et de poésie, de désir et de plaisir, qui montre un côté de mon caractère et peut-être celui de beaucoup d’hommes de notre génération, faibles et incapables de répondre aux besoins et aux objectifs que nous nous fixons et que la société actuelle nous fixe ». Sur les prises de vue s’empilent de la vaisselle sale, des restes de nourriture et des chaussettes non lavées. Des fragments de textes sous forme de poèmes racontent le poids de la solitude et deviennent un vis-à-vis fictif auquel sont confiées des choses qui resteraient autrement inexprimées.
Les œuvres de Polli sont le symbole d’un monde qui <s’arrête> et qui est habité par une personne qui ne fonctionne plus, qui refuse. En cela, elles se distinguent fondamentalement de la <réalité> propagée sur les médias sociaux, dans laquelle la perfection, la productivité et l’optimisation de soi sont récompensées par des <likes>. Depuis son invention, la photographie est un outil puissant dans la construction et la documentation des rôles et des images corporelles, notamment en ce qui concerne les stéréotypes. Les photographies de Polli articulent une perspective alternative sur l’émotion et le désir dans notre présent numérique et brouillent les frontières entre la sculpture, le corps et l’image photographique. Ce faisant, elles subvertissent les idées traditionnelles sur la masculinité et dressent un portrait honnête de la vulnérabilité, prise et vue à travers les yeux de ceux qui la vivent. En même temps, ils articulent un nouveau genre de nature morte qui présente la photographie comme faisant partie d’une scénographie spécialement conçue pour l’exposition et qui interagit directement avec le corps et les sens des visiteurs.
Nicolas Polli est né à Brusino Arsizio en Suisse en 1989, il a étudié la direction artistique à l’ECAL Lausanne pour son Master. Son travail photographique a été exposé au niveau national et international, notamment à l’appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Espace Arlaud à Lausanne, Musée Brot à Ulm, Verzasca Foto Festival, Gibellina Photoroad et Coal Mine Winterthur.

La mostra personale di Nicolas Polli When Strawberries Will Grow on Trees, I Will Kiss U racconta la solitudine, il dubbio, il desiderio e l'intimità in tutte le sue sfaccettature, in un modo tanto umoristico quanto vulnerabile. Le fotografie fungono da diario visivo dell'artista, che diventa un esame metaforico del suo stato d'animo nel 2020. Seguiamo Nicolas Polli, chiuso in casa durante la serrata, nel suo spazio vitale privato, scrutando la sua cucina, il suo letto, i suoi pensieri. Nelle parole dell'artista: "Tre mesi in cui ho dovuto fermarmi e guardare dentro di me per trovare una combinazione di insicurezza e poesia, di desiderio e di voglia di fare che mostra un lato del mio carattere e forse di quello di molti uomini della nostra generazione, deboli e incapaci di soddisfare i bisogni e gli obiettivi che ci poniamo per noi stessi e per la società di oggi". "Piatti sporchi, avanzi di cibo e calzini non lavati si accumulano sulle fotografie. Frammenti di testo in forma di poesia raccontano il peso della solitudine e diventano una controparte immaginaria a cui vengono confidate cose che altrimenti rimarrebbero non dette. Le opere di Polli sono emblematiche di un mondo che <sta fermo> ed è abitato da una persona che non funziona più, che si rifiuta di farlo. In questo differiscono fondamentalmente dalla <realtà> propagandata sui social media, dove la perfezione, la produttività e l'auto-ottimizzazione sono premiate con i <likes>. Fin dalla sua invenzione, la fotografia è stata un potente strumento di costruzione e documentazione delle immagini del ruolo e del corpo, soprattutto in termini di stereotipi. Le fotografie di Polli articolano una prospettiva alternativa sull'emotività e sul desiderio nel nostro presente digitale, confondendo i confini tra scultura, corpo e immagine fotografica. In questo modo, sovvertono le nozioni tradizionali di mascolinità e presentano un ritratto onesto della vulnerabilità, catturata e vista attraverso gli occhi di chi la sperimenta. Allo stesso tempo, articolano un nuovo genere di still life che presenta la fotografia come parte di una scenografia sviluppata appositamente per la mostra, interagendo direttamente con i corpi e i sensi del visitatore.
Nicolas Polli è nato nel 1989 a Brusino Arsizio, in Svizzera, e ha studiato direzione artistica all'ECAL di Losanna, dove ha conseguito un master. Il suo lavoro fotografico è stato ampiamente esposto a livello nazionale e internazionale, tra cui l'appartement - Espace Images Vevey, l'Espace Arlaud di Losanna, il Museum Brot di Ulm, il Verzasca Foto Festival, il Photoroad di Gibellina, il Coal Mine di Winterthur.

Nicolas Polli’s solo exhibition explores the topics of loneliness, doubts, desire and intimacy from a humorous and at the same time vulnerable perspective. His photographs serve as a visual diary, revealing a new genre of still life that becomes a metaphorical examination of his state of mind in 2020. We follow Nicolas Polli confined during the lockdown in his private living space, peering into his kitchen, his bed and his thoughts. According to the artist we witness: “Three months in which I had to stop and look inside myself to find a combination of insecurity and poetry, longing and lust; showing a side of my character, and perhaps that of many men of our generation, which is weak and unable to fulfill the needs and goals set by ourselves and by contemporary society.” The photographs document dirty dishes, leftover food and unwashed socks. Moreover, text fragments in poem form tell of the burden of loneliness and become a fictional counterpart to which things are confided that otherwise remain unspoken. Polli’s works are emblematic of a world that ‘stands still’ and is inhabited by a person who no longer functions, who refuses to ‘succeed’. In this they differ fundamentally from the ‘reality’ propagated on social media, in which perfection, productivity and self-optimization are rewarded with “likes”. Since its invention, photography has been a powerful tool in constructing and documenting images of the body, particularly with regard to stereotypes and role models. Polli’s photographs offer an alternative perspective on emotionality and desire in our digital present, blurring the boundaries between sculpture, body, and the photographic image. In doing so, they subvert traditional notions of masculinity and present an honest portrait of vulnerability, captured and seen through the eyes of those who experience it. At the same time, they articulate a new genre of still life that presents photography as part of a scenography developed specifically for the exhibition that interacts directly with the bodies and senses of the visitor.
