UNCONVENTIONAL": eine Auswahl von Farbfotografien, die einen noch nie dagewesenen Blick auf die weniger bekannte Produktion des Künstlers geben, der 2018 mit dem Lucie Award als bester internationaler Modefotograf (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion) ausgezeichnet wurde.
Die Ausstellung bietet dem Publikum innovative Bilder in Bezug auf Kulissen und Styling, die das Ergebnis des unverkennbaren Einfallsreichtums des Künstlers sind: eine Fotografie, die ironisch und gleichzeitig kultiviert, raffiniert und provokativ zugleich ist, reich an Verweisen auf die Kunstgeschichte, eklektischen Außenkulissen an exotischen Orten und kinematografischen Zitaten, die an die jugendliche Erfahrung in den Cinecittà-Studios in Rom erinnern.
In der Ausstellung wechseln sich intime und spontane Aufnahmen von Models und Prominenten wie Eva Herzigova, Isa Stoppi und Donatella Versace mit ikonischen Fotografien ab, die Barbieri - einer der brillantesten Interpreten des Made in Italy - für einige der legendärsten Werbekampagnen für italienische und internationale Modemarken wie Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino und Armani konzipiert hat.
International bekannt für seine Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen, deren Protagonistinnen in ihrer raffinierten Strenge fast unerreichbar erscheinen, erzählt Barbieri in Farbe seine persönliche und ironische Interpretation von Mode und weiblicher Schönheit: Die Frauen auf den gezeigten Bildern sind für diesen Anlass von den kanonischen Posen der Modefotografie befreit und werden zu Sprecherinnen einer neuen, unkonventionellen Eleganz, die ihre lässige und sinnliche Seite offenbart.
Die ausgestellten Werke, darunter noch nie gezeigte Porträts und handgemalte Bilder, zeugen von der Kreativität und der Respektlosigkeit eines Künstlers, für den die Kunst schon immer ein unverzichtbares Mittel zur Aufwertung und Unterstützung der Mode war, das weit über ihren Gebrauchswert hinausging. Die durchgeführten Studien und Forschungen sind so weitreichend, dass es in einer über 60 Jahre andauernden Karriere mit mehr als einer Million Aufnahmen schwierig wäre, auch nur eine einzige Intervention ohne Anspielungen, Bezugspunkte oder Inspirationen auf die bildende Kunst, das Kino und die großen Meister der Kunst und Fotografie zu finden.
"Ich habe Kunst in all ihren Formen immer geliebt. Schon als Kind war die Inspiration durch Theater und Kino ein wichtiger Antrieb. Dann habe ich viel gelesen, klassische Kunst studiert, mir die Meister der Vergangenheit angesehen oder mich einfach umgesehen und mich von dem, was um mich herum geschah, inspirieren lassen und so mein künstlerisches Auge entwickelt. Ich stellte mir vor und zeichnete in meinem Kopf, wie ich das Ergebnis der Dreharbeiten haben wollte, ich baute meine Kulissen tadellos, immer mit einem mehr oder weniger expliziten Verweis auf Kunst, Kino oder Architektur". Die ausgestellten Werke werden ein Publikum, das Barbieri bereits kennt und liebt, überraschen, indem sie einen wenig bekannten, aber unwiderstehlich faszinierenden Aspekt eines der größten Meister der Fotografie zeigen, dessen Autorenstil bis heute zu den am meisten nachgeahmten und bewunderten der Welt gehört. Die Ausstellung wird nur wenige Tage nach der Veröffentlichung des ersten Dokumentarfilms über das Leben und die Arbeit von Gian Paolo Barbieri, "L'uomo e la bellezza" (Der Mann und die Schönheit), der bereits den Publikumspreis des Biografilm-Festivals 2022 in Bologna gewonnen hat, in den italienischen Kinos gezeigt.
'UNCONVENTIONAL' : une sélection de photographies en couleur qui donnent un aperçu inédit de la production moins connue de l'Artiste, lauréat en 2018 du Lucie Award du meilleur photographe de mode international (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion).
L'exposition propose au public des images innovantes en termes de décors et de style, fruit de l'ingéniosité inégalée de l'Artiste : une photographie ironique et en même temps cultivée, raffinée et provocante à la fois, riche en références à l'histoire de l'art, en décors éclectiques en extérieur dans des lieux exotiques et en citations cinématographiques faisant écho à l'expérience de jeunesse dans les studios de Cinecittà à Rome.
Dans l'exposition, des clichés intimes et spontanés de mannequins et de célébrités telles qu'Eva Herzigova, Isa Stoppi et Donatella Versace alternent avec des photographies iconiques que Barbieri - l'un des plus brillants interprètes du Made in Italy - a conçues pour certaines des campagnes publicitaires les plus légendaires de marques de mode italiennes et internationales telles que Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino et Armani.
Connu internationalement pour ses clichés en noir et blanc, dont les protagonistes semblent presque inaccessibles dans leur sévérité raffinée, Barbieri raconte, à travers la couleur, son interprétation personnelle et ironique de la mode et de la beauté féminine : les femmes des images exposées se libèrent pour l'occasion des poses plus canoniques de la photographie de mode, pour devenir les porte-parole d'une nouvelle élégance non conventionnelle qui révèle leur côté plus désinvolte et sensuel.
Les œuvres exposées, dont des portraits inédits et des images peintes à la main, témoignent de la créativité et de l'irrévérence d'un artiste pour qui les arts ont toujours représenté un moyen indispensable de valoriser et de soutenir la mode, bien au-delà de sa valeur d'usage. Les études et les recherches menées ont été d'une telle portée que, dans une carrière de plus de 60 ans et plus d'un million de clichés, il serait difficile de trouver une seule intervention sans allusions, points de référence ou inspiration aux arts visuels, au cinéma et aux grands maîtres de l'art et de la photographie.
"J'ai toujours aimé l'art, sous toutes ses formes. Depuis que je suis enfant, l'inspiration du théâtre et du cinéma a été un moteur important. Puis en lisant beaucoup, en étudiant l'art classique, en regardant les maîtres du passé ou simplement en regardant autour de moi et en m'inspirant de ce qui se passait autour de moi, j'ai développé mon œil artistique. J'imaginais et dessinais dans ma tête ce que je voulais que le résultat du tournage soit, je construisais mes décors de manière impeccable, avec toujours une citation, plus ou moins explicite, à l'art, au cinéma ou à l'architecture." Les œuvres exposées surprendront un public qui connaît et aime déjà Barbieri en montrant un aspect peu connu mais irrésistiblement fascinant d'un des plus grands maîtres de la photographie dont le style d'auteur reste, à ce jour, parmi les plus imités et admirés au monde. L'exposition sera inaugurée quelques jours après la sortie en salle en Italie du premier docufilm réalisé sur l'œuvre et la vie de Gian Paolo Barbieri "L'uomo e la bellezza" (L'homme et la beauté), déjà lauréat du prix du public au festival Biografilm 2022 de Bologne.
UNCONVENTIONAL’: una selezione di fotografie a colori che regalano uno sguardo inedito alla produzione meno nota dell’Artista, vincitore nel 2018 del premio Lucie Award come Miglior Fotografo di Moda Internazionale (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion).
Il percorso espositivo propone al pubblico immagini innovative in termini di ambientazioni e styling, frutto dell’inconfondibile ingegno dell’Artista: una fotografia ironica e allo stesso tempo colta, ricercata e provocatoria insieme, ricca di rimandi alla storia dell’arte, di eclettici set outdoor in location esotiche e citazioni cinematografiche eco dell’esperienza giovanile agli studi di Cinecittà a Roma.
In mostra scatti intimi e spontanei di modelle e celebrity come Eva Herzigova, Isa Stoppi e Donatella Versace si alternano ad iconiche fotografie che Barbieri – tra i più brillanti interpreti del Made in Italy – ha concepito per alcune delle più leggendarie campagne pubblicitarie per brand di moda italiani e internazionali come Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino e Armani.
Internazionalmente conosciuto per i suoi scatti in bianco e nero, le cui protagoniste appaiono quasi inarrivabili nella loro raffinata severità, Barbieri racconta, tramite il colore, la sua personale e ironica interpretazione della moda e della bellezza femminile: le donne delle immagini in mostra si liberano per l’occasione delle pose più canoniche della fotografia di moda, per farsi portavoce di una nuova eleganza non convenzionale che ne rivela il lato più disinvolto e sensuale.
Le opere esposte, tra ritratti inediti e immagini dipinte a mano, raccontano la creatività e l’irriverenza di un Artista per cui le arti hanno sempre rappresentato un mezzo imprescindibile di valorizzazione e di supporto alla moda, elevata ben oltre il proprio valore d’uso. Gli studi e le ricerche condotti sono stati di così vasta portata che, in una carriera lunga più di 60 anni con più di un milione di scatti, sarebbe difficile trovare anche un solo intervento senza allusioni, punti di riferimento o ispirazione alle arti visive, al cinema e ai grandi maestri dell’arte e della fotografia.
«Da sempre amo l’arte, in tutte le sue declinazioni. Fin da piccolo l’ispirazione al teatro e al cinema furono una spinta importante. Poi leggendo tanto, studiando l’arte classica, guardando ai maestri del passato o semplicemente guardandomi intorno e prendendo spunto da ciò che si animava intorno a me, sviluppavo il mio occhio artistico. Immaginavo e disegnavo nella mia mente ciò che avrei voluto fosse il risultato del servizio, costruivo i miei set in maniera impeccabile, sempre con una citazione, più o meno esplicita, all’arte, al cinema o all’architettura.» (Gian Paolo Barbieri)
Le opere in esposizione sorprenderanno un pubblico che già conosce e ama Barbieri mostrando un aspetto poco noto ma di irresistibile fascino di uno dei più grandi maestri della fotografia il cui stile autorale resta, tutt’oggi, tra i più emulati e ammirati al mondo. La mostra inaugurerà a pochi giorni di distanza dall’uscita nelle sale cinematografiche in Italia del primo docufilm realizzato sull’opera e la vita di Gian Paolo Barbieri “L’uomo e la bellezza” già vincitore del premio del pubblico al Biografilm Festival 2022 di Bologna.
UNCONVENTIONAL’, a selection of unseen colour photographs by the Artist who was the winner of the 2018 Lucie Award for Best International Photographer (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion).
The exhibition presents a highly innovative selection of images to the public, both in terms of their setting and styling, the fruit of the unmistakable genius of the Artist. It is a style of photography that is at once ironic and sophisticated, both rare and provocative, rich with references to art history, eclectic outdoor sets in exotic locations and allusions to cinema that eco Barbieri’s experiences as a young man studying at Cinecittà in Rome.
The exhibition showcases intimate, spontaneous shots of models and celebrities such as Eva Herzigova, Isa Stoppi and Donatella Versace counterbalanced with iconic photographs which Barbieri – one of the most brilliant interpreters of Made in Italy – created for some of the most famous ad campaigns for Italian and international fashion brands such as Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Armani.
Internationally recognised for his trademark black and white shots, his subjects appear almost unattainable in their sharp sophistication. Using colour, Barbieri recounts his own personal and ironic interpretation of fashion and feminine beauty: the women in the photographs on display free themselves from the more canonical poses of fashion photography instead becoming for the occasion spokeswomen of a new kind of unconventional elegance which reveals a more nonchalant, sensual side.
The works shown, a mix of unseen portraits and hand painted photographs, tell the story of the Artist’s irreverence and creativity, a photographer for whom the arts have always represented an inescapable means of validation and support to fashion, well beyond their use value. His studies and research have been so far reaching that, in a career lasting over 60 years and comprising more than a million shots, it would be difficult to find even a single example without allusions to, points of reference or inspiration from the visual arts, the cinema and the great masters of art and photography.
«I have always loved art, in all its incarnations. Since I was a child the inspiration of theatre and cinema played an important role. Reading widely, studying classical art, looking to the great masters of the past or simply looking around me at what animated my surroundings, I cultivated my artistic eye. I imagined or drew in my head that which I would have liked to be the result of this act, constructing my sets meticulously, always citing, more or less explicitly, art, cinema or architecture.» (Gian Paolo Barbieri)
The works in the exhibition will surprise a public who already knows and loves Barbieri, showing a lesser known but irresistibly fascinating dimension of one of the greatest masters of photography, whose trademark style remains, even today, among the most copied and admired in the world. The exhibition will open just a few days from the release in cinemas of the first docufilm made about the life and work of Gian Paolo Barbieri, ‘The Man and The Beauty’, already winner of the audience award at Biografilm Festival 2022 in Bologna.
