Der japanische Künstler Katsutoshi Yuasa (*1978) zeigt farbige und schwarz-weisse Holzschnitte vom Kleinformat bis zur Wandinstallation im Kabinett des Museum Franz Gertsch. Er arbeitet mit Fotografie und Holzschnitt und bindet neben zeitlosen Naturmotiven auch zeitgenössische Elemente in die Arbeiten mit ein.
Der japanische Künstler Katsutoshi Yuasa verbindet in seiner Druckgrafik die Jahrhunderte alte Tradition des japanischen Holzschnitts mit der heutigen, digitalisierten Welt. Flüchtige Momentaufnahmen, selbst fotografiert oder den Medien entnommen, bilden die Grundlage seiner Holzschnitte, die in einem zeit- und arbeitsintensiven Schaffensprozess neben Naturmotiven auch zeitgenössische Elemente einbinden und zu zeitloser Gültigkeit erheben.
In seiner Druckgrafik visualisiert der Künstler den Prozess der Erinnerung und betrachtet sie als ein Bildmedium, das mit der Vergangenheit, der Gegenwart und der Zukunft verbunden ist. Für ihn ist sie nach wie vor ein Werkzeug der Vermittlung: „Seit dem grossen Erdbeben in Ostjapan haben wir verstanden, dass wir in einer instabilen Welt leben. Während wir uns auf die nächste Katastrophe vorbereiten, leben wir in Harmonie mit der Natur und müssen ernsthaft darüber nachdenken, was wir in die Zukunft tragen möchten.“
In der Ausstellung im Kabinett des Museum Franz Gertsch zeigt der Künstler farbige und schwarz-weisse Holzschnitte vom Kleinformat bis zur Wandinstallation.
Katsutoshi Yuasa wurde 1978 in Tokio (J) geboren. 2002 schloss er sein Studium an der Musashino Art University in Tokio ab und erhielt 2005 den MA Fine Art Printmaking vom Royal College of Art in London. Seitdem hat Yuasa an renommierten Künstlerresidenzen wie der Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), Cité des Arts (Paris) und dem Kala Art Institute (Berkeley) teilgenommen. Seine Arbeiten werden weltweit in Galerien und Museen ausgestellt und sind in zahlreichen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten. Im Jahr 2011 wurde er sowohl mit dem Hauptpreis der Northern Print Biennale als auch mit dem Towry Print Prize in Großbritannien ausgezeichnet. Yuasa lebt und arbeitet in Tokio und ist Dozent an der Tama Art University.
Die Ausstellung wurde kuratiert von Anna Wesle in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler und Micheko Galerie, München.

L'artiste japonais Katsutoshi Yuasa (*1978) présente des gravures sur bois en couleur et en noir et blanc, du petit format à l'installation murale, dans le cabinet du musée Franz Gertsch. Il travaille avec la photographie et la gravure sur bois et intègre dans ses œuvres, outre des motifs naturels intemporels, des éléments contemporains.
Dans ses estampes, l'artiste japonais Katsutoshi Yuasa associe la tradition séculaire de la gravure sur bois japonaise au monde numérisé d'aujourd'hui. Des instantanés fugaces, photographiés par lui-même ou tirés des médias, constituent la base de ses gravures sur bois qui, au cours d'un processus de création exigeant beaucoup de temps et de travail, intègrent non seulement des motifs naturels mais aussi des éléments contemporains et les élèvent à une validité intemporelle.
Dans ses gravures, l'artiste visualise le processus de la mémoire et la considère comme un médium visuel lié au passé, au présent et au futur. Pour lui, elle reste un outil de transmission : "Depuis le grand tremblement de terre dans l'est du Japon, nous avons compris que nous vivions dans un monde instable. Alors que nous nous préparons à la prochaine catastrophe, nous vivons en harmonie avec la nature et devons réfléchir sérieusement à ce que nous voulons porter dans le futur".
Dans l'exposition du cabinet du musée Franz Gertsch, l'artiste présente des gravures sur bois en couleur et en noir et blanc allant du petit format à l'installation murale.
Katsutoshi Yuasa est né en 1978 à Tokyo (J). En 2002, il a terminé ses études à la Musashino Art University de Tokyo et a obtenu en 2005 le MA Fine Art Printmaking du Royal College of Art de Londres. Depuis, Yuasa a participé à des résidences d'artistes renommées telles que la Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), la Cité des Arts (Paris) et le Kala Art Institute (Berkeley). Ses œuvres sont exposées dans des galeries et des musées du monde entier et sont représentées dans de nombreuses collections publiques. En 2011, il a remporté à la fois le grand prix de la Northern Print Biennale et le Towry Print Prize en Grande-Bretagne. Yuasa vit et travaille à Tokyo et enseigne à la Tama Art University.
L'exposition a été organisée par Anna Wesle en collaboration avec l'artiste et la galerie Micheko, Munich.

Lavora con la fotografia e le stampe su legno e incorpora elementi contemporanei nelle opere accanto a motivi di natura senza tempo.
Nelle sue stampe, l'artista giapponese Katsutoshi Yuasa combina la tradizione secolare della stampa giapponese su legno con il mondo digitalizzato di oggi. Istantanee fugaci, fotografate da lui stesso o prese dai media, formano la base delle sue stampe su legno che, in un processo creativo che richiede tempo e lavoro, incorporano non solo motivi naturali ma anche elementi contemporanei e li elevano a validità senza tempo.
Nelle sue stampe, l'artista visualizza il processo della memoria e la considera come un mezzo d'immagine collegato al passato, al presente e al futuro. Per lui, rimane uno strumento di mediazione: "Dopo il grande terremoto nel Giappone orientale, abbiamo capito che viviamo in un mondo instabile. Mentre ci prepariamo al prossimo disastro, viviamo in armonia con la natura e dobbiamo pensare seriamente a ciò che vogliamo portare nel futuro".
Nella mostra nel gabinetto del Museo Franz Gertsch, l'artista espone xilografie a colori e in bianco e nero che vanno dai piccoli formati alle installazioni a muro.

The Japanese artist Katsutoshi Yuasa (born 1978) shows coloured and black-and-white woodcuts from small format to wall installation in the Cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch. He works with photography and woodblock prints and incorporates contemporary elements into the works alongside timeless nature motifs.
The Japanese artist Katsutoshi Yuasa combines in his printed oeuvre the centuries-old tradition of Japanese woodcuts with today's digitalised world. Fleeting snapshots, photographed by the artist himself or taken from the media, form the basis of his woodcuts. In a time-consuming and labour-intensive creative process, he incorporates not only natural motifs but also contemporary elements, elevating them to timeless validity.
The artist visualises the process of memory in his prints, which he regards as an image medium that is connected to the past, the present and the future. For him, it remains a tool of conveyance: ‘Since the great earthquake in East Japan, we have understood that we live in an unstable world. While preparing for the next disaster, we live in harmony with nature and need to think seriously about what we want to carry into the future.’
In his exhibition in the Museum Franz Gertsch's Cabinet, the artist shows coloured and black-and-white woodcuts ranging in size from small to wall installation.
Katsutoshi Yuasa was born in Tokyo (J) in 1978. He graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo in 2002 and received an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in London in 2005. Since then, Yuasa has participated in prestigious artist residencies such as the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), Cité des Arts (Paris) and the Kala Art Institute (Berkeley). His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and is included in numerous public collections. In 2011, he was awarded the main prize of the Northern Print Biennale as well as the Towry Print Prize in the UK. Yuasa lives and works in Tokyo and is a lecturer at Tama Art University in Tokyo.
