Der amerikanische Fotograf Jamel Shabazz ist in Brooklyn, New York geboren und aufgewachsen. Bereits im Alter von 15 Jahren nahm er seine erste Kamera zur Hand; dies war nicht nur der Auftakt seiner fotografischen Reise, sondern auch das erste Kapitel seines berühmten "Visual Diary". Seit den frühen 1980er-Jahren hat Shabazz die Energie des New Yorker Strassenlebens eingefangen und gleichzeitig ikonische Bilder der Community, deren Stil und Lebensart geschaffen.
Shabazz war einer der ersten Fotografen, der die aufkommende Jugendkultur und seine eigenen Erlebnisse in den Vierteln East Flatbush, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Downtown Brooklyn bis hin zum Times Square dokumentierte. Die Strassen von New York und das U-Bahn-System der Stadt längst aus unserem Gedächtnis verschwunden ist, und die gleichzeitig ein breites Spektrum sozialer Verhältnisse zeigen.
Shabazz einzigartige Portraitfotografie wurde bereits vielerorts ausgestellt – von der Rockefeller Plaza in New York und dem J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles bis hin zum Victoria and Albert Museum in London und dem Addis Foto Fest in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien. Seine Arbeiten sind Teil der Sammlungen des Whitney Museum, des Art Institute of Chicago, des Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture und dem Fashion Institute of Technology. Seine Bücher "Back in the Days" und "A Time Before Crack" gelten als Klassiker; nicht nur wegen ihrer starken Ausdruckskraft und Authentizität, sondern auch, weil sie weiterhin junge Generationen von Fotografen inspirieren.

Dès l'âge de 15 ans, il a pris en main son premier appareil photo ; ce fut non seulement le début de son voyage photographique, mais aussi le premier chapitre de son célèbre "Visual Diary". Depuis le début des années 1980, Shabazz a capturé l'énergie de la vie de rue new-yorkaise tout en créant des images iconiques de la communauté, de son style et de son mode de vie.

American photographer Jamel Shabazz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He picked up his first camera at the age of 15; this was not only the start of his photographic journey, but also the first chapter of his famous "Visual Diary." Since the early 1980s, Shabazz has captured the energy of New York street life while creating iconic images of the community, its style and way of life.
Shabazz was one of the first photographers to document the emerging youth culture and his own experiences in neighborhoods ranging from East Flatbush, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Downtown Brooklyn to Times Square. The streets of New York and the city's subway system long gone from our memories, while showing a wide range of social conditions.
Shabazz's unique portrait photography has been exhibited in many places - from Rockefeller Plaza in New York and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Addis Foto Fest in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
