Wie kaum ein anderer hat Thomas Höpker den Bildjournalismus in Deutschland geprägt. Seine Fotoreportagen führten ihn durch die ganze Welt. Als Reporter arbeitete er für die Münchner Illustrierte, später für die Zeitschriften Kristall und Stern. Seine Aufgabe sah Höpker schon zu Beginn seiner Karriere darin, „im engen Kontakt mit der Zeit zu leben, das Gegenwärtige zu ergründen und zu enträtseln“. 1979 zog er nach New York und wurde 1989 als erster deutscher Fotograf Vollmitglied der Agentur MAGNUM-Photos.
Aus der Fülle seines Lebenswerks zeigt Thomas Höpker – Intimate History international bekannte sowie nie gezeigte Aufnahmen. Die Zusammenschau vermittelt Höpkers Interesse an gesellschaftlichen Themen und seine Empathie für die von ihm porträtierten Menschen. Authentizität und die fotografische Zeug*innenschaft sind die prägenden Konstanten seiner Arbeit. Unaufgeregt, subtil und fern von Sensationslust wurden viele seiner Motive durch ihre präzise Bildgestaltung und die dichten Bildaussagen zu Ikonen der sozialdokumentarischen Fotografie, auch als Concerned Photography bekannt.

Thomas Höpker a marqué le photojournalisme en Allemagne comme personne d'autre. Ses reportages photographiques l'ont mené dans le monde entier. En tant que reporter, il a travaillé pour le Münchner Illustrierte, puis pour les magazines Kristall et Stern. Dès le début de sa carrière, Höpker considérait que sa mission consistait à "vivre en contact étroit avec le temps, à sonder et à décrypter le présent". En 1979, il s'installe à New York et devient en 1989 le premier photographe allemand membre à part entière de l'agence MAGNUM-Photos.
Thomas Höpker - Intimate History présente des clichés connus à l'échelle internationale ainsi que des photos inédites tirées de l'ensemble de son œuvre. Cette compilation transmet l'intérêt de Höpker pour les sujets de société et son empathie pour les personnes dont il fait le portrait. L'authenticité et le témoignage photographique* sont les constantes marquantes de son travail. Sans complaisance, subtilement et loin du sensationnalisme, nombre de ses sujets sont devenus des icônes de la photographie documentaire sociale, également connue sous le nom de Concerned Photography, grâce à leur cadrage précis et à la densité de leur message visuel.

Dalla ricchezza del lavoro di una vita, Thomas Höpker - Storia intima presenta fotografie note a livello internazionale e inedite. La sinossi trasmette l'interesse di Höpker per le questioni sociali e la sua empatia per le persone ritratte. L'autenticità e la testimonianza fotografica sono le costanti del suo lavoro. Poco agitati, sottili e lontani dal sensazionalismo, molti dei suoi motivi sono diventati icone della fotografia documentaria sociale, nota anche come Concerned Photography, grazie alla loro precisa composizione dell'immagine e alle dense dichiarazioni pittoriche.

Thomas Höpker has shaped photojournalism in Germany like no other. His photo reportages took him all over the world. As a reporter, he worked for Münchner Illustrierte, and later for Kristall and Stern magazines. Right from the beginning of his career, Höpker saw his task as "living in close contact with time, fathoming and unraveling the present." In 1979 he moved to New York and in 1989 became the first German photographer to become a full member of the MAGNUM-Photos agency.
From the abundance of his life's work, Thomas Höpker - Intimate History shows internationally known as well as never shown photographs. The synopsis conveys Höpker's interest in social issues and his empathy for the people he portrays. Authenticity and photographic testimony are the defining constants of his work. Unagitated, subtle and far from sensationalism, many of his subjects became icons of social documentary photography, also known as Concerned Photography, due to their precise image composition and dense pictorial statements.
