"Contact Sheets" von Magnum Photos

Ob eine Fotografie zur Ikone wird, hängt vom historischen Moment, der Geistesgegenwart des Fotografierenden und einer ganzen Reihe von glücklichen Begebenheiten ab. Den Fotograf:innen der weltberühmten Agentur «Magnum Photos» gelang die Aufnahme solch einzigartiger Bilder immer wieder. Magnum Fotograf:innen begaben sich weltweit in den Brennpunkt des Geschehens und dokumentierten historische Ereignisse. Ihre Fotografien entstanden unter schwierigsten Bedingungen, wurden in improvisierten Fotolaboren entwickelt oder ohne vorherige Sichtung direkt an die Redaktionen geschickt.
Anhand dieser Bilder zeichnet die Ausstellung Magnum Contact Sheets die Entwicklung und den Niedergang einer Arbeitsweise nach, die so allgegenwärtig war, dass sie als unvermeidlicher und untrennbarer Teil des fotografischen Prozesses erschien: die Verwendung des Kontaktbogens als Aufzeichnung der eigenen Aufnahmen, als Werkzeug für die Bearbeitung und als Index für ein Archiv von Negativen. Der Kontaktabzug, ein direkter Abzug einer Filmrolle oder einer Negativsequenz, ist der erste Blick des Fotografierenden auf das, was er oder sie auf Film festgehalten hat. Er bietet einen einzigartigen, intimen Einblick in den Arbeitsprozess, der es Fotograf:innen erlaubt, erste Beurteilungen der fotografischen Qualität und der Bildinhalte vorzunehmen. Der Kontaktbogen zeichnet jeden Schritt auf dem Weg zu einem Bild auf, sodass man das Gefühl hat, den Fotografierenden hinter die Kulissen zu begleiten und mit seinen Augen zu sehen. Der Kontaktabzug gewährt Einblicke in das Auswahlverfahren von Fotografierenden und Redakteur*innen und hält fest, wie ein Bild entstanden ist.

Les photographes de l'agence mondialement connue "Magnum Photos" ont toujours réussi à prendre de telles images uniques. Les photographes de Magnum se sont rendus au cœur de l'action dans le monde entier et ont documenté des événements historiques. Leurs photos ont été prises dans les conditions les plus difficiles, développées dans des laboratoires photographiques improvisés ou envoyées directement aux rédactions sans avoir été visionnées au préalable.
À travers ces images, l'exposition Magnum Contact Sheets retrace l'évolution et le déclin d'une méthode de travail si omniprésente qu'elle apparaissait comme une partie inévitable et indissociable du processus photographique : l'utilisation de la planche-contact comme enregistrement de ses propres prises de vue, comme outil pour le traitement et comme index pour une archive de négatifs. La planche contact, un tirage direct d'une bobine de film ou d'une séquence de négatifs, est le premier regard du photographe sur ce qu'il ou elle a fixé sur la pellicule. Elle offre un aperçu unique et intime du processus de travail, qui permet aux photographes de faire une première évaluation de la qualité photographique et du contenu de l'image. La planche-contact enregistre chaque étape de la réalisation d'une image, de sorte que l'on a l'impression d'accompagner le photographe dans les coulisses et de voir avec ses yeux. La planche-contact donne un aperçu de la procédure de sélection des photographes et des rédacteurs* et enregistre la manière dont une image a été créée.

Whether a photograph becomes an icon depends on the historical moment, the presence of mind of the photographer and a whole series of fortunate events. The photographers of the world-famous Magnum Photos agency have succeeded time and again in capturing such unique images. Magnum photographers went to the focal point of events all over the world and documented historical events. Their photographs were taken under the most difficult conditions, developed in improvised photo laboratories or sent directly to the editorial offices without prior viewing.
Through these images, the Magnum Contact Sheets exhibition traces the evolution and decline of a mode of operation that was so ubiquitous that it seemed an inevitable and inseparable part of the photographic process: the use of the contact sheet as a record of one's photographs, as a tool for editing, and as an index for an archive of negatives. The contact sheet, a direct print of a roll of film or a negative sequence, is the photographer's first look at what he or she has captured on film. It provides a unique, intimate glimpse into the working process, allowing photographers to make initial judgments about photographic quality and image content. The contact sheet records every step along the way to an image, giving you the feeling of accompanying the photographer behind the scenes and seeing through his or her eyes. The contact sheet provides insight into the selection process of photographers and editors and records how an image was created.
