True Pictures?
Zeitgenössische Fotografie aus Kanada und den USA

Ähnlich wie die nordamerikanische bildende Kunst der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre galt auch die nordamerikanische Fotografie dieser Zeit lange Jahre als vorbildhaft. Als aber die künstlerische Fotografie in Europa ab den 1980er-Jahren eigenständige Wege einschlug, schien die Orientierung an der amerikanischen Fotografie für viele jüngere Künstler_innen nicht mehr verbindlich.
Die groß angelegte Ausstellung True Pictures? reagiert auf diesen Umstand, indem sie mit einem offeneren Blick die nordamerikanische Fotografie der Gegenwart vorstellt. Analog zur künstlerischen Emanzipation der Fotografie in Europa identifiziert die Ausstellung die ausgehenden 1970er-Jahre als Ausgangspunkt eines grundlegenden Wandels im Verständnis der Fotografie in Nordamerika. Zu dieser Zeit kam es zur „Erfindung“ des großformatigen Tableaus als Bildform, das Jeff Wall mit seinen Leuchtkästen erstmals einsetzte. Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf das Werk von Künstler_innen der Jahrgänge 1946 bis 1989 und auf die ebenso verschiedenartigen wie weitreichenden Folgen eines neuen Verständnisses von Fotografie in Nordamerika.
Zur Ausstellung erscheint eine Publikation in deutscher und englischer Sprache im Snoeck-Verlag, Köln.
A l'instar des arts plastiques nord-américains des années 1950 et 1960, la photographie nord-américaine de cette époque a été considérée pendant de nombreuses années comme un modèle. Mais lorsque la photographie artistique européenne s'est engagée dans des voies indépendantes à partir des années 1980, l'orientation vers la photographie américaine ne semblait plus contraignante pour de nombreux jeunes artistes.
L'exposition à grande échelle True Pictures ? réagit à cette situation en présentant la photographie nord-américaine contemporaine avec un regard plus ouvert. Par analogie avec l'émancipation artistique de la photographie en Europe, l'exposition identifie la fin des années 1970 comme le point de départ d'un changement fondamental dans la compréhension de la photographie en Amérique du Nord. C'est à cette époque qu'a eu lieu "l'invention" du tableau de grand format comme forme d'image, que Jeff Wall a utilisé pour la première fois avec ses caissons lumineux. L'exposition se concentre sur l'œuvre d'artistes nés entre 1946 et 1989 et sur les conséquences aussi diverses que vastes d'une nouvelle conception de la photographie en Amérique du Nord.
Une publication en allemand et en anglais paraît à l'occasion de l'exposition aux éditions Snoeck-Verlag, Cologne.

Ma quando la fotografia artistica in Europa cominciò a prendere la propria strada negli anni '80, l'orientamento verso la fotografia americana non sembrava più vincolante per molti giovani artisti.
La grande mostra True Pictures? risponde a questa circostanza presentando la fotografia contemporanea nordamericana con uno sguardo più aperto. Analogamente all'emancipazione artistica della fotografia in Europa, la mostra identifica la fine degli anni Settanta come il punto di partenza di un cambiamento fondamentale nella comprensione della fotografia in Nord America. Questa fu l'epoca dell'"invenzione" del tableau di grande formato come forma d'immagine, che Jeff Wall utilizzò per la prima volta con i suoi light box. La mostra si concentra sul lavoro di artisti nati tra il 1946 e il 1989 e sulle conseguenze diverse e di vasta portata di una nuova comprensione della fotografia in Nord America.

US-American photography of the 1950s and 1960s was considered exemplary, as were the country's visual arts more generally. But when artistic photography in Europe began to strike out on its own paths in the 1980s, many younger artists no longer felt a compelling need to orient themselves toward American photography.
The large-scale exhibition True Pictures? responds to this state of affairs by presenting a more open view of contemporary photography in North America. In line with the artistic emancipation of photography in Europe, this exhibition identifies the late 1970s as a starting point for a fundamental shift in the understanding of photography in North America. The pictorial form of the large-format tableau was “invented,” used for the first time by Jeff Wall with his lightboxes. This exhibition focuses on the work of artists born between 1946 and 1989 and on the diverse, far-reaching consequences of this new understanding of photography that emerged in North America.
Snoeck-Verlag of Cologne will be bringing out a publication in German and English to accompany this exhibition.
