Der Fotograf Horst H. Baumann (1934 – 2019) zählte zu den Shooting-Stars seiner Generation. Schon in jungen Jahren mehrfach ausgezeichnet, avancierte der Autodidakt ab den 1960er Jahren zu einem in den gedruckten Medien omnipräsenten, höchst erfolgreichen Fotografen. ZEPHYR – Raum für Fotografie in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen erinnert ab dem 6. November 2022 im neuen Museum Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus mit ausgewählten Fotografien aus seinem Lebenswerk unter dem Titel „Apropos Visionär. Der Fotograf Horst H. Baumann“ an den deutschen Fotokünstler. Vor allem seine Fotografien von Autorennen machten ihn berühmt, später auch die Lichtkunst, mit der er sich beispielsweise 1977 auf der documenta 6 in Kassel präsentierte. Bis heute leuchtet der grüne Laserstrahl regelmäßig als nächtliches Wahrzeichen der hessischen Kunstmetropole. Dass er heute nur noch in Fotofachkreisen bekannt ist, mag vielleicht daran liegen, dass er sich in späteren Jahren nie der Musealisierung seiner Arbeit, sondern fast ausschließlich seiner Kunst gewidmet hat. Diese gilt es nun in der retrospektiven Ausstellung anhand größtenteils erstmals in der Öffentlichkeit präsentierten Fotografien zu entdecken. Begleitend zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Fotobuch im Steidl Verlag.
Die Ausstellung zeigt etwa 400 ausgewählte Werke aus dem künstlerischen Nachlass des Fotografen. Als Horst H. Baumann vor drei Jahren verstarb, übergab seine Tochter den gesamten bildnerischen Nachlass zur Bearbeitung und für eine Ausstellung an ZEPHYR – Raum für Fotografie in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim. Er umfasst ca. 3.500 Schwarz/Weiß-Fotografien, ca. 750 Farbabzüge, ungezählte Dias und zahlreiche Dokumente, Zeitschriften und Bücher.
Baumanns frühe Schwarzweiß-Fotografie zeichnet ein hohes Maß an Empathie und sein ehrliches Interesse an sozialen Themen aus. Markant wird sein Werk durch seine konsequente Suche nach einem eigenen Ausdruck in der Kamerakunst, nach einer Bildästhetik im Geist eines, wie man heute sagen würde, „subjektiven Dokumentarismus“. Noch aus dem vermeintlich banalsten Sujet wusste Baumann durch den gezielten Einsatz partieller Schärfe, durch kühne An- oder Ausschnitte, dynamische Perspektiven oder ein Spiel mit Vorder- und Hintergrund seine Art von Fotografie zu extrahieren. So überraschte und irritierte er immer wieder und wusste sich vom eher journalistischen Zugriff seiner Zeitgenossen abzusetzen. Hinzu kam sein frühes Interesse an der Farbe, die Baumann schnell als zusätzliche große künstlerische Herausforderung begriff, wofür er schon Mitte der 1960er Jahre internationale Anerkennung gewann. Ganz im Sinne von „New Color“ fotografierte Baumann nicht einfach farbig, er dachte die Farbe und nutzte sie als Stil- und Ausdrucksmittel. Am bekanntesten sind hier sicher seine Bilder aus der Formel 1 in den 1960er Jahren. Ganz neu zu entdecken sind seine freien Arbeiten, die seit den 1950er Jahren von Eleganz, Schönheit und Dynamik geprägt sind, die ihresgleichen suchen.
Die Ausstellung wird von Hans-Michael Koetzle (München) kuratiert und ist vom 6. November 2022 bis 29. Mai 2023 im neuen Museum Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus der Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim zu sehen. Das neue Museum wird nach dreijähriger Bauzeit im November diesen Jahres feierlich eröffnet und ist schwerpunktmäßig den Themen Glaskunst und Fotografie gewidmet. Zu Ehren der Stifter zeigen die Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen die Eröffnungsausstellung „Herzklopfen – Zeitgenössische Glaskunst aus der Sammlung Peter und Traudl Engelhorn“. Im Zuge der Neueröffnung ist auch die renommierte Galerie ZEPHYR zu Gast im neuen Haus und präsentiert die Sonderausstellung „Apropos Visionär. Der Fotograf Horst H. Baumann“.
Le photographe Horst H. Baumann (1934 - 2019) comptait parmi les étoiles filantes de sa génération. Déjà primé à plusieurs reprises dans sa jeunesse, cet autodidacte est devenu, à partir des années 1960, un photographe omniprésent dans les médias imprimés et qui a connu un grand succès. ZEPHYR - Espace pour la photographie dans les musées Reiss-Engelhorn rappelle à partir du 6 novembre 2022 dans le nouveau musée Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus avec des photographies sélectionnées de l'œuvre de sa vie sous le titre "A propos de visionnaire. Le photographe Horst H. Baumann" à l'artiste photographe allemand. Ce sont surtout ses photographies de courses automobiles qui l'ont rendu célèbre, mais aussi, plus tard, l'art de la lumière, avec lequel il s'est par exemple présenté à la documenta 6 de Kassel en 1977. Aujourd'hui encore, le rayon laser vert brille régulièrement comme emblème nocturne de la métropole artistique de Hesse. S'il n'est plus connu aujourd'hui que des spécialistes de la photographie, c'est peut-être parce que, plus tard, il ne s'est jamais consacré à la muséification de son travail, mais presque exclusivement à son art. C'est ce qu'il s'agit de découvrir dans cette exposition rétrospective, à travers des photographies présentées pour la plupart pour la première fois au public. L'exposition s'accompagne de la publication d'un livre de photos aux éditions Steidl.
L'exposition présente environ 400 œuvres sélectionnées parmi l'héritage artistique du photographe. Lorsque Horst H. Baumann est décédé il y a trois ans, sa fille a confié l'ensemble de son héritage pictural à ZEPHYR - Raum für Fotografie dans les musées Reiss-Engelhorn à Mannheim, afin qu'il soit traité et exposé. Il comprend environ 3 500 photographies en noir et blanc, environ 750 tirages couleur, d'innombrables diapositives et de nombreux documents, magazines et livres.
Les premières photographies en noir et blanc de Baumann se caractérisent par un haut degré d'empathie et un intérêt sincère pour les thèmes sociaux. Son œuvre se distingue par sa recherche systématique d'une expression propre dans l'art de la caméra, d'une esthétique de l'image dans l'esprit de ce que l'on appellerait aujourd'hui un "documentarisme subjectif". Même à partir du sujet prétendument le plus banal, Baumann savait extraire son type de photographie par l'utilisation ciblée d'une netteté partielle, par des cadrages ou des recadrages audacieux, des perspectives dynamiques ou un jeu avec le premier et l'arrière-plan. Ainsi, il surprenait et irritait sans cesse et savait se démarquer de l'approche plutôt journalistique de ses contemporains. A cela s'ajoute son intérêt précoce pour la couleur, que Baumann a rapidement considérée comme un grand défi artistique supplémentaire, ce qui lui a valu une reconnaissance internationale dès le milieu des années 1960. Tout à fait dans l'esprit du "New Color", Baumann ne se contentait pas de photographier en couleur, il pensait la couleur et l'utilisait comme un moyen de style et d'expression. Ses visuels de la Formule 1 dans les années 1960 sont certainement les plus connus à cet égard. Ce sont ses travaux libres, marqués par une élégance, une beauté et un dynamisme sans pareil depuis les années 1950, qui sont à redécouvrir.
L'exposition est organisée par Hans-Michael Koetzle (Munich) et sera présentée du 6 novembre 2022 au 29 mai 2023 dans le nouveau musée Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus des musées Reiss-Engelhorn de Mannheim. Le nouveau musée sera inauguré en novembre de cette année après trois ans de travaux et sera principalement consacré à l'art du verre et à la photographie. En l'honneur des donateurs, les musées Reiss-Engelhorn présentent l'exposition inaugurale "Herzklopfen - Zeitgenössische Glaskunst aus der Sammlung Peter und Traudl Engelhorn". Il fotografo autodidatta vinse diversi premi in giovane età e, a partire dagli anni Sessanta, divenne un fotografo di grande successo, onnipresente sulla carta stampata. ZEPHYR - Raum für Fotografie in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen commemorerà Horst H. Baumann a partire dal 6 novembre 2022 nel nuovo Museo Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus con fotografie selezionate dal lavoro della sua vita sotto il titolo "Apropos Visionary. Il fotografo Horst H. Baumann" all'artista fotografico tedesco. Sono state soprattutto le sue fotografie di gare automobilistiche a renderlo famoso, e in seguito anche la light art con cui si è presentato, ad esempio, alla documenta 6 di Kassel nel 1977. Ancora oggi, il raggio laser verde brilla regolarmente come punto di riferimento notturno della metropoli artistica dell'Assia. Il fatto che oggi sia conosciuto solo in ambito fotografico è forse dovuto al fatto che negli ultimi anni non si è mai dedicato alla musealizzazione del suo lavoro, ma quasi esclusivamente alla sua arte. Questa mostra retrospettiva è un'occasione per scoprire la sua arte attraverso le fotografie, la maggior parte delle quali viene presentata al pubblico per la prima volta. La mostra è accompagnata da un libro fotografico pubblicato da Steidl Verlag.
La mostra presenta circa 400 opere selezionate dal patrimonio artistico del fotografo. Alla morte di Horst H. Baumann, tre anni fa, la figlia ha donato l'intero patrimonio pittorico a ZEPHYR - Raum für Fotografie nel Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen di Mannheim per l'elaborazione e la realizzazione di una mostra. Si tratta di circa 3.500 fotografie in bianco e nero, circa 750 stampe a colori, innumerevoli diapositive e numerosi documenti, riviste e libri.
Le prime fotografie in bianco e nero di Baumann sono caratterizzate da un alto grado di empatia e dall'onesto interesse per le questioni sociali. Ciò che contraddistingue il suo lavoro è la ricerca costante della propria espressione nell'arte della macchina da presa, di un'estetica dell'immagine nello spirito di quello che oggi si chiamerebbe "documentarismo soggettivo". Baumann sapeva come estrarre il suo tipo di fotografia anche dal soggetto più apparentemente banale attraverso l'uso deliberato di una messa a fuoco parziale, di angoli audaci o di ritagli, di prospettive dinamiche o di un gioco di primo piano e sfondo. In questo modo, sorprendeva e irritava continuamente e sapeva distinguersi dall'approccio più giornalistico dei suoi contemporanei. A ciò si aggiunge il precoce interesse per il colore, che Baumann comprese subito come un'ulteriore grande sfida artistica, per la quale ottenne un riconoscimento internazionale già a metà degli anni Sessanta. Nello spirito del "New Colour", Baumann non si limitava a fotografare a colori, ma pensava al colore e lo usava come mezzo di stile ed espressione. Le più famose sono certamente le sue foto della Formula 1 negli anni '60. Da riscoprire sono le sue opere libere, che dagli anni Cinquanta sono caratterizzate da eleganza, bellezza e dinamica senza pari.
La mostra è curata da Hans-Michael Koetzle (Monaco di Baviera) e sarà visitabile nel nuovo Museo Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus del Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim dal 6 novembre 2022 al 29 maggio 2023. Il nuovo museo sarà inaugurato ufficialmente nel novembre di quest'anno, dopo tre anni di costruzione, e si concentrerà sull'arte del vetro e sulla fotografia. In onore dei donatori, il Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen presenterà la mostra inaugurale "Herzklopfen - Contemporary Glass Art from the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Collection". The photographer Horst H. Baumann (1934 - 2019) was one of the shooting stars of his generation. Already awarded several prizes at a young age, the self-taught photographer advanced from the 1960s to become an omnipresent, highly successful photographer in the printed media. ZEPHYR - Raum für Fotografie in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen commemorates from November 6, 2022 in the new museum Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus with selected photographs from his life's work under the title "Apropos Visionary. The Photographer Horst H. Baumann" to the German photo artist. It was above all his photographs of car races that made him famous, and later also the light art with which he presented himself, for example, at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977. Baumann died three years ago, his daughter gave the entire pictorial estate to ZEPHYR - Raum für Fotografie in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim for processing and for an exhibition. It includes about 3,500 black-and-white photographs, about 750 color prints, uncounted slides, and numerous documents, magazines, and books.
Baumann's early black-and-white photography is characterized by a high degree of empathy and his honest interest in social issues. His work is made distinctive by his consistent search for his own expression in camera art, for an image aesthetic in the spirit of what today would be called "subjective documentarism." Even from the supposedly most banal subject, Baumann knew how to extract his kind of photography through the deliberate use of partial focus, bold angles or cropping, dynamic perspectives, or a play with foreground and background. In this way, he surprised and irritated time and again and knew how to set himself apart from the more journalistic approach of his contemporaries. Added to this was his early interest in color, which Baumann quickly understood as an additional major artistic challenge, for which he won international recognition as early as the mid-1960s. In keeping with the spirit of "New Color," Baumann did not simply photograph in color; he thought of color and used it as a stylistic and expressive medium. Best known here are of course his images of Formula 1 in the 1960s. Completely new to discover are his free works, which since the 1950s are characterized by elegance, beauty and dynamics that are unparalleled.
The exhibition is curated by Hans-Michael Koetzle (Munich) and will be on view in the new Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus Museum of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim from November 6, 2022 to May 29, 2023.
