In ihrer künstlerischen Praxis beschäftigt sich die in Zürich und Dakar lebende italienisch-senegalesische Künstlerin Adji Dieye (*1991) mit den Themen Postkolonialismus und Nationalstaatenbildung. Dabei untersucht sie, welche Rolle Sprache und Bilder in der Geschichtsschreibung spielen und hinterfragt diese als lineare Abfolge von Ereignissen kritisch. Im Mittelpunkt von Dieyes Ausstellung steht die Videoinstallation Aphasia (2022), die während eines mehrmonatigen Forschungsaufenthalts in Dakar, Senegal, eigens für das Fotomuseum Winterthur produziert wurde.
Orten in Dakar. An der Schnittstelle von Fotografie, Video und Performance legt Dieye die Widersprüche institutioneller Erzählungen in Bezug auf nationale Wissensproduktionen offen. Aphasia beleuchtet nicht nur die Funktion, die institutionelle Archive bei der Konstruktion von Identität und dem öffentlichen Raum einnehmen, sondern untersucht auch Sprache an sich sowie die Bedeutung des mündlichen Geschichtenerzählens als alternatives Wissenssystem. Hierbei bezieht sich die Künstlerin unter anderem auf ihren eigenen biografischen Hintergrund.
Das Ausstellungsprojekt wurde im Rahmen von Photographic Encounters entwickelt, einem biennalen Format, mit dem das Fotomuseum Winterthur in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Christoph Merian Verlag Fotograf_innen und Künstler_innen die Realisierung einer Ausstellung sowie einer begleitenden Publikation ermöglicht und damit die Umsetzung und Präsentation eines fotografischen Langzeitprojekts unterstützt. Adji Dieye wurde für die erste Ausgabe ausgewählt.
Das Format Photographic Encounters wird durch die Kollaboration mit der Christoph Merian Stiftung und der Verena und Roland Geissmann Stiftung: Geissmann Scholarship for Photography ermöglicht.
Dans sa pratique artistique, l'artiste italo-sénégalaise Adji Dieye (*1991), qui vit à Zurich et à Dakar, s'intéresse aux thèmes du postcolonialisme et de la formation des États-nations. Ce faisant, elle examine le rôle que jouent le langage et les visuels dans l'écriture de l'histoire et remet en question de manière critique cette dernière en tant que succession linéaire d'événements. L'exposition de Dieye est centrée sur l'installation vidéo Aphasia (2022), qui a été produite spécialement pour le Fotomuseum Winterthur lors d'un séjour de recherche de plusieurs mois à Dakar, au Sénégal.

Aphasia ne met pas seulement en lumière la fonction des archives institutionnelles dans la construction de l'identité et de l'espace public, mais examine également le langage en soi ainsi que l'importance du récit oral comme système de connaissance alternatif. Pour ce faire, l'artiste se réfère entre autres à son propre contexte biographique.
Le projet d'exposition a été développé dans le cadre de Photographic Encounters, un format biennal par lequel le Fotomuseum Winterthur, en collaboration avec les éditions Christoph Merian, permet à des photographes et des artistes de réaliser une exposition ainsi qu'une publication d'accompagnement, soutenant ainsi la réalisation et la présentation d'un projet photographique à long terme. Adji Dieye a été choisie pour la première édition.

Nella sua pratica artistica, l'artista italo-senegalese Adji Dieye (*1991), che vive a Zurigo e Dakar, affronta i temi del postcolonialismo e della formazione dello Stato-nazione. In questo modo, esamina il ruolo che il linguaggio e le immagini giocano nella scrittura della storia e la mette criticamente in discussione come sequenza lineare di eventi. Al centro della mostra di Dieye c'è la videoinstallazione Aphasia (2022), realizzata appositamente per il Fotomuseum Winterthur durante un soggiorno di ricerca di alcuni mesi a Dakar, in Senegal.
Sedi a Dakar. All'incrocio tra fotografia, video e performance, Dieye espone le contraddizioni delle narrazioni istituzionali in relazione alle produzioni nazionali di conoscenza. Afasia non solo illumina la funzione che gli archivi istituzionali svolgono nella costruzione dell'identità e dello spazio pubblico, ma esamina anche il linguaggio stesso e l'importanza della narrazione orale come sistema alternativo di conoscenza. Qui l'artista fa riferimento, tra l'altro, al proprio background biografico.
Il progetto espositivo è stato sviluppato nell'ambito di Photographic Encounters, un format biennale con cui il Fotomuseum Winterthur, in collaborazione con Christoph Merian Verlag, consente a fotografi e artisti di realizzare una mostra e una pubblicazione di accompagnamento, sostenendo così la realizzazione e la presentazione di un progetto fotografico a lungo termine. Adji Dieye è stato selezionato per la prima edizione.

In her artistic practice, the Italian-Senegalese artist Adji Dieye (*1991), who lives in Zurich and Dakar, deals with the themes of postcolonialism and nation-state formation. In doing so, she examines the role that language and images play in the writing of history and critically questions it as a linear sequence of events. At the center of Dieye's exhibition is the video installation Aphasia (2022), which was produced especially for Fotomuseum Winterthur during a research stay of several months in Dakar, Senegal.
Locations in Dakar. At the intersection of photography, video, and performance, Dieye exposes the contradictions of institutional narratives in relation to national productions of knowledge. Aphasia not only illuminates the function that institutional archives play in the construction of identity and public space, but also examines language itself and the importance of oral storytelling as an alternative system of knowledge. Here, the artist refers to her own biographical background, among other things.
