Im Rahmen der Art City Bologna 2022 und anlässlich der ARTEFIERA präsentiert Spazio Labo' die erste Einzelausstellung der amerikanischen Künstlerin Ahndraya Parlato (Kailua, Hawaii) in Italien. Die Ausstellung, eine Originalproduktion von Spazio Labo', kuratiert von Laura De Marco, geht auf Parlatos zweite Monografie zurück, das Buch Who is Changed and Who is Dead, das im Juli 2021 vom britischen Verlag Mack Books veröffentlicht wurde.
In Who is Changed and Who is Dead geht Parlato von zwei fundamentalen und grundlegenden Ereignissen in seinem Privatleben aus, dem Selbstmord seiner Mutter und der Geburt seiner Töchter, um ein Projekt zu entwickeln, das die widersprüchlichen und komplexen Facetten der Mutterschaft - die Bewältigung der Ängste und Befürchtungen, die mit der Geburt anderer Menschen verbunden sind, aber nicht nur das -, der Mutter-Tochter-Beziehung und eines der grundlegenden Themen im Leben eines jeden Menschen erforscht: das Ende des Lebens selbst.
Who is Changed and Who is Dead ist ein äußerst reichhaltiges und aussagekräftiges Buch, das die erzählerischen Mittel der Fotografie und des Schreibens miteinander verwebt und durch den meisterhaften Einsatz von Genres und Sprachen eine einzigartige Erzählung und ein facettenreiches und tiefgründiges Werk schafft. Verwoben mit einer Reihe von Geschichten, die Parlato selbst geschrieben hat - idealerweise in zwei Teile geteilt, einer an ihre Töchter und einer an ihre Mutter - finden wir Stillleben, Landschaften, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen, Porträts, Fotogramme, die mit der Asche ihrer Mutter angefertigt wurden, und Verweise auf die fotografische Tradition der "verborgenen Mutter" des 19. Wir finden die Körper der Töchter der Autorin, die mit mütterlicher Intimität und gleichzeitig kontemplativer Distanz fotografiert wurden. Innerhalb dieser Komplexität versucht Parlato, grundlegende Fragen wie Sterblichkeit, Geschlecht und Elternschaft zu erhellen. Letztlich das Leben selbst. Unterscheiden sich die heutigen Ängste, so fragt Parlato, von denen, die Mütter im Laufe der Geschichte erlebt haben? Wie unscharf ist die Grenze zwischen den Rollen von Mutter und Tochter? Gibt es spezifische Ängste im Zusammenhang mit der Geburt weiblicher Kinder? Inwieweit ist die Mutterschaft selbst, wie das Geschlecht, eine Konstruktion?
Die Einzelausstellung im Spazio Labo' bietet die Gelegenheit, den amerikanischen Künstler kennenzulernen, der während der Art City in einer Reihe von kostenlosen Veranstaltungen, darunter ein Gespräch und eine Führung, mit dem Publikum zusammentrifft und in einem zweitägigen Workshop, für den nur eine begrenzte Anzahl von Plätzen zur Verfügung steht, mit einer Klasse von Studentinnen und Studenten interagiert.
Anlässlich der Ausstellung wird Ahndraya Parlatos signiertes Buch Who is Changed and Who is Dead (Mack Books, 2021) zu sehen und zu kaufen sein.
Ahndraya Parlato wurde in Kailua, Hawaii, USA, geboren. Sie hat einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Fotografie vom Bard College und einen Master of Fine Arts vom California College of the Arts. Sein neuestes Buch, Who Is Changed and Who Is Dead, wurde 2021 von Mack Books veröffentlicht. Ihre erste Monografie, A Spectacle and Nothing Strange, erschien 2016 im Kehrer Verlag, und ihr Projekt mit Gregory Halpern, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, wurde 2014 von Études Books veröffentlicht. Ahndraya unterrichtet seit sechzehn Jahren Fotografie und ist derzeit Mitglied des Lehrkörpers des Rochester Institute of Technology.
Dans le cadre d'Art City Bologna 2022, à l'occasion d'ARTEFIERA, Spazio Labo' présente la première exposition personnelle en Italie de l'artiste américaine Ahndraya Parlato (Kailua, Hawaii). L'exposition, une production originale de Spazio Labo' dont le commissaire est Laura De Marco, découle de la deuxième monographie de Parlato, le livre Who is Changed and Who is Dead publié en juillet 2021 par l'éditeur britannique Mack Books.
Dans Qui est changé et qui est mort, Parlato part de deux événements fondamentaux et fondateurs de sa vie privée, le suicide de sa mère et la naissance de ses filles, pour construire un projet qui explore les facettes contradictoires et complexes de la maternité - de la gestion des peurs et des angoisses liées à la mise au monde d'autres personnes, mais pas seulement -, de la relation mère-fille et de l'un des thèmes fondamentaux de la vie de tout être humain : la fin de la vie elle-même.
Who is Changed and Who is Dead est un livre extrêmement riche et articulé qui entrelace les outils narratifs de la photographie et de l'écriture, créant un récit unique et un corpus d'œuvres multifacettes et profondes grâce à une utilisation magistrale des genres et des langages. Entrelacés avec une série de récits écrits par Parlato elle-même - idéalement divisés en deux parties, l'une adressée à ses filles et l'autre à sa mère - nous trouvons des natures mortes, des paysages, des sculptures, des dessins, des portraits, des photogrammes réalisés avec les cendres de sa mère et des références à la tradition photographique du XIXe siècle de la "mère cachée". On y trouve les corps des filles de l'auteur, photographiés avec une intimité maternelle et en même temps un détachement contemplatif. Dans cette complexité, Parlato cherche à faire la lumière sur des questions fondamentales telles que la mortalité, le genre et la parentalité. En fin de compte, la vie elle-même. Les craintes contemporaines sont-elles, selon Mme Parlato, différentes de celles qu'ont connues les mères au cours de l'histoire ? Dans quelle mesure la frontière des rôles entre une mère et une fille est-elle floue ? Existe-t-il des angoisses spécifiques liées au fait d'avoir des enfants de sexe féminin ? Dans quelle mesure la maternité elle-même, comme le genre, est-elle une construction ?
L'exposition personnelle à Spazio Labo' est l'occasion de rencontrer l'artiste américain, qui, pendant Art City, rencontrera le public lors d'une série d'événements gratuits, dont une conférence et une visite guidée, et interagira avec une classe d'étudiants et d'étudiantes dans le cadre d'un atelier de deux jours dont le nombre de places est limité.

Ahndraya Parlato est née à Kailua, Hawaii, USA. Elle est titulaire d'une licence en photographie du Bard College et d'une maîtrise en beaux-arts du California College of the Arts. Son dernier livre, Who Is Changed and Who Is Dead, a été publié par Mack Books en 2021. Sa première monographie, A Spectacle and Nothing Strange, a été publiée par Kehrer Verlag en 2016, et son projet avec Gregory Halpern, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, a été publié par Études Books en 2014. Ahndraya enseigne la photographie depuis seize ans et fait actuellement partie du corps enseignant du Rochester Institute of Technology.
Nell’ambito di Art City Bologna 2022 in occasione di ARTEFIERA, Spazio Labo’ presenta la prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista statunitense Ahndraya Parlato (Kailua, Hawaii). La mostra, produzione originale di Spazio Labo’ a cura di Laura De Marco, nasce dalla seconda monografia di Parlato, il libro Who is Changed and Who is Dead pubblicato a luglio 2021 dall’editore britannico Mack Books.
In Who is Changed and Who is Dead Parlato parte da due eventi fondamentali e fondanti della sua vita privata, il suicidio della madre e la nascita delle sue figlie, per costruire un progetto che esplora le contraddittorie e complesse sfaccettature della maternità – della gestione delle paure e delle ansie legate al mettere al mondo altre persone, ma non solo –, del rapporto madre-figlia, e di uno dei temi fondamentali della vita di ogni essere umano: la fine della vita stessa.
Who is Changed and Who is Dead è un libro estremamente ricco e articolato che intreccia gli strumenti narrativi della fotografia e della scrittura creando una narrazione unica e un corpo di lavoro sfaccettato e profondo attraverso un magistrale utilizzo di generi e linguaggi. Intrecciati a una serie di racconti scritti da Parlato stessa – idealmente divisi in due parti, una indirizzata alle figlie e una alla madre – troviamo still life, paesaggi, sculture, disegni, ritratti, fotogrammi realizzati usando le ceneri della madre e riferimenti alla tradizione fotografica ottocentesca delle “madri nascoste”. Troviamo i corpi delle figlie dell’autrice, fotografati con intimità materna e allo stesso tempo distacco contemplativo. All’interno di questa complessità Parlato cerca di fare chiarezza su questioni fondamentali come la mortalità, il genere, la genitorialità. In fondo, la vita stessa. Le paure contemporanee, si chiede Parlato, sono diverse da quelle provate dalle madri nel corso della storia? Quanto è labile il confine dei ruoli tra una madre a una figlia? Esistono ansie specifiche legate all’avere figli di sesso femminile? Quanto la maternità stessa, come il genere, è una costruzione?
La mostra personale a Spazio Labo’ è un'occasione di incontro con l’artista americana che in occasione di Art City incontrerà il pubblico in una serie di eventi gratuiti, tra i quali un talk e una visita guidata, e interagirà con una classe di studenti e studentesse all’interno di un workshop di due giorni con numero limitato di posti disponibili.

As part of Art City Bologna 2022 on the occasion of ARTEFIERA, Spazio Labo' presents the first solo exhibition in Italy of the American artist Ahndraya Parlato (Kailua, Hawaii). The exhibition, an original production by Spazio Labo' curated by Laura De Marco, is based on Parlato's second monograph, the book Who is Changed and Who is Dead published in July 2021 by the British publisher Mack Books.
In Who is Changed and Who is Dead Parlato starts from two fundamental and founding events of his private life, the suicide of his mother and the birth of his daughters, to build a project that explores the contradictory and complex facets of motherhood - of the management of fears and anxieties related to giving birth to other people, but not only -, of the mother-daughter relationship, and of one of the fundamental themes of the life of every human being: the end of life itself.
Who is Changed and Who is Dead is an extremely rich and articulated book that interweaves the narrative tools of photography and writing, creating a unique narrative and a multifaceted and profound body of work through a masterful use of genres and languages. Interwoven with a series of stories written by Parlato herself - ideally divided into two parts, one addressed to her daughters and one to her mother - we find still life, landscapes, sculptures, drawings, portraits, photograms made using her mother's ashes and references to the nineteenth-century photographic tradition of the "hidden mothers". We find the bodies of the author's daughters, photographed with maternal intimacy and at the same time contemplative detachment. Within this complexity Parlato tries to shed light on fundamental issues such as mortality, gender, parenthood. Ultimately, life itself. Are contemporary fears, Parlato asks, different from those felt by mothers throughout history? How blurred is the boundary of roles between a mother and a daughter? Are there specific anxieties related to having female children? How much is motherhood itself, like gender, a construction?
The solo exhibition at Spazio Labo' is an opportunity to meet the American artist who, on the occasion of Art City, will meet the public in a series of free events, including a talk and a guided tour, and will interact with a class of male and female students in a two-day workshop with a limited number of places available.
In conjunction with the exhibition, it will be possible to view and purchase Ahndraya Parlato's autographed book Who is Changed and Who is Dead (Mack Books, 2021).
