Die Ausstellung mit dem Titel "The learning photographer" zeigt mehr als 30 anspruchsvolle Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien aus Gelatinesilber, die auf Barytpapier gedruckt wurden. Die Negative stammen aus dem Archiv des deutschen Künstlers und wurden von der Leitung der Galerie und dem Künstler sorgfältig ausgewählt.
Die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Werke zeichnen eine fünfzigjährige Karriere nach, die in den siebziger Jahren begann, als der Künstler an der Restaurierung des Eremo von Santa Caterina auf der Insel Elba beteiligt war. Berger verwandelte das ehemalige Franziskanerkloster in ein internationales Kunstzentrum, das sich jahrelang als Schmelztiegel für die Ideen und Erfahrungen von Künstlerfreunden, Schriftstellern, Malern und Fotografen erwies. Hier fand die entscheidende Begegnung zwischen Berger und dem französischen Schriftsteller und Kritiker Hervé Guibert statt, mit dem er - abgesehen von einer starken emotionalen Verbindung - eine fotografische und intellektuelle Beziehung aufbaute.
Die Ausstellung zeigt Bergers persönliche und künstlerische Reisen sowie seine Reisen durch Asien. Die Fotografien offenbaren die enge Verbindung, die der Künstler zu diesen Orten und ihren Bewohnern aufbaute. Dank eines tiefen gemeinsamen Verständnisses zwischen Berger und seinen Motiven überwindet der Fotograf die emotionale Distanz zwischen dem Fotografen und dem Objekt der Darstellung und präsentiert uns ein intimes Porträt des Orients.
Ziel der Ausstellung ist es, die Geschichte eines Lebens und einer Karriere jenseits des Gewöhnlichen zu erzählen. Die vielen verschiedenen Themen, die gezeigt werden, repräsentieren Bergers zahllose Erfahrungen und berühren den Betrachter, der daraus ein kohärentes fil rouge mitnimmt: die Suche nach Intimität zwischen Fotograf und Subjekt, die Berger bereits mit Guibert erprobt hatte und die dann zu seiner eigenen Bildsprache und stilistischen Chiffre wird. Von der Sinnlichkeit seiner Akte und ungemachten Betten bis hin zu seinen Landschaften und Porträts des Orients liegt die Kraft dieser Fotografien in der Fähigkeit des Künstlers, die Seele all seiner Sujets zu vermitteln, indem er ausnahmslos kraftvolle und poetische Bilder von radikal unterschiedlichen Subjekten in weit entfernten Ländern schafft. Es ist eine außergewöhnliche, wahrscheinlich einzigartige Reise in das Zentrum der großen zeitgenössischen Fotografie.
Die Ausstellung wird von dem Kunstbuch "Hans Georg Berger" begleitet, das vom Künstler persönlich signiert ist und durch die Hinzufügung eines Originalbildes noch wertvoller wird. Das Buch wurde von der Galerie 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum der Kulturen in Lugano in limitierter Auflage herausgegeben und enthält exakte Reproduktionen von 75 Fotografien, von denen einige noch nie zu sehen waren, sowie Texte und Gedichte von berühmten Schriftstellern und Persönlichkeiten, die das Leben des Künstlers begleitet haben.
L'exposition, intitulée "The learning photographer", rassemble plus de 30 photographies sophistiquées en noir et blanc à la gélatine argentique, imprimées sur du papier baryté, réalisées à partir de négatifs conservés dans les archives de l'artiste allemand et soigneusement sélectionnés par les directeurs de la galerie et l'artiste.
Les œuvres de l'exposition retracent une carrière de cinquante ans qui a débuté dans les années soixante-dix lorsque l'artiste s'est impliqué dans la restauration de l'Eremo de Santa Caterina sur l'île d'Elbe. Berger a transformé l'ancien monastère franciscain en un centre d'art international qui, pendant des années, s'est avéré être un creuset pour les idées et les expériences d'amis artistes, écrivains, peintres et photographes. C'est là qu'a eu lieu la rencontre décisive entre Berger et l'écrivain et critique français Hervé Guibert, avec lequel il a établi - outre une forte connexion émotionnelle - une relation photographique et intellectuelle.
L'exposition retrace les voyages - tant personnels qu'artistiques - de Berger et ses déplacements en Asie. Ces photographies révèlent les liens étroits que l'artiste a tissés avec ces lieux et leurs habitants. Grâce à une profonde compréhension commune construite entre Berger et ses sujets, le photographe brise la distance émotionnelle entre le photographe et l'objet de la représentation, nous présentant un portrait intime de l'Orient.
L'objectif de l'exposition est de raconter l'histoire d'une vie et d'une carrière hors du commun. Les nombreux thèmes présentés représentent les innombrables expériences de Berger et touchent le spectateur qui en retire un fil rouge cohérent : la recherche de l'intimité entre le photographe et son sujet que Berger avait déjà expérimentée avec Guibert et qui devient alors son propre langage visuel et son propre code stylistique. De la sensualité de ses nus et lits défaits, à ses paysages et portraits d'Orient, la puissance de ces photographies réside dans la capacité de l'artiste à transmettre l'âme de tous ses sujets, créant, sans exception, des images puissantes et poétiques de sujets radicalement différents dans des contrées lointaines. C'est un voyage extraordinaire, probablement unique, au cœur de la grande photographie contemporaine.
L'exposition est accompagnée du livre d'art "Hans Georg Berger", signé personnellement par l'artiste et rendu plus précieux par l'ajout d'une œuvre d'art originale. Le livre a été publié en édition limitée par la galerie 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS en collaboration avec le Musée des Cultures de Lugano et contient des reproductions fidèles de soixante-quinze photographies - dont certaines inédites - accompagnées de textes et de matériel poétique provenant d'écrivains et de personnalités célèbres qui ont entouré la vie de l'artiste.

Le opere in mostra ripercorrono una carriera lunga cinquant'anni che inizia negli anni Settanta quando l'artista viene coinvolto nel restauro dell'Eremo di Santa Caterina all'Isola d'Elba. Berger trasforma l'ex convento francescano in un centro d'arte internazionale che per anni si rivela un crogiolo di idee ed esperienze di amici artisti, scrittori, pittori e fotografi. Fu qui che avvenne l'incontro cruciale tra Berger e lo scrittore e critico francese Hervé Guibert con il quale stabilì - oltre a un forte legame affettivo - un rapporto fotografico e intellettuale.
La mostra ripercorre i viaggi di Berger - sia personali che artistici - e i suoi viaggi in Asia. Queste fotografie rivelano gli stretti legami che l'artista ha costruito con questi luoghi e i loro abitanti. Grazie a una profonda intesa costruita tra Berger e i suoi soggetti, il fotografo abbatte la distanza emotiva tra il fotografo e l'oggetto della rappresentazione, presentandoci un ritratto intimo dell'Oriente.
Lo scopo della mostra è quello di raccontare la storia di una vita e di una carriera fuori dall'ordinario. I diversi temi esposti rappresentano le innumerevoli esperienze di Berger e colpiscono lo spettatore che ne trae un fil rouge coerente: la ricerca di intimità tra fotografo e soggetto che Berger aveva già sperimentato con Guibert e che diventa poi il suo proprio linguaggio visivo e cifra stilistica. Dalla sensualità dei nudi e dei letti sfatti, ai paesaggi e ai ritratti d'Oriente, la potenza di queste fotografie sta nella capacità dell'artista di trasmettere l'anima di tutti i suoi soggetti, creando, senza eccezioni, immagini potenti e poetiche di soggetti radicalmente diversi in terre lontane. È un viaggio straordinario, probabilmente unico, al centro della grande fotografia contemporanea.
La mostra è accompagnata dal libro d'arte 'Hans Georg Berger', firmato personalmente dall'artista e reso più prezioso dall'aggiunta di un'opera originale. Il libro è stato pubblicato in edizione limitata dalla galleria 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS in collaborazione con il Museo delle Culture di Lugano e contiene accurate riproduzioni di settantacinque fotografie - alcune delle quali inedite - accompagnate da testi e materiale poetico di famosi scrittori e personaggi che hanno circondato la vita dell'artista.
The exhibition, entitled ‘The learning photographer’, brings together more than 30 sophisticated black and white gelatin silver photographs printed on fine art baryta paper produced from negatives conserved in the German artist’s archive and carefully selected by the directors of the gallery and the artist.
The works in the exhibition retrace a fifty-year long career starting in the seventies when the artist became involved in the restoration of the Eremo of Santa Caterina on the Island of Elba. Berger transformed the ex Franciscan monastery into an international art centre which for years proved a melting pot for the ideas and experiences of artist friends, writers, painters and photographers. It was here that the pivotal meeting between Berger and the French writer and critic Hervé Guibert took place with whom he established – apart from a strong emotional connection – a photographic and intellectual relationship.
The exhibition charts Berger’s voyages – both personal and artistic – and his travels through Asia. These photographs reveal the close bonds that the artist built with these places and their inhabitants. Thanks to a deep shared understanding built between Berger and his subjects, the photographer breaks down the emotional distance between the photographer and the object of representation, presenting us with an intimate portrait of the Orient.
The purpose of the exhibition is to tell the story of a life and career beyond the ordinary. The many different themes shown represent Berger’s countless experiences and affect the viewer who takes away from it one coherent fil rouge: the search for intimacy between photographer and subject that Berger had already experimented with Guibert and that then becomes his own visual language and stylistic cipher. From the sensuality of his nudes and unmade beds, to his landscapes and portraits of the Orient, the power of these photographs lies in the artist’s ability to convey the soul of all his subjects, creating, without exception, powerful and poetic images of radically different subjects in far away lands. It is an extraordinary, probably unique, journey at the centre of great contemporary photography.
The exhibition is accompanied by the art book ‘Hans Georg Berger’, personally signed by the artist and rendered more precious by the addition of an original artwork. The book has been published as a limited edition by 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery in collaboration with the Lugano’s Museum of Cultures and contains accurate reproductions of seventy-five photographs – some of which never before seen – accompanied by texts and poetic material from the famous writers and figures who surrounded the life of the artist.
