«Postcards from Europe» ist ein Ausstellungsprojekt des zweiten Blicks. Die Fotografin Eva Leitolf rückt jene Orte in Europa und an den europäischen Aussengrenzen ins Bild, die von Flucht und Migration geprägt sind. Davon ist aber nicht viel zu sehen. Stattdessen zeigen sich grüne Wälder, trockene Wiesen und Küsten in goldenem Licht, oder von Menschen entleerte Strassen und Plätze. Erst, wenn der Blick auf den Stapel Postkarten fällt, der neben jeder Fotografie liegt, wird die jeweilige Szene textlich um das Wissen spezifischer Ereignisse ergänzt. Auf diese Weise kombiniert Leitolf dokumentarische und konzeptuelle Strategien. Was ist sichtbar und was wird der Vorstellung überlassen? «Postcards from Europe» ist ein Projekt, dass die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen visueller Repräsentation intelligent auslotet. Unweigerlich bringt uns Leitolf dazu, unseren ersten Eindruck der gezeigten Szene zu revidieren. Mit der Ausstellung im Kornhausforum Bern wird «Postcards from Europe» nun erstmals in grösserem Umfang in der Schweiz präsentiert.

"Postcards from Europe" est un projet d'exposition du deuxième regard. La photographe Eva Leitolf met en visuel les lieux d'Europe et des frontières extérieures de l'Europe qui sont marqués par la fuite et la migration. Mais on n'y voit pas grand-chose. Au lieu de cela, on voit des forêts vertes, des prairies sèches et des côtes dans une lumière dorée, ou des rues et des places vidées de leurs habitants. Ce n'est que lorsque le regard se pose sur la pile de cartes postales qui se trouve à côté de chaque photographie que la scène en question est complétée par un texte relatant des événements spécifiques. De cette manière, Leitolf combine des stratégies documentaires et conceptuelles. Qu'est-ce qui est visible et qu'est-ce qui est laissé à l'imagination ? "Postcards from Europe" est un projet qui explore intelligemment les possibilités et les limites de la représentation visuelle. Inévitablement, Leitolf nous amène à réviser notre première impression de la scène présentée. Avec l'exposition au Kornhausforum de Berne, "Postcards from Europe" est désormais présenté pour la première fois à grande échelle en Suisse.

"Cartoline dall'Europa" è un progetto espositivo del secondo sguardo. La fotografa Eva Leitolf mette in scena quei luoghi in Europa e ai confini esterni dell'Europa che sono segnati dalla fuga e dalla migrazione. Ma non c'è molto di tutto ciò da vedere. Invece, le foreste verdi, i prati secchi e le coste sono mostrati in una luce dorata, oppure le strade e le piazze si svuotano di persone. Solo quando si guarda la pila di cartoline che si trova accanto a ogni fotografia, la rispettiva scena viene integrata testualmente con la conoscenza di eventi specifici. In questo modo Leitolf combina strategie documentarie e concettuali. Cosa è visibile e cosa è lasciato all'immaginazione? "Postcards from Europe" è un progetto che esplora con intelligenza le possibilità e i limiti della rappresentazione visiva. Inevitabilmente, Leitolf ci fa rivedere la nostra prima impressione della scena esposta. Con la mostra al Kornhausforum di Berna, "Cartoline dall'Europa" viene presentata per la prima volta in Svizzera su scala più ampia.

"Postcards from Europe" is an exhibition project of the second glance. The photographer Eva Leitolf puts those places in Europe and at the European external borders into the picture that are marked by flight and migration. But there is not much of that to be seen. Instead, green forests, dry meadows and coasts are shown in golden light, or streets and squares emptied of people. Only when the viewer looks at the stack of postcards lying next to each photograph is the respective scene supplemented textually with knowledge of specific events. In this way Leitolf combines documentary and conceptual strategies. What is visible and what is left to the imagination? "Postcards from Europe" is a project that intelligently explores the possibilities and limits of visual representation. Inevitably, Leitolf leads us to revise our first impression of the scene on display. With the exhibition at the Kornhausforum Bern, "Postcards from Europe" is now presented for the first time on a larger scale in Switzerland.
