Es ist wieder ein einzigartiges Abenteuer, das uns zu dieser Ausstellung führt, die dem Fotografen Paul de Cordon (1908-1998) gewidmet ist.
Vor drei Jahren stellte mir mein Freund und Mitarbeiter Thomas Consani, ein anerkannter Silberschütze, bei den Rencontres d'Arles Pierre Elie de Pibrac vor, einen talentierten Fotografen, mit dem er auch zusammenarbeitet.
Einige Zeit später zeigte mir Pierre-Elie einige Aufnahmen seines Großvaters "Pachou", dessen Arbeit er ausstellen wollte.
Das war ein Schock für mich! Ich bin kein großer Freund von Zirkusfotografie, aber hier geht die Arbeit über die üblichen Bilder hinaus. Zunächst spürt man schnell die Verbindung zwischen den Artisten, dann die zu den Tieren, in einer Liebe und Komplizenschaft, die Respekt einflößt. Es stimmt, dass sich die Zeiten geändert haben und man diese Bilder heute nicht mehr machen könnte. Aber diese so kraftvollen Bilder versetzen uns in eine vergangene, liebenswerte, so kandide Zeit zurück.
Als wir über dieses Ausstellungsprojekt sprachen, erschien es mir interessant, die Karriere von Paul de Cordon in ihrer Gesamtheit zu betrachten. Ich war überrascht, als ich erfuhr, dass dieser Mann vor seinem Leben als Fotograf noch tausend andere Dinge erlebt hatte: Reiter, Militär, Regisseur und Stuntman - dieser Mann hatte wirklich eine ungewöhnliche Vergangenheit.
Es war ein großes Privileg für mich, völlig frei auf die Archive des Künstlers zugreifen zu können. Und obwohl er vor allem für seine Bilder vom Zirkus und Crazy Horse bekannt ist, war es mir wichtig, auch andere Facetten seines beeindruckenden Werks zu zeigen. Paul de Cordon war ein fantastischer Fotograf in allen Kategorien (sein erstes Modefoto machte er erst mit 51 Jahren).
Seine Akte sind von einer wunderbaren Sinnlichkeit, ohne einen Hauch von Vulgarität. Auf den Kontaktbühnen entdeckt man die Komplizenschaft mit seinen Modellen, das Lachen, das Wohlwollen, den gemeinsamen Drang zum gewünschten Foto, zur Schönheit. Seine Porträts und Modefotos spiegeln eine Epoche wider, die heute durch ihre Magie und Eleganz glänzt.
Er war ein talentierter Zeuge faszinierender Momente, auf die sein Enkel und ich mehr als stolz sind, um sie dem Pariser Publikum zu zeigen.
C’est encore une aventure singulière qui nous amène à cette exposition consacrée au photographe Paul de Cordon (1908-1998).
Il y a 3 ans, lors des Rencontres d’Arles, mon ami et collaborateur Thomas Consani tireur argentique reconnu me présenta Pierre Elie de Pibrac, photographe talentueux, avec qui il travaille également.
Quelques temps après, Pierre-Elie me fit découvrir quelques clichés de son grand-père «Pachou» dont il souhaitait exposer le travail.
Ce fut pour moi un choc ! Je ne suis guère amatrice de photographie de cirque, mais ici, le travail est au-delà des images habituelles. Tout d’abord on ressent rapidement le lien entre les artistes, puis celui avec les animaux, dans un amour et une complicité qui force le respect. Il est vrai que les temps ont changé, on ne pourrait de nos jours refaire ces photos. Mais ces images si puissantes nous renvoient à une époque révolue, attachante, si candide.
Et lorsque nous avons parlé de ce projet d’exposition, il m’a semblé intéressant de considérer la carrière de Paul de Cordon dans sa totalité. Quelle ne fût pas ma surprise d’apprendre qu’avant la vie de photographe, cet homme en avait connu mille autres : cavalier puis militaire, réalisateur et cascadeur, cet homme avait véritablement un passé hors du commun.
Ce fût pour moi un immense privilège de pouvoir accéder avec une totale liberté aux archives de l’artiste. Et bien qu’il soit surtout connu pour ses images de Cirque et du Crazy Horse, il m’a semblé important de montrer d’autres facettes de son oeuvre impressionnante. Paul de Cordon fut un formidable photographe, toutes catégories confondues (il ne prit sa première photo de mode qu’à 51 ans).
Ses nus sont d’une merveilleuse sensualité, sans une once de vulgarité. Sur les planches contact on découvre sa complicité avec ses modèles, les rires, la bienveillance, l’élan partagé vers la photo voulue, vers la beauté. Ses portraits et ses photos de mode reflètent quant à eux, une époque qui aujourd’hui, brille par sa magie et son élégance.
Il fut le talentueux témoin de moments fascinants que nous sommes plus que fiers, son petit-fils et moi, de faire découvrir au public parisien.

Tre anni fa, durante i Rencontres d'Arles, il mio amico e collaboratore Thomas Consani, noto stampatore d'argento, mi ha presentato Pierre Elie de Pibrac, un fotografo di talento con cui lavora anche.
Qualche tempo dopo, Pierre-Elie mi ha mostrato alcune foto di suo nonno "Pachou", di cui voleva esporre il lavoro.
È stato uno shock per me! Non sono un grande fan della fotografia circense, ma qui il lavoro va oltre le solite immagini. Innanzitutto, si percepisce subito il legame tra gli artisti, poi con gli animali, in un amore e una complicità che incutono rispetto. È vero che i tempi sono cambiati, non potremmo rifare queste foto al giorno d'oggi. Ma queste immagini potenti ci riportano a un'epoca passata, così accattivante, così candida.
Quando abbiamo parlato di questo progetto espositivo, ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante considerare la carriera di Paul de Cordon nella sua interezza. Mi ha sorpreso sapere che, prima della vita di fotografo, quest'uomo ne aveva conosciute mille altre: cavaliere, poi soldato, regista e stuntman, quest'uomo ha avuto un passato davvero straordinario.
È stato un grande privilegio per me poter accedere agli archivi dell'artista in piena libertà. E sebbene sia conosciuto soprattutto per le sue immagini del Circo e del Crazy Horse, ho ritenuto importante mostrare altri aspetti del suo impressionante lavoro. Paul de Cordon è stato un fotografo formidabile in tutte le categorie (ha scattato la sua prima foto di moda all'età di 51 anni).
I suoi nudi sono meravigliosamente sensuali, senza un briciolo di volgarità. Nei fogli a contatto scopriamo la complicità con le sue modelle, le risate, la benevolenza, l'impulso condiviso verso la foto desiderata, verso la bellezza. I suoi ritratti e le sue foto di moda riflettono un'epoca che oggi risplende di magia ed eleganza.
Era il testimone talentuoso di momenti affascinanti che suo nipote e io siamo più che orgogliosi di condividere con il pubblico parigino.
It is still a singular adventure that brings us to this exhibition dedicated to the photographer Paul de Cordon (1908-1998).
Three years ago, during the Rencontres d'Arles, my friend and collaborator Thomas Consani, a well-known silver printer, introduced me to Pierre Elie de Pibrac, a talented photographer with whom he also works.
Some time later, Pierre-Elie showed me some pictures of his grandfather "Pachou" whose work he wanted to exhibit.
It was a shock for me! I am not a big fan of circus photography, but here, the work is beyond the usual images. First of all, we quickly feel the link between the artists, then the one with the animals, in a love and complicity that forces respect. It is true that times have changed, we could not nowadays remake these photos. But these images are so powerful that they take us back to a bygone era, so endearing, so candid.
And when we talked about this exhibition project, I thought it would be interesting to consider Paul de Cordon's career in its entirety. What a surprise to learn that before the life of a photographer, this man had known a thousand other lives: horseman, then military, director and stuntman, this man had a truly extraordinary past.
It was a great privilege for me to be able to access the artist's archives with total freedom. And although he is best known for his images of the Circus and the Crazy Horse, I felt it was important to show other facets of his impressive work. Paul de Cordon was a wonderful photographer in all categories (he took his first fashion picture at the age of 51).
His nudes are of a wonderful sensuality, without an ounce of vulgarity. On the contact boards, we discover his complicity with his models, the laughter, the benevolence, the shared impulse towards the desired photo, towards beauty. His portraits and fashion photos reflect an era that today shines by its magic and elegance.
He was the talented witness of fascinating moments that we are more than proud, his grandson and I, to make discover to the Parisian public.
