Willy Maywald
Willy Maywald (1907-1985) war einer der wichtigsten Fotografen im Paris der 1930er bis 1960er Jahre. Seine Ausbildung in den Werkkunstschulen in Krefeld, Köln und Berlin prägten seine avantgardistische Formensprache. 1932 zog es ihn an die Seine, wo er mit vielen Protagonisten der künstlerischen Moderne Freundschaft schloss.
Sein Themenspektrum, das sowohl Auftragskunst wie freie Arbeiten umfasst, reicht von einer spektakulären Sammlung von Porträtfotografien über Modefotos für alle großen Pariser Couture-Häuser bis zu Tanz- und Architekturfotografie sowie Reise- und Städtereportagen.
Die in focus Galerie, Köln konzentriert sich auf Maywalds Modefotografien, die z.T. bislang noch nie gezeigt wurden. Willy Maywald fotografierte die erste Nachkriegskollektion von Christian Dior in Paris. Seine Lichtbilder gingen um die ganze Welt und machten den New Look berühmt. Es folgten Aufträge von Jacques Fath und anderen Haute Couture-Häusern. Die Ausstellung der in focus Galerie präsentiert seine Modefotografien in all ihren Facetten mit alten Vintage Prints. Willy Maywalds unverwechselbare Inszenierung von Haute Couture Mode finden sich in allen bedeutenden Abhandlungen zur Geschichte der Fotografie, doch von ihrem Schöpfer wissen nur »Spezialisten«.
Eine Retrospektive richtete das Museum Kleve aus, Einzelausstellungen gab es im Schlossmuseum Cagnes und im Palazzo Ducale Genua. Vertreten waren Maywald-Fotos auch in der Schau »Paris, Paris« im Centre Pompidou. Jenseits des Großen Teichs arrangierte das Fashion Institute of Technology 1982 die größte Maywald-Ausstellung mit 150 Aufnahmen. Seine Fotos waren von Sao Paulo bis Tokio überall zu sehen. Nach Maywalds Tod schlief das Interesse wieder ein – bis heute wartet der Maywaldsche Fotoschatz darauf, gehoben zu werden. Ein wichtiger Protagonist der Modefotografie ist neu- und wiederzuentdecken.
Willy Maywald (1907-1985) était l'un des photographes les plus importants du Paris des années 1930 à 1960. Sa formation dans les écoles d'arts appliqués de Krefeld, Cologne et Berlin a marqué son langage formel avant-gardiste. En 1932, il s'installe sur les bords de la Seine, où il se lie d'amitié avec de nombreux protagonistes de la modernité artistique.
Son éventail de sujets, qui comprend aussi bien des œuvres de commande que des travaux libres, va d'une spectaculaire collection de portraits à des photographies de mode pour toutes les grandes maisons de couture parisiennes, en passant par la photographie de danse et d'architecture ainsi que des reportages sur les voyages et les villes.
La galerie in focus de Cologne se concentre sur les photographies de mode de Maywald, dont certaines n'ont jamais été montrées jusqu'à présent. Willy Maywald a photographié la première collection d'après-guerre de Christian Dior à Paris. Ses photos ont fait le tour du monde et ont rendu célèbre le New Look. Suivirent des commandes de Jacques Fath et d'autres maisons de haute couture. L'exposition de la galerie in focus présente ses photographies de mode sous toutes leurs facettes avec d'anciens tirages vintage. La mise en scène incomparable de la mode haute couture par Willy Maywald figure dans tous les grands traités d'histoire de la photographie, mais seuls les "spécialistes" connaissent son créateur.
Une rétrospective a été organisée par le musée de Clèves, des expositions individuelles ont eu lieu au musée du château de Cagnes et au Palazzo Ducale de Gênes. Les photos de Maywald étaient également représentées dans l'exposition "Paris, Paris" au Centre Pompidou. De l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, le Fashion Institute of Technology a organisé en 1982 la plus grande exposition Maywald avec 150 photos. Ses photos ont été exposées partout, de Sao Paulo à Tokyo. Après la mort de Maywald, l'intérêt s'est à nouveau éteint - jusqu'à aujourd'hui, le trésor photographique de Maywald attend d'être mis en valeur. Un protagoniste important de la photographie de mode est à découvrir ou à redécouvrir.

Willy Maywald (1907-1985) was one of the most important photographers in Paris from the 1930s to the 1960s. His training at the Werkkunstschulen in Krefeld, Cologne and Berlin shaped his avant-garde formal language. In 1932 he moved to the Seine, where he made friends with many protagonists of artistic modernism.
His range of subjects, which includes both commissioned and free works, extends from a spectacular collection of portrait photographs and fashion photos for all the major Parisian couture houses to dance and architectural photography as well as travel and city reports.
The in focus gallery, Cologne focuses on Maywald's fashion photographs, some of which have never been shown before. Willy Maywald photographed the first post-war collection of Christian Dior in Paris. His photographs went around the world and made the New Look famous. Commissions from Jacques Fath and other haute couture houses followed. The exhibition of in focus Galerie presents his fashion photographs in all their facets with old vintage prints. Willy Maywald's distinctive staging of haute couture fashion can be found in all major treatises on the history of photography, but only "specialists" know of its creator.
