Sky Hopinka (1984) ist ein experimenteller Filmemacher, Fotograf und Dichter und gehört der Ho-Chunk Nation an, einem Native American Tribe in Wisconsin. Der Künstler stellt das Weitergeben von Geschichten, Traditionen und Kämpfen der amerikanischen Ureinwohner:innen in den Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit. Durch die Verflechtung von intimen Zeugnissen, Ausflügen auf dem Land der Vorfahren und Archivmaterial komponiert er lyrische und engagierte Chroniken, in denen die Grenze zwischen dem Persönlichen und dem Kollektiven verschwimmt. Landschaften, Texturen, Musik und Schrift bilden Schichten, aus denen ethnopoetische und neomythologische Beschwörungen hervorgehen, wie der Künstler sie gerne definiert.
Seine Ausstellung Our Ailing Senses in der Kunsthalle Friart zeigt Gedichten und Fotografien und eine grosse Auswahl an Filmen, die zwischen 2014 und 2023 entstanden sind. Die Begegnung der Sprache mit den Bildern der Erde eröffnet dort einen Raum von wiederherstellender Schönheit.
Sky Hopinka (1984) est un cinéaste expérimental, photographe et poète, membre de la Nation Ho-Chunk, une tribu amérindienne du Wisconsin. L’artiste inscrit la transmission des récits, traditions et luttes des peuples natifs d’Amériques au coeur de sa pratique. Entrelaçant témoignages intimes, dérives sur les terres ancestrales et documents d’archives, il compose des chroniques lyriques et engagées dans lesquelles la frontière entre le personnel et le collectif s’estompe. Paysages, textures, musiques, écriture forment autant de couches à partir desquelles émergent des évocations ethnopoétiques et néo-mythologiques, comme aime à les définir l’artiste.
Our Ailing Senses, son exposition à la Kunsthalle Friart, présente une large sélection de films, des poèmes et des photographies réalisés entre 2014 et 2023. La rencontre de la langue et des images de la terre y ouvre un espace d’une beauté qui restaure.
Sky Hopinka (1984) è un regista sperimentale, fotografo e poeta, membro della Ho-Chunk Nation, una tribù di nativi americani del Wisconsin. L'artista pone al centro del suo lavoro la trasmissione di storie, tradizioni e lotte dei nativi americani. Intrecciando testimonianze intime, escursioni nelle terre ancestrali e materiale d'archivio, compone cronache liriche e coinvolgenti che sfumano il confine tra personale e collettivo. Paesaggi, texture, musica e scrittura formano strati da cui emergono evocazioni etnopoetiche e neomitologiche, come ama definirle l'artista.
La sua mostra Our Ailing Senses alla Kunsthalle Friart presenta poesie e fotografie e un'ampia selezione di film realizzati tra il 2014 e il 2023. L'incontro tra il linguaggio e le immagini della terra apre uno spazio di bellezza ristoratrice.
Sky Hopinka (1984) is an experimental filmmaker, photographer and poet. He is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, a Native American Tribe from Wisconsin. The transmission of accounts, traditions and struggles of indigenous American peoples is at the heart of his work. Interweaving personal testimony, narratives on ancestral lands and archival material, he composes lyrical pieces in which a spiritual determination blurs the boundary between the individual and the collective. Landscapes, textures, music and writing all make up the different layers of a practice the artist refers to as ethnopoetic and neomythological.
Our Ailing Senses, his exhibition at the Kunsthalle Friart, presents poems, photos and a broad selection of films produced between 2014 and 2023, in which the encounter between language and images of the earth open onto a space of restorative beauty.
