Mitte der 1960er Jahre kam Walter Schels als junger Mann nach New York, wo er mehrere Jahre lebte und wohin er immer wieder zurückkehrte. Von der ersten Begegnung an faszinierten ihn die Lichter und Fassade der Stadt und die Ausblicke, die sich ihm dort boten. So entstanden atmosphärische, fast abstrakte Bilder, die so komplex und einzigartig sind wie New York selbst.
Für diese Ausstellung hat Walter Schels Schätze in seinem Archiv gehoben, ist in die Dunkelkammer gegangen, um manche Negative zum ersten Mal überhaupt zu vergrößern, und hat eine Auswahl seltener Vintage-Prints — größtenteils Unikate — getroffen.
"Mein Blick auf die Welt geht bis heute durch den rechteckigen Ausschnitt des Kamerasuchers. New York in seiner Buntheit war unerschöpflich. Die Kanaldeckel, aus denen es aus dem Untergrund dampfte, die Feuerleitern, deren Stahl im Sonnenlicht glitzerte, die protzigen Fassaden, die Sonntage im Central Park — ohne Kamera hätte ich das alles so nicht erlebt." Walter Schels, geb. 1936 in Landshut, arbeitete von 1957 bis 1965 als Schaufensterdekorateur in Barcelona, Kanada und Genf, bevor er nach New York ging, um Fotograf zu werden. 1970 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und wurde mit Charakterstudien von Künstlern, Politikern und Prominenten der Kunst- und Geisteswelt bekannt. Mit der gleichen Intensität porträtiert er seit Jahrzehnten Tiere und Blumen. Als leidenschaftlichem Erforscher der Physiognomie geht es Walter Schels darum, Wesen und Persönlichkeit eines Motivs in der Fotografie sichtbar zu machen.
In fotografischen Langzeitprojekten, etwa über Blinde, Menschen mit Behinderung, frühgeborene Kinder, Transsexuelle und Hospizpatienten kurze Zeit vor und unmittelbar nach ihrem Tod, widmet sich Schels Extremsituationen des menschlichen Lebens. Walter Schels erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, u.a. den Hansel-Mieth-Preis, den World Press Photo Award, eine Goldmedaille des Art Directors Club Deutschland sowie einen Lead Award. Walter Schels lebt und arbeitet seit 1990 in Hamburg. Er hat zahlreiche Bücher veröffentlicht, seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland gezeigt und sind Bestandteil vieler bedeutender Kunstsammlungen.
Au milieu des années 1960, Walter Schels est arrivé jeune à New York, où il a vécu plusieurs années et où il est toujours retourné. Dès leur première rencontre, les lumières et les façades de la ville ainsi que les vues qui s'y offraient à lui l'ont fasciné. Il a ainsi créé des visuels atmosphériques, presque abstraits, aussi complexes et uniques que New York elle-même.
Pour cette exposition, Walter Schels a puisé des trésors dans ses archives, s'est rendu dans la chambre noire pour agrandir certains négatifs pour la toute première fois, et a fait une sélection de tirages vintage rares - pour la plupart des pièces uniques.
"Mon regard sur le monde passe encore aujourd'hui par la découpe rectangulaire du viseur de l'appareil photo. New York, dans sa diversité de couleurs, était inépuisable. Les plaques d'égout d'où s'échappait la vapeur du sous-sol, les escaliers de secours dont l'acier scintillait au soleil, les façades ostentatoires, les dimanches à Central Park - sans appareil photo, je n'aurais pas vécu tout cela de cette manière". Walter Schels, né en 1936 à Landshut, a travaillé de 1957 à 1965 comme décorateur de vitrines à Barcelone, au Canada et à Genève, avant de partir à New York pour devenir photographe. En 1970, il retourne en Allemagne et se fait connaître par des études de caractère d'artistes, d'hommes politiques et de célébrités du monde artistique et intellectuel. Depuis des décennies, il réalise des portraits d'animaux et de fleurs avec la même intensité. Passionné par l'étude de la physionomie, Walter Schels s'attache à rendre visibles l'essence et la personnalité d'un sujet dans la photographie.
Dans ses projets photographiques à long terme, par exemple sur les aveugles, les personnes handicapées, les enfants prématurés, les transsexuels et les patients des hospices peu de temps avant et immédiatement après leur mort, Schels se consacre à des situations extrêmes de la vie humaine. Walter Schels a reçu de nombreuses distinctions, notamment le prix Hansel-Mieth, le World Press Photo Award, une médaille d'or de l'Art Directors Club Deutschland ainsi qu'un Lead Award. Walter Schels vit et travaille à Hambourg depuis 1990. Il a publié de nombreux livres, ses œuvres ont été présentées dans de nombreuses expositions en Allemagne et à l'étranger et font partie de nombreuses collections d'art importantes.
A metà degli anni Sessanta, Walter Schels giunse da giovane a New York, dove visse per diversi anni e dove tornò più volte. Fin dal suo primo incontro, rimase affascinato dalle luci e dalle facciate della città e dai panorami che gli offriva. Ne sono nati dipinti d'atmosfera, quasi astratti, complessi e unici come la stessa New York.
Per questa mostra, Walter Schels ha portato alla luce i tesori del suo archivio, è andato in camera oscura per ingrandire alcuni negativi per la prima volta e ha realizzato una selezione di rare stampe d'epoca, molte delle quali uniche.
"La mia visione del mondo è ancora oggi attraverso la sezione rettangolare del mirino della macchina fotografica. New York, con i suoi colori, era inesauribile. I tombini fumanti dal sottosuolo, le scale antincendio il cui acciaio scintillava alla luce del sole, le facciate sontuose, le domeniche a Central Park: senza una macchina fotografica non avrei vissuto tutto questo". Walter Schels, nato a Landshut nel 1936, ha lavorato come vetrinista a Barcellona, in Canada e a Ginevra dal 1957 al 1965 prima di trasferirsi a New York per diventare fotografo. Nel 1970 è tornato in Germania ed è diventato famoso per gli studi sui personaggi di artisti, politici e celebrità del mondo artistico e intellettuale. Da decenni ritrae animali e fiori con la stessa intensità. Come appassionato ricercatore di fisiognomica, Walter Schels si preoccupa di rendere visibile in fotografia l'essenza e la personalità di un soggetto.
In progetti fotografici a lungo termine, ad esempio su persone cieche, disabili, bambini nati prematuramente, transessuali e pazienti di ospizi poco prima e subito dopo la loro morte, Schels si dedica a situazioni estreme della vita umana. Walter Schels ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il Premio Hansel-Mieth, il World Press Photo Award, una medaglia d'oro dell'Art Directors Club Germany e un Lead Award. Walter Schels vive e lavora ad Amburgo dal 1990. Ha pubblicato numerosi libri, le sue opere sono state esposte in numerose mostre in patria e all'estero e fanno parte di molte importanti collezioni d'arte.
In the mid-1960s, Walter Schels, as a young man, came to New York, where he lived for several years and to which he returned again and again. He was immediately fascinated by the lights and facades of the city and the views that were offered to him there. This resulted in atmospheric, almost abstract images that are as complex and unique as New York itself.
For this exhibition, Walter Schels has unearthed treasures in his archive, gone into the darkroom to enlarge some negatives for the first time, and made a selection of rare vintage prints, most of them unique.
“I still look at the world through the camera’s rectangular viewfinder. New York back then was inexhaustible in its colors. The steam seeping out of manhole covers, the fire escapes, the steel glittering in the sunlight, the ostentatious facades, the sunny days in Central Park—without a camera, all of this would have passed me by.“ Walter Schels
Walter Schels, born in 1936 in Landshut, southern Germany, worked from 1957 to 1965 as a window dresser in Barcelona, Canada and Geneva before moving to New York to become a photographer. In 1970 he returned to Germany and became known for his character studies of artists, politicians and famous names from the world of arts and letters. For decades he has portrayed animals and flowers with the same intensity.
In various long-term photographic series, on blind people, the disabled, prematurely-born children and transsexuals, for instance, Schels has pursued exceptional situations in human life. He has received many awards for his series depicting hospice patients shortly before and shortly after their death, including the Hansel Mieth Prize, the World Press Photo Award, a gold medal from the Art Directors Club, Germany, and a Lead Award.
Walter Schels has lived and worked since 1990 in Hamburg. He has published various books and his works have been shown in countless exhibitions in Germany and worldwide and are part of many major art collections.
