Iwan Baan gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Fotografen für Architektur und die gebaute Welt. In eindrücklichen Bildern dokumentiert er das Wachsen globaler Megacities ebenso wie traditionelle oder informelle Bauten und die Werke bekannter zeitgenössischer ArchitektInnen, darunter Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Kazuyo Sejima und Tatiana Bilbao. Von Oktober 2023 bis März 2024 widmet das Vitra Design Museum dem niederländischen Fotografen die erste umfassende Retrospektive. Die Ausstellung »Iwan Baan. Momente der Architektur« zeigt mit dem breit angelegten Werk des Fotografen ein Panorama der Architektur des frühen 21. Jahrhunderts in ihren urbanen und sozialen Zusammenhängen, und die Menschen, die darin leben.
Über die letzten 30 Jahre hat die rasante Verbreitung der digitalen Medien die Welt der Fotografie und Architektur von Grund auf verändert. Bilder neuer Gebäude werden heute in Echtzeit übermittelt, begleiten den Aufstieg von ArchitektInnen, beeinflussen den gestalterischen Prozess und machen Architektur – zumindest visuell – jederzeit und überall verfügbar. Kaum ein anderer Fotograf hat diese Entwicklung so stark geprägt wie Iwan Baan. Seine Arbeitsweise ist schnell und präzise und er schafft Bilder, die zugleich prägnant, poetisch und menschlich wirken. Baan weiß Gebäude perfekt ins Bild zu setzen, fängt aber auch die Momente ein, in denen Architektur lebendig wird, wenn die Bauarbeiter eine Pause machen, wenn Menschen ein- oder ausziehen. Viele ikonische Bilder der letzten 20 Jahre – von den »offiziellen« Porträts architektonischer Wahrzeichen bis hin zu Fotos eines durch den Wirbelsturm Sandy ins Dunkel getauchten Manhattan – entstanden durch Baans dokumentarischen Blick.
Die Ausstellung zeigt Beispiele aus allen Bereichen von Baans Schaffen seit den frühen 2000er Jahren, darunter auch Filmmaterial und wenig bekannte Bilder informeller Bauten, vom chinesischen Runddorf bis zur äthiopischen Felsenkirche, von im Eigenbau entstandenen Etagenhäusern in Kairo bis hin zum Torre de David in Caracas. »Wichtig ist das Erzählen«, sagt Iwan Baan. »Und das ist sehr intuitiv und fließend. Mir geht es weniger um zeitlose Bilder großer Architektur als um den spezifischen Zeitpunkt, um den Ort und die Menschen dort – all die unvorhergesehenen, unplanbaren Momente an und um einen Ort, wie die Menschen dort leben und welche Geschichten dadurch erzählt werden.«
Iwan Baan est considéré comme l'un des plus grands photographes d'architecture et du monde construit. Dans des visuels impressionnants, il documente la croissance des mégapoles mondiales ainsi que les constructions traditionnelles ou informelles et les œuvres d'architectes contemporains connus, dont Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Kazuyo Sejima et Tatiana Bilbao. D'octobre 2023 à mars 2024, le Vitra Design Museum consacrera au photographe néerlandais sa première rétrospective complète. L'exposition "Iwan Baan. Moments d'architecture" présente, à travers le vaste travail du photographe, un panorama de l'architecture du début du 21e siècle dans ses contextes urbains et sociaux, ainsi que les personnes qui y vivent.
Au cours des trente dernières années, la diffusion rapide des médias numériques a radicalement changé le monde de la photographie et de l'architecture. Les images de nouveaux bâtiments sont aujourd'hui transmises en temps réel, accompagnent l'ascension des architectes, influencent le processus de création et rendent l'architecture - du moins visuellement - disponible à tout moment et en tout lieu. Peu de photographes ont autant marqué cette évolution qu'Iwan Baan. Sa méthode de travail est rapide et précise et il crée des visuels qui semblent à la fois concis, poétiques et humains. Baan sait parfaitement mettre en valeur les bâtiments, mais il capture également les moments où l'architecture prend vie, lorsque les ouvriers font une pause, lorsque les gens emménagent ou déménagent. De nombreux visuels iconiques des 20 dernières années - des portraits "officiels" de symboles architecturaux aux photos d'un Manhattan plongé dans l'obscurité par l'ouragan Sandy - ont été réalisés grâce au regard documentaire de Baan.
L'exposition présente des exemples de tous les domaines de l'œuvre de Baan depuis le début des années 2000, y compris du matériel cinématographique et des visuels peu connus de constructions informelles, du village rond chinois à l'église rupestre éthiopienne, des maisons à étages construites en auto-construction au Caire à la Torre de David à Caracas. "L'important, c'est de raconter", explique Iwan Baan. "Et c'est très intuitif et fluide. Ce qui m'intéresse, ce ne sont pas tant les visuels intemporels de la grande architecture que le moment spécifique, le lieu et les gens qui s'y trouvent - tous les moments imprévus et imprévisibles dans et autour d'un lieu, comment les gens y vivent et quelles histoires sont ainsi racontées."

Molte immagini iconiche degli ultimi 20 anni - dai ritratti "ufficiali" dei monumenti architettonici alle foto di una Manhattan sprofondata nell'oscurità dall'uragano Sandy - sono state create grazie all'occhio documentaristico di Baan.
La mostra presenta esempi di tutte le aree di lavoro di Baan dall'inizio degli anni 2000, compresi filmati e immagini poco conosciute di edifici informali, dai villaggi rotondi cinesi alle chiese rupestri etiopi, dalle case multipiano autocostruite al Cairo alla Torre de David di Caracas. "L'importante è la narrazione", dice Iwan Baan. "Ed è molto intuitiva e fluida. Non mi interessano tanto le immagini senza tempo di grandi architetture quanto il momento specifico, il luogo e le persone che vi abitano - tutti i momenti imprevisti e non pianificabili all'interno e intorno a un luogo, il modo in cui la gente ci vive e le storie che vengono raccontate attraverso di esso".

In impressive visuals, he documents the growth of global megacities as well as traditional or informal buildings and the works of well-known contemporary architects, including Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Kazuyo Sejima and Tatiana Bilbao. From October 2023 to March 2024, the Vitra Design Museum will dedicate the first comprehensive retrospective to the Dutch photographer. The exhibition "Iwan Baan. Moments of Architecture" presents a panorama of early 21st-century architecture in its urban and social contexts, and the people who live in it, through the photographer's wide-ranging oeuvre.
Over the past 30 years, the rapid proliferation of digital media has fundamentally changed the world of photography and architecture. Today, visuals of new buildings are transmitted in real time, accompany the rise of architects, influence the design process, and make architecture - at least visually - available anytime and anywhere. Hardly any other photographer has influenced this development as much as Iwan Baan. His working method is fast and precise, and he creates visuals that are at once concise, poetic, and human. Baan knows how to put buildings perfectly in the visual, but also captures the moments when architecture comes alive, when construction workers take a break, when people move in or out. Many iconic visuals of the past 20 years-from "official" portraits of architectural landmarks to photos of a Manhattan plunged into darkness by Hurricane Sandy-were created through Baan's documentary eye.
The exhibition features examples from across Baan's body of work since the early 2000s, including film footage and little-known visuals of informal buildings, from Chinese round villages to Ethiopian rock-hewn churches, from self-built bunkhouses in Cairo to the Torre de David in Caracas. "What's important is the storytelling," says Iwan Baan. "And it's very intuitive and fluid. I'm less concerned with timeless visuals of great architecture than with the specific moment, the place and the people there - all the unforeseen, unplannable moments in and around a place, how people live there, and what stories are told through it."
