Drei Jahre lang fotografierte Milena Schilling 45 Menschen aus Konstanz nackt im Bodensee. Menschen aller Körperformen und Hintergründe im Alter von 18 bis 73 Jahren tauchten vor ihrer Kamera ab.
Der Antrieb zu dieser Fotoserie entspringt einer atemberaubenden Begegnung mit der Natur im offenen Meer und der Erkenntnis: Bestehen wir zwar selbst aus 60–70 % Wasser, bleibt uns dieses Element doch unzähmbar überlegen und zugleich lebensnotwendig. Obwohl 71 % der Erdoberfläche von Wasser bedeckt sind, kann der Mensch darin nicht leben. In der scheinbar unendlichen blauen Weite zu schwimmen, prägte die Fotografin tief und wurde der Beginn einer fotografischen Reise zum Wasser als Ursprungselement allen Lebens: O R I G I O.
Für das daraus entstehende Projekt entwickelte die junge Fotografin ein präzises Konzept und sprang damit schließlich erneut buchstäblich ins kalte Wasser – diesmal vor der eigenen Haustür in den Bodensee. Zunächst suchte sie Unterwasserspots in Ufernähe, weitete ihre Ortswahl jedoch rasch aus und entschloss sich schließlich, einen Segelschein zu machen. So brachte sie ihre Gruppe mit dem Segelboot ins tiefere Wasser, um die geplanten Szenerien unter der Oberfläche zu formieren.
Jede Komposition reifte in der Theorie, wurde an Land geprobt und schließlich im Wasser modelliert und fotografisch eingefangen. Doch dabei spielte die Natur regelmäßig all ihre Willkür aus: Wassertemperatur, Windstärke, Witterungsverhältnisse der Vortage, Pflanzen – nichts war planbar, verlässlich oder gar wiederholbar. Erst bei Wassertemperaturen unterhalb von 12 Grad war eine klare Sicht möglich. Die Tauchenden konnten deshalb nur wenige Minuten im kalten Bodensee verharren, und die Fotografin konnte pro Tauchgang nur eine einzige Aufnahme auslösen. Erst später am Bildschirm zeigte sich die Qualität der Bilder, die dem Projekt seine analogähnliche Echtheit verleihen. Entstanden ist ein uns gleichermaßen alltäglicher und in dieser Form doch unbekannter, malerischer Blick auf eine Welt im nassen Element.
Die mystische Ästhetik der Bilder wurde inspiriert von Gemälden und Skulpturen der Renaissance. Die Trübungen des Sees und das sanfte Licht des bewölkten Himmels erzeugen einen zeitlosen Charakter der Fotografien und wecken Erinnerungen an unseren Ursprung: Jedes menschliche Leben wächst umschlossen von Fruchtwasser heran. Beinahe schwerelos, frei von Besitztümern, getragen von einem Element, das keine Grenzen, Sprachbarrieren oder Hierarchien kennt.
Milena Schillings Fotografien öffnen unseren Blick und nähren unsere Sehnsucht nach ursprünglicher Verbundenheit – sowohl mit unserer eigenen Spezies als auch mit dem Wasser, das unseren Lebensraum von allen anderen bekannten Planeten unterscheidet. Die Serie zeigt auch, wie vielfältig schön der menschliche Körper ist.
Und das Werk O R I G I O steht erst am Anfang: Derzeit bereitet sich Milena Schilling darauf vor, eines Tages zu den gigantischen Meeressäugern zu segeln, um Wale im respektvollen Wechselspiel mit dem puren, winzigen Menschen zu fotografieren. O R I G I O ist eine Hommage an das Leben, daran, wie facettenreich und von Schönheit erfüllt es ist. Ein demütiger Blick auf das Element Wasser, dem wir Menschen alle gleichermaßen unsere Existenz auf der Erde verdanken, sowie eine Erinnerung daran, dass wir alle aus dem gleichen Wasser geformt sind und darüber miteinander verbunden.

Pendant trois ans, Milena Schilling a photographié 45 personnes de Constance nues dans le lac de Constance. Des personnes de toutes les morphologies et de tous les horizons, âgées de 18 à 73 ans, ont plongé devant son appareil photo.
L'impulsion pour cette série de photos provient d'une rencontre époustouflante avec la nature en pleine mer et de la prise de conscience suivante : si nous sommes nous-mêmes composés de 60 à 70 % d'eau, cet élément nous est à la fois indomptablement supérieur et indispensable à la vie. Bien que 71 % de la surface de la Terre soit recouverte d'eau, l'homme ne peut pas y vivre. Nager dans cette étendue bleue apparemment infinie a profondément marqué la photographe et a été le début d'un voyage photographique vers l'eau en tant qu'élément d'origine de toute vie : O R I G I O.
La jeune photographe a développé un concept précis pour le projet qui en a résulté et s'est littéralement jetée à l'eau, cette fois devant sa porte, dans le lac de Constance. Elle a d'abord cherché des spots sous-marins près de la rive, mais a rapidement élargi son choix de lieu et a finalement décidé de passer un brevet de voile. Elle a donc emmené son groupe en voilier dans les eaux plus profondes pour former les décors prévus sous la surface.
Chaque composition a mûri en théorie, a été répétée sur la terre ferme et a finalement été modelée et photographiée dans l'eau. Mais la nature a régulièrement fait preuve d'arbitraire : La température de l'eau, la force du vent, les conditions météorologiques des jours précédents, les plantes - rien ne pouvait être planifié, fiable ou même répété. Ce n'est que lorsque la température de l'eau était inférieure à 12 degrés qu'une vision claire était possible. Les plongeurs ne pouvaient donc rester que quelques minutes dans le lac de Constance froid, et la photographe ne pouvait déclencher qu'une seule prise de vue par plongée. Ce n'est que plus tard, sur l'écran, que la qualité des images s'est révélée, conférant au projet une authenticité proche de l'analogique. Il en résulte une vision picturale d'un monde dans l'élément humide qui nous est à la fois familier et inconnu sous cette forme.
L'esthétique mystique des images s'inspire des peintures et des sculptures de la Renaissance. La turbidité du lac et la douce lumière du ciel nuageux créent un caractère intemporel des photographies et évoquent des souvenirs de nos origines : toute vie humaine grandit entourée de liquide amniotique. Presque en apesanteur, libre de toute possession, portée par un élément qui ne connaît ni frontières, ni barrières linguistiques, ni hiérarchies.
Les photographies de Milena Schilling ouvrent notre regard et nourrissent notre désir de lien originel - tant avec notre propre espèce qu'avec l'eau, qui distingue notre espace vital de toutes les autres planètes connues. La série montre également à quel point le corps humain est d'une beauté variée.
Et l'œuvre O R I G I O n'en est qu'à ses débuts : actuellement, Milena Schilling se prépare à naviguer un jour vers les gigantesques mammifères marins afin de photographier les baleines dans une interaction respectueuse avec le pur et minuscule être humain. O R I G I O est un hommage à la vie, à ses multiples facettes et à sa beauté. Un regard humble sur l'élément eau, auquel nous devons tous notre existence sur terre, et un rappel que nous sommes tous formés de la même eau et reliés par elle.

Per tre anni, Milena Schilling ha fotografato 45 persone di Costanza nude nel lago di Costanza. Persone di ogni corporatura e provenienza, di età compresa tra i 18 e i 73 anni, si sono tuffate davanti alla sua macchina fotografica.
L'impulso per questa serie fotografica è nato da un incontro mozzafiato con la natura in mare aperto e dalla consapevolezza che, sebbene noi stessi siamo costituiti per il 60-70% da acqua, questo elemento rimane indomito e superiore a noi e allo stesso tempo vitale. Sebbene il 71% della superficie terrestre sia coperto dall'acqua, l'uomo non può viverci dentro. Nuotare in quella distesa blu apparentemente infinita ha colpito profondamente il fotografo ed è stato l'inizio di un viaggio fotografico verso l'acqua come elemento originario di tutta la vita: l'O R I G I O.
La giovane fotografa ha sviluppato un concetto preciso per il progetto che ne è scaturito e poi si è letteralmente rituffata nell'acqua, questa volta nel lago di Costanza, sulla soglia di casa sua. Inizialmente ha cercato luoghi subacquei vicino alla riva, ma ha rapidamente ampliato la scelta dei luoghi e ha infine deciso di prendere la patente nautica. Così ha portato il suo gruppo in barca a vela in acque più profonde per realizzare le scene previste sotto la superficie.
Ogni composizione è maturata in teoria, è stata provata a terra e infine modellata in acqua e catturata fotograficamente. Tuttavia, la natura ha regolarmente messo in atto tutta la sua arbitrarietà: La temperatura dell'acqua, la forza del vento, le condizioni meteorologiche dei giorni precedenti, le piante... nulla poteva essere pianificato, né affidato, né tantomeno ripetuto. La visibilità era possibile solo quando la temperatura dell'acqua era inferiore a 12 gradi. I subacquei hanno quindi potuto rimanere nel freddo lago di Costanza solo per pochi minuti e il fotografo ha potuto scattare solo una foto per immersione. La qualità delle immagini, che conferisce al progetto un'autenticità analogica, è emersa solo successivamente sullo schermo. Il risultato è una visione pittoresca di un mondo bagnato, quotidiano e allo stesso tempo sconosciuto in questa forma.
L'estetica mistica delle immagini è stata ispirata da dipinti e sculture rinascimentali. La torbidità del lago e la luce soffusa del cielo nuvoloso creano un carattere senza tempo nelle fotografie ed evocano ricordi delle nostre origini: ogni vita umana cresce circondata dal liquido amniotico. Quasi senza peso, priva di beni, trasportata da un elemento che non conosce confini, barriere linguistiche o gerarchie.
Le fotografie di Milena Schilling ci aprono gli occhi e alimentano il nostro desiderio di una connessione primordiale, sia con la nostra specie che con l'acqua che distingue il nostro habitat da tutti gli altri pianeti conosciuti. La serie mostra anche quanto sia vario e bello il corpo umano.
E il lavoro di O R I G I O è solo all'inizio: Milena Schilling si sta preparando a navigare un giorno verso i giganteschi mammiferi marini per fotografare le balene in un'interazione rispettosa con i puri, minuscoli esseri umani. O R I G I O è un omaggio alla vita, a quanto sia sfaccettata e piena di bellezza. Uno sguardo umile sull'elemento dell'acqua, a cui tutti noi esseri umani dobbiamo in egual misura la nostra esistenza sulla terra, nonché un promemoria del fatto che siamo tutti formati dalla stessa acqua e collegati gli uni agli altri attraverso di essa.

For three years, Milena Schilling photographed 45 naked people from Konstanz in Lake Constance. People of all body types and backgrounds, aged 18 to 73, submerged in front of her camera.
The impetus for this photo series arose from a breathtaking encounter with nature in the open sea and the realisation that although we ourselves consist of 60–70% water, this element remains both indomitably superior to us and, at the same time, essential to life. Although 71% of the earth's surface is covered by water, humans cannot live in it. Swimming in the seemingly endless blue expanse had a profound effect on the photographer and became the beginning of a photographic journey to the water as the original element of all life: O R I G I O.
For the resulting project, the young photographer developed a precise concept and finally literally jumped into the cold water again – this time in Lake Constance, right on her doorstep. Initially, she looked for underwater spots near the shore, but she quickly expanded her choice of location and finally decided to get her sailing licence. She took her group out in the deeper water in the sailing boat to form the planned scenes under the surface.
Each composition was developed in theory, rehearsed on land and then modelled and photographed in the water. However, nature regularly played out all its whims: water temperature, wind strength, weather conditions of the previous days, plants – nothing could be planned, relied on or even repeated. Visibility was only good at water temperatures below 12 degrees. The divers could therefore only remain in the cold Lake Constance for a few minutes, and the photographer could only take a single shot per dive. The quality of the images, which give the project its analogue-like authenticity, only became apparent on the screen later. The result is a view of a world in the wet element that is both mundane and yet unknown in this form, and picturesque.
The mystical aesthetic of the images was inspired by paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance. The murkiness of the lake and the soft light of the cloudy sky create a timeless character in the photographs and evoke memories of our origins: every human life begins enclosed in amniotic fluid. Almost weightless, free of possessions, carried by an element that knows no borders, language barriers or hierarchies.
Milena Schilling's photographs open our eyes and nourish our longing for a primordial connection – both with our own species and with the water that distinguishes our habitat from all other known planets. The series also shows the diverse beauty of the human body.
And the O R I G I O project is just beginning: Milena Schilling is currently preparing to one day sail to the gigantic marine mammals to photograph whales in respectful interaction with the pure, tiny human. O R I G I O is a tribute to life, to how multifaceted and full of beauty it is. A humble look at the element of water, to which we all owe our existence on earth, and a reminder that we are all made of the same water and are connected through it.
