Das Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) freut sich, die erste große Einzelausstellung des katalanischen Künstlers Aleix Plademunt in der Schweiz zu präsentieren. Das über fast ein Jahrzehnt entwickelte Werk Matter [Materie] ist die bislang ehrgeizigste Arbeit des Künstlers. Ausgangspunkt ist das Wort "Materie", das vom lateinischen Wort "mater" (Mutter) abgeleitet ist und die Substanz bezeichnet, aus der alles besteht. Mit Matter untersucht der Künstler die Frage der Existenz und begibt sich auf die Suche nach unseren Ursprüngen. Er arbeitete mit wissenschaftlichen Teams aus mehr als 15 Ländern weltweit zusammen, darunter auch aus der Schweiz. Aus diesen Begegnungen hat er einen Korpus von über 600 Fotografien erstellt. Jedes Bild ist ein Hinweis auf das Paradoxon der Materie: Sie ist konstant und träge, macht aber das Leben und seine ständigen Veränderungen möglich. Matter berichtet über die Art und Weise, wie die Materie von Geschichte und Politik, aber auch von Geologie, Biologie und Klima und ihren langsamen oder abrupten Veränderungen durchdrungen wird. Die Bilder bilden ein heterogenes und doch präzises und kohärentes Ensemble von akuter Schönheit.
Nach einer ersten monografischen Ausstellung, die diesem Projekt gewidmet war (Sala Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, 2022), freut sich das Centre de la photographie Genève, die erste Institution außerhalb Spaniens zu sein, die Matter eine Einzelausstellung widmet. Sie wird 154 Bilder aus dem Korpus in einer Szenografie präsentieren, die der Künstler in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kuratorenteam des CPG für die Räume des CPG entworfen hat.
Le Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) se réjouit de présenter la première exposition personnelle d’envergure en Suisse de l’artiste catalan Aleix Plademunt. Développé sur près d’une décennie, Matter [Matière] est le travail le plus ambitieux à ce jour de l’artiste. Il prend pour point de départ le mot « matière », dérivé de mater, soit « mère » en latin, qui désigne la substance dont est faite toute chose. Avec Matter, l’artiste investigue la question de l’existence et se lance à la poursuite de nos origines. Il a collaboré avec les équipes scientifiques de plus de 15 pays à travers le monde, dont la Suisse. À partir de ces rencontres, il a produit un corpus de plus de 600 photographies. Chaque image est un indice sur le paradoxe de la matière : elle est constante et inerte, mais rend la vie et ses perpétuels changements possibles. Matter rend compte des manières dont la matière est traversée par l’histoire et la politique, mais aussi la géologie, la biologie, le climat et leurs lentes ou brutales évolutions. Les images forment un ensemble hétéroclite et pourtant précis et cohérent, d’une beauté aiguë.
Après une première exposition monographique dédiée à ce projet (Sala Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, 2022), le Centre de la photographie Genève se réjouit d’être la première institution hors d’Espagne à dédier une exposition solo à Matter. Elle présentera 154 images du corpus dans une scénographique conçue pour les espaces du CPG par l’artiste en collaboration avec l’équipe curatoriale du CPG.
Il Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) è lieto di presentare la prima grande mostra personale in Svizzera dell'artista catalano Aleix Plademunt. Sviluppata nell'arco di quasi un decennio, Matter è l'opera più ambiziosa dell'artista. Prende spunto dalla parola "materia", derivata da mater, che in latino significa "madre", e che si riferisce alla sostanza di cui tutto è fatto. Con Matter, l'artista indaga la questione dell'esistenza e parte alla ricerca delle nostre origini. Ha collaborato con team scientifici in oltre 15 Paesi del mondo, tra cui la Svizzera. Da questi incontri è nato un corpus di oltre 600 fotografie. Ogni immagine è un indizio del paradosso della materia: è costante e inerte, ma rende possibile la vita e i suoi perpetui cambiamenti. Matter cattura i modi in cui la materia è plasmata dalla storia e dalla politica, ma anche dalla geologia, dalla biologia e dal clima, e i loro cambiamenti lenti o improvvisi. Le immagini formano un insieme eterogeneo ma preciso e coerente, di acuta bellezza.
Dopo una prima mostra monografica dedicata a questo progetto (Sala Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, 2022), il Centre de la photographie Genève è lieto di essere la prima istituzione al di fuori della Spagna a dedicare una mostra personale a Matter. La mostra presenterà 154 immagini del corpus in una scenografia progettata per gli spazi del CPG dall'artista in collaborazione con il team curatoriale del CPG.
The Centre de la photographie Genève (CPG) is delighted to present the first major solo exhibition in Switzerland by the Catalan artist Aleix Plademunt. Developed over almost a decade, it takes as its starting point the word matter, which stems from mater, the Latin word for mother. Matter refers to any substance with a physical existence. For this project, Aleix Plademunt collaborated with scientific teams from more than 15 countries, including Switzerland, engaged in the study of matter in a multitude of forms. At the junction of the living and the inert, they investigate the particles that make up the fabric of the universe, geologic eons and eras, vanished civilizations and their relics, human anatomy and its robotic or artistic reproductions, among many other fields. Matter is constant, inert and indifferent, and yet it makes life possible. Humans, in response, shape it and study it relentlessly, but we have yet to succeed in unravelling the fundamental mysteries of life. By combining photographs from multiple contexts across the world, the artist offers us a singular and complex tale about the human condition, through the lenses of history, biology, physics and geography. He bears witness to human ingenuity, curiosity and creativity, as well as to its violence and its longing for power and control. His photographs weave together the documentary and the intimate, forming an equally personal and political narrative, incisive and acutely beautiful.
Following a first solo exhibition dedicated to this project (Sala Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, 2022), the Centre de la photographie Genève is delighted to be the first institution outside Spain to dedicate a solo exhibition to Matter. It will present 154 images from the corpus in a scenography designed for the CPG’s spaces by the artist in collaboration with the CPG’s curatorial team.
