Gregor Schmoll. Puparium: Atelier/Studio

Im Januar 1945 trafen sich der Künstler-Architekt Friedrich Kiesler (1890 – 1965) und der Fotograf Percy Rainford (1901 – 1976) mit dem Künstler Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968) in dessen New Yorker Atelier, um Aufnahmen des Raums sowie Portraits für eine Fotocollage anzufertigen. Rainford nahm nach Kieslers und Duchamps Anleitung den Atelierraum aus ungewöhnlichen Kamerawinkeln auf. Kiesler montierte diese Bilder in weiterer Folge zu einem ausfaltbaren Fototriptychon – Les Larves d’Imagie d’Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp – für das Kunstmagazin View (Nr. 1, März 1945), das Marcel Duchamp gewidmet war.
Die Originalabzüge befinden sich heute im Archiv der Friedrich Kiesler Stiftung und bilden den Ausgangspunkt für Gregor Schmolls neue Arbeit Puparium: Atelier/Studio. Schmoll paraphrasiert darin die fotografische Dokumentation wie auch die Fotodokumente selbst zwischen objektiver Nüchternheit und hymnischer Verklärung. Durch das spielerische Reenactment dekonstruiert er die Annahme, dass Fotografie die „Wirklichkeit“ abbildgetreu festhält und entlarvt die „Legendenbildung“ bzw. Konstruktion des Atelierraums als geheimnisumwitterten Ort künstlerischen Schaffens.

En janvier 1945, l'artiste-architecte Friedrich Kiesler (1890 - 1965) et le photographe Percy Rainford (1901 - 1976) ont rencontré l'artiste Marcel Duchamp (1887 - 1968) dans son atelier new-yorkais afin de prendre des photos de la pièce ainsi que des portraits pour un collage photographique. Suivant les instructions de Kiesler et de Duchamp, Rainford a photographié l'espace de l'atelier sous des angles inhabituels. Kiesler a ensuite assemblé ces visuels en un triptyque photographique dépliable - Les Larves d'Imagie d'Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp - pour le magazine artistique View (n° 1, mars 1945), consacré à Marcel Duchamp.
Les tirages originaux se trouvent aujourd'hui dans les archives de la Friedrich Kiesler Stiftung et constituent le point de départ de la nouvelle œuvre de Gregor Schmoll, Puparium : Atelier/Studio. Schmoll y paraphrase la documentation photographique ainsi que les documents photographiques eux-mêmes, entre sobriété objective et transfiguration hymnique. Par le biais d'une reconstitution ludique, il déconstruit l'hypothèse selon laquelle la photographie fixe la "réalité" de manière fidèle à l'image et démasque la "création de légendes" ou la construction de l'espace de l'atelier comme lieu de création artistique entouré de mystère.

Nel gennaio 1945, l'artista-architetto Frederick Kiesler (1890-1965) e il fotografo Percy Rainford (1901-1976) si incontrarono con l'artista Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) nello studio newyorkese di Duchamp per fotografare lo spazio e i ritratti per un collage fotografico. Rainford, seguendo le istruzioni di Kiesler e Duchamp, ha ripreso lo spazio dello studio da angolazioni insolite. Kiesler assemblò successivamente queste immagini in un trittico fotografico pieghevole - Les Larves d'Imagie d'Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp - per la rivista d'arte View (n. 1, marzo 1945), dedicata a Marcel Duchamp.
Le stampe originali sono oggi conservate nell'archivio della Fondazione Friedrich Kiesler e costituiscono il punto di partenza della nuova opera di Gregor Schmoll, Puparium: Atelier/Studio. In questo lavoro, Schmoll parafrasa la documentazione fotografica e i documenti fotografici stessi tra sobrietà oggettiva e trasfigurazione innografica. Attraverso una giocosa rievocazione, egli decostruisce il presupposto che la fotografia catturi fedelmente la "realtà" ed espone la "creazione di leggende" o la costruzione dello spazio dello studio come luogo di creazione artistica avvolto nel mistero.

In January 1945, the artist-architect Frederick Kiesler (1890 – 1965) and the photographer Percy Rainford (1901 – 1976) met the artist Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968) in Duchamp’s New York studio in order to take pictures of the space and produce portraits for a photo collage. Following Kiesler and Duchamp’s instructions, Rainford captured the atelier from a series of unusual camera angles. Kiesler then assembled these images to create a folding photographic triptych – Les Larves d’Imagie d’Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp – for the art magazine View (No. 1, March 1945), which was dedicated to Marcel Duchamp.
The original prints, which can now be found in the archive of the Frederick Kiesler Foundation, provide the starting point for Gregor Schmoll’s new work Puparium: Atelier/Studio. In the work, Schmoll moves between objective sobriety and eulogistic transfiguration as he paraphrases both the photographic documentation and the photographic documents themselves. He uses this playful re-enactment to deconstruct the assumption that photography captures “reality” with pictorial accuracy and expose the “mythmaking” that interprets the studio space as a mysterious place of artistic creation.
