Diesen Sommer präsentiert das Museum für Kunst und Geschichte in einer Weltpremiere einen Einblick in die außergewöhnliche Sammlung von Fotografien verliebter Männer von Hugh Nini und Neal Treadwell, die sie in über zwanzig Jahren zusammengetragen haben. Die Aufnahmen, die zwischen den 1850er und 1950er Jahren entstanden, zeugen von Epochen und Orten, an denen die männliche Liebe geächtet wurde und manchmal noch immer wird. Exklusiv für das MAH und nach einer international erfolgreichen Veröffentlichung im Jahr 2020 haben die Sammler eine neue Auswahl für die Räume des Musée Rath zusammengestellt, die durch einen Vortrag von Walter Pfeiffer und durch Filmvorführungen von Urs Lüthi ergänzt wird.
Im Oktober 2020 erscheinen die verschiedenen Versionen des Buches Loving gleichzeitig in den Buchhandlungen auf der ganzen Welt und sind sofort ein Erfolg. Dieses schöne Buch vereint einen bescheidenen Teil der beeindruckenden fotografischen Sammlung - mehr als 4000 Bilder -, die das aus Texas stammende Sammlerpaar Hugh Nini und Neal Treadwell in den letzten zwanzig Jahren zusammengetragen hat. Die "zufällige Sammlung" begann zufällig, als sie ein Bild aus den 1920er Jahren fanden, das ihnen als einziges Zeugnis von Männern in einer Beziehung erschien. Seitdem ist die Sammlung stetig gewachsen und zeigt fast ein Jahrhundert voller Liebesgeschichten, die durch den Bürgerkrieg, die beiden Weltkriege und die Große Depression geprägt wurden.
Das Museum für Kunst und Geschichte freut sich sehr, dass Hugh Nini und Neal Treadwell, die seit 31 Jahren ein Ehepaar sind und in New York leben, den Vorschlag des Museums angenommen haben, eine Ausstellung rund um ihre Sammlung zu organisieren. Die Öffentlichkeit hat somit das Privileg, eine neue Auswahl dieser zum Teil unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen exklusiv in den Räumen des Musée Rath zu sehen. Die Botschaft bleibt die gleiche: Die Liebe zwischen zwei Menschen war schon immer ein universelles Gefühl und wird es auch bleiben, unabhängig von Zeit, Ort, Klasse, Geschlecht oder sozialem, moralischem oder politischem Klima.
Die Präsentation von Privatsammlungen gehört zu den großen Schwerpunkten der für das Musée Rath angestrebten Programmgestaltung. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zürcher Künstler Walter Pfeiffer, der eine Auswahl aus der Sammlung getroffen hat, und dem Schweizer Künstler Urs Lüthi, dessen Videos über Intimität und Partnerschaft im Untergeschoss des Rath-Gebäudes gezeigt werden, verbindet die Institution zeitgenössischen Geist mit historischer Strenge und pflegt gleichzeitig eine fröhliche Irreverenz.
Cet été, le Musée d'art et d'histoire présente en première mondiale un aperçu de l'exceptionnelle collection de photographies de Hugh Nini et Neal Treadwell, réunie pendant plus de vingt ans et figurant des hommes amoureux. Ces clichés, pris entre les années 1850 et les années 1950, témoignent d'époques et de lieux où l'amour au masculin était et continue parfois d'être proscrit. En exclusivité pour le MAH, et après une publication en 2020 qui fut un succès international, les collectionneurs ont réalisé un nouveau choix à destination des salles du Musée Rath, qui sera complété par une intervention de Walter Pfeiffer et par la projection de films signés Urs Lüthi.
En octobre 2020, les différentes versions de l'ouvrage Loving sortent simultanément dans les librairies du monde entier et rencontrent un succès immédiat. Ce beau livre réunit une modeste partie de l'impressionnante collection photographique – plus de 4000 images – réunie depuis une vingtaine d'années par un couple de collectionneurs d'origine texane, Hugh Nini et Neal Treadwell. Débutée par hasard, lorsqu'ils ont trouvé un cliché des années 1920 qui leur était apparu comme l'unique témoignage d'hommes en couple, leur « collection accidentelle » n’a cessé de grandir, retraçant près d’un siècle d’histoires d’amour marqué par la guerre de Sécession, les deux guerres mondiales ou encore la Grande Dépression.
Le Musée d’art et d’histoire est très heureux que Hugh Nini et Neal Treadwell, époux en couple depuis 31 ans et installés à New York, aient accepté sa proposition d’organiser une exposition autour de leur collection. Le public a ainsi le privilège de découvrir en exclusivité une nouvelle sélection de ces clichés, pour certains inédits, dans les salles du Musée Rath. Le message, lui, reste le même : l’amour entre deux individus a toujours été et restera un sentiment universel, quels que soient l’époque, le lieu, la classe, le sexe ou encore le climat social, moral ou politique.
La présentation de collections privées fait partie des grands axes de la programmation souhaitée pour le Musée Rath, et ce, dans le respect des valeurs du MAH. En associant à cette exposition l'artiste zurichois Walter Pfeiffer, lequel a opéré un choix au sein de la collection, et l’artiste suisse Urs Lüthi, dont les vidéos jouant sur l’intimité et le couple sont projetées au sous-sol du Rath, l’institution joint l’esprit contemporain à la rigueur historique, tout en cultivant une joyeuse irrévérence.

Queste fotografie, scattate tra gli anni Cinquanta e Cinquanta dell'Ottocento, testimoniano tempi e luoghi in cui l'amore maschile era, e talvolta è ancora, bandito. In esclusiva per il MAH, e dopo una pubblicazione del 2020 che ha riscosso un successo internazionale, i collezionisti hanno realizzato una nuova selezione per le sale del Musée Rath, che sarà integrata da una conferenza di Walter Pfeiffer e dalla proiezione di film di Urs Lüthi.
Nell'ottobre 2020, le varie versioni del libro Loving usciranno contemporaneamente nelle librerie di tutto il mondo con un immediato successo. Questo bellissimo libro raccoglie una modesta parte dell'imponente collezione fotografica - oltre 4.000 immagini - messa insieme negli ultimi vent'anni da una coppia di collezionisti di origine texana, Hugh Nini e Neal Treadwell. La loro "collezione accidentale" è iniziata per caso, quando hanno trovato una fotografia degli anni Venti che sembrava loro essere l'unica testimonianza di uomini in una relazione. Ha continuato a crescere, attraversando quasi un secolo di storie d'amore segnate dalla guerra civile americana, da due guerre mondiali e dalla Grande Depressione.
Il Musée d'art et d'histoire è lieto che Hugh Nini e Neal Treadwell, sposati da 31 anni e residenti a New York, abbiano accettato l'invito a organizzare una mostra basata sulla loro collezione. Il pubblico avrà il privilegio di scoprire una nuova selezione esclusiva di queste fotografie, alcune delle quali mai viste prima, nelle sale del Musée Rath. This summer, the Musée d'art et d'histoire presents the world premiere of Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell's exceptional collection of photographs of men in love, assembled over more than twenty years. These photographs, taken between the 1850s and the 1950s, bear witness to times and places where male love was, and sometimes still is, outlawed. Exclusively for the MAH, and following a publication in 2020 that was an international success, the collectors have produced a new selection for the halls of the Musée Rath, which will be complemented by a talk by Walter Pfeiffer and the screening of films by Urs Lüthi.
In October 2020, the various versions of the book Loving will be released simultaneously in bookshops around the world to immediate acclaim. This beautiful book brings together a modest part of the impressive photographic collection - more than 4,000 images - assembled over the last twenty years by Texan collectors Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell. Their "accidental collection" began by chance, when they found a photograph from the 1920s that seemed to them to be the only evidence of men in a relationship. It has continued to grow, tracing almost a century of love stories marked by the Civil War, the two World Wars and the Great Depression.
The Musée d'art et d'histoire is delighted that Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell, a New York-based husband and wife team of 31 years, have accepted our invitation to organize an exhibition based on their collection. The public now has the privilege of discovering an exclusive new selection of these photographs, some of them previously unseen, in the halls of the Musée Rath. The message remains the same: love between two individuals has always been and will remain a universal sentiment, whatever the time, place, class, sex or social, moral or political climate.

By associating the Zurich artist Walter Pfeiffer, who has made a selection from the collection, with this exhibition, and the Swiss artist Urs Lüthi, whose videos playing on intimacy and the couple are projected in the basement of the Rath, the institution combines contemporary spirit with historical rigor, while cultivating a joyful irreverence.
