Die MEP ist stolz darauf, eine besondere und einzigartige Sammlung zeitgenössischer Abzüge aus 20 Jahren Modefotografie von 1935 bis 1958 zu präsentieren. Diese außergewöhnliche Sammlung gehörte Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, einem der emblematischsten Models des 20. Jahrhunderts, die hier zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wird. Viele der Bilder sind bisher unveröffentlicht und bieten einen Einblick in das goldene Zeitalter der Modefotografie.
Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-1992), Tänzerin, Model, Fotografin, Designerin und Bildhauerin, gilt als das erste "Topmodel" der Geschichte. 20 Jahre lang wurde sie häufig in Harper's Bazaar und Vogue veröffentlicht. Sie ziert etwa 200 Titelseiten der grössten Modemagazine der Zeit. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere im Jahr 1949 erschien sie im Alter von 38 Jahren auf dem Titelblatt des Time Magazine.
Als gefragtes Model arbeitete sie mit den bekanntesten Modefotografen zusammen: Fernand Fonssagrives, ihrem ersten Ehemann, Horst P. Horst, dessen Lieblingsmodel sie war, George Hoyningen-Huene, Georges Platt Lynes, Erwin Blumenfeld, der sie in einem Kleid von Lucien Lelong am Eiffelturm hängend verewigte, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, deren ausgesprochen moderner Stil perfekt zu Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn passte, Irving Penn, den sie 1950 heiratete und der sie zu seiner Partnerin für seine größten Fotografien machte, Richard Avedon, ihre Freundin Frances McLaughlin-Gill, die erste weibliche Fotografin, die bei der Vogue unter Vertrag genommen wurde, und viele andere: Kathryn Abbe, James Abbe Jr. , Gene Fenn, Otto Fenn, Toni Frissell, Harold Halma, Genevieve Naylor, John Rawlings und Lillian Bassman.
Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn war mehr als nur ein Modell, sie war voll und ganz an der Entstehung der Fotografien beteiligt, für die sie Modell stand. Die meisten wurden im Studio aufgenommen, was stundenlange Vorbereitungen und eine echte Komplizenschaft zwischen dem Fotografen und seinem Modell erforderte.
Tom Penn, der Sohn von Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn und Irving Penn, schlug der MEP dieses Ausstellungsprojekt vor. Großzügigerweise schenkte er einen Teil dieses bemerkenswerten Ensembles der Sammlung des MEP.
Anlässlich dieser Ausstellung wird von SKIRA ein zweisprachiger französisch/englischer Katalog mit Texten von Simon Baker, Vince Aletti und Laurence Benaïm herausgegeben.

La MEP est fière de présenter une collection particulière et unique de tirages d’époque couvrant 20 ans de photographie de mode, de 1935 à 1958. Cet ensemble exceptionnel a appartenu à Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, l’une des mannequins les plus emblématiques du 20e siècle présentées au public pour la première fois. Beaucoup de ces images sont inédites et offrent une plongée dans l’âge d’or de la photographie de mode.
Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-1992), danseuse, mannequin, photographe, styliste et sculptrice, est considérée comme le premier « top model » de l’histoire. Pendant 20 ans, elle est fréquemment publiée dans Harper's Bazaar et Vogue. Elle fait environ 200 couvertures pour les plus grands magazines de mode d'époque. Au sommet de sa carrière en 1949, elle fait la couverture du magazine Time à l’âge de 38 ans.
Mannequin très demandée, elle a collaboré avec les plus grands photographes de mode : Fernand Fonssagrives, son premier mari, Horst P. Horst, dont elle fut la mannequin favorite, George Hoyningen-Huene, Georges Platt Lynes, Erwin Blumenfeld, qui l’immortalisa suspendue à la tour Eiffel, vêtue d’une robe de Lucien Lelong, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, dont le style résolument moderne convenait parfaitement à Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, Irving Penn, qu’elle épouse en 1950, et qui en fit sa partenaire pour ses plus grandes photographies, Richard Avedon, son amie Frances McLaughlin-Gill, première femme photographe en contrat avec Vogue, et beaucoup d’autres : Kathryn Abbe, James Abbe Jr., Gene Fenn, Otto Fenn, Toni Frissell, Harold Halma, Genevieve Naylor, John Rawlings and Lillian Bassman.
Plus qu’un modèle, Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn participait pleinement à l’élaboration des photographies pour lesquelles elle posait. La plupart ont été réalisées en studio, ce qui nécessitait des heures de préparation et une véritable complicité entre le photographe et son modèle.
Tom Penn, fils de Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn et d'Irving Penn, a proposé ce projet d'exposition à la MEP. Il a généreusement fait don d'une partie de cet ensemble remarquable à la collection du MEP.
À l'occasion de cette exposition, un catalogue bilingue français/anglais est édité par SKIRA avec des textes de Simon Baker, Vince Aletti et Laurence Benaïm.

The MEP is proud to present a unique collection of vintage prints spanning two decades of fashion photography, from 1935 to 1955. This extraordinary collection that once belonged to Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, one of the most iconic models of the 20th century, is presented here for the first time. Many of the works to be shown are previously unpublished and offer a glimpse into the golden age of fashion photography.
Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911-1992), dancer, model, photographer, stylist and sculptor, is considered to be the first 'supermodel' in history. For 20 years, she was frequently featured in Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, appearing on around 200 covers of the leading fashion magazines of her time. Horst, whose favourite model she was; George Hoyningen-Huene, Georges Platt Lynes, Erwin Blumenfeld, who famously photographed her hanging from the Eiffel Tower in a dress by Lucien Lelong; Louise Dahl-Wolfe, whose resolutely modern style suited Lisa perfectly; Irving Penn, whom she married in 1950, and who made her his partner in his greatest photographs, Richard Avedon, her friend Frances McLaughlin-Gill, the first woman photographer to be signed by Vogue; and many others, including Kathryn Abbe, James Abbe Jr., Gene Fenn, Otto Fenn, Toni Frissell, Harold Halma, Genevieve Naylor, John Rawlings and Lillian Bassman.
More than just a model, Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn contributed extensively to the creative process. Most of the photographs were taken in the studio and required long hours of preparation and a real connection between photographer and model.
Tom Penn, son of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn and Irving Penn, brought this exhibition project to the MEP. He has generously donated part of this remarkable ensemble to the MEP collection.
For this exhibition, the MEP is publishing with Skira a bilingual French/English catalogue with texts by Simon Baker, Vince Aletti and Laurence Benaïm.
