Extérieurs - Annie Ernaux et la Photographie feiert die enge Beziehung zwischen Fotografie und Schreiben von Annie Ernaux, die 2022 den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhalten wird, mit Texten aus ihrem Buch Journal du dehors (1993) und Fotografien aus der Sammlung der MEP. Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis einer Residenz, die die Kuratorin und Schriftstellerin Lou Stoppard im Mai 2022 leitete. Einen Monat lang nutzte sie die Sammlung der MEP für eine Recherche, die Fotografie und Literatur miteinander verband.
Die Ausstellung kombiniert Texte aus Annie Ernaux' Buch Journal du dehors, 1993 - eine Niederschrift von Alltagsszenen in den Straßen, Zügen und Geschäften zwischen Cergy-Pontoise und Paris aus den Jahren 1985 und 1992 - mit Werken aus der Sammlung der MEP. Die Auswahl von 150 Abzügen von 29 Fotografen, darunter Harry Callahan, Claude Dityvon, Dolorès Marat, Daido Moriyama, Janine Niepce, Issei Suda, Henry Wessel und Bernard Pierre Wolff, deckt den Zeitraum von 1940 bis 2010 ab. Die Ausstellung geht über den geografischen Rahmen des Buches hinaus und vereint die Fotografien, die größtenteils in Frankreich, aber auch in England, Japan, den USA und anderen Ländern aufgenommen wurden.
Annie Ernaux interessiert sich seit langem für Fotografie und in ihren Werken tauchen immer wieder Verweise auf Fotos aus ihrer Kindheit auf. In Journal du dehors spricht sie über den Versuch, so zu schreiben, als würde sie Bilder machen: "Ich habe versucht, eine Art fotografisches Schreiben des Realen zu praktizieren, in dem die gekreuzten Existenzen ihre Undurchsichtigkeit und ihr Rätsel bewahren würden." Die MEP würdigt Ernaux' Vision, indem sie ihre Schriften wie fotografische Abzüge an den Wänden anbringt. Die Bilder und Schriften enthüllen, wie gewöhnliche, scheinbar unbedeutende Ereignisse, die in der Stadt beobachtet werden, uns auf umfassendere soziale Ungleichheiten und Stereotypen hinweisen. Die Ausstellung dreht sich um zentrale Themen des Buches - unsere täglichen Rituale der Fortbewegung und des Konsums, unsere Klassen- und Geschlechterperformanz, die die Gesellschaft hierarchisiert, aber auch die Gefühle von Angst und Einsamkeit, die unsere modernen Städte auslösen können.
Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis einer Residenz, die die Kuratorin und Schriftstellerin Lou Stoppard im Mai 2022 durchführte. Einen Monat lang nutzte sie die Sammlung des MEP für eine Recherche, die Fotografie und Literatur miteinander verband.
Anlässlich dieser Ausstellung wird ein Katalog in französischer und englischer Sprache bei Éditions MACK in Partnerschaft mit der MEP veröffentlicht.

Extérieurs — Annie Ernaux et la Photographie célèbre la relation étroite entre la photographie et l’écriture d’Annie Ernaux, lauréate du prix Nobel de littérature en 2022, à travers des textes tirés de son livre Journal du dehors (1993) et des photographies issues de la collection de la MEP. L'exposition est le fruit d'une résidence menée par la commissaire et écrivaine Lou Stoppard en mai 2022. Pendant un mois, elle s'est appuyée sur la collection de la MEP pour une recherche liant photographie et littérature.
L’exposition associe des textes tirés du livre d’Annie Ernaux Journal du dehors, 1993 – une retranscription de scènes de vie quotidienne dans les rues, les trains, les magasins entre Cergy-Pontoise et Paris de 1985 et 1992 – à des œuvres de la collection de la MEP. La sélection de 150 tirages réalisés par 29 photographes parmi lesquel·les Harry Callahan, Claude Dityvon, Dolorès Marat, Daido Moriyama, Janine Niepce, Issei Suda, Henry Wessel et Bernard Pierre Wolff, couvre la période de 1940 à 2010. Dépassant le cadre géographique du livre, l’exposition réunit les photographies pour la plupart prises en France mais également en Angleterre, au Japon, aux États-Unis et d’autres pays.
Annie Ernaux s’intéresse depuis longtemps à la photographie et des références à des photos d’enfance apparaissent dans son travail. Dans Journal du dehors, elle évoque la tentative d’écrire comme si elle faisait des images : « J’ai cherché à pratiquer une sorte d’écriture photographique du réel, dans laquelle les existences croisées conserveraient leur opacité et leur énigme. » La MEP rend hommage à la vision d’Ernaux en affichant ses écrits sur les murs comme des tirages photographiques. Les images et les écrits dévoilent comment les événements ordinaires, en apparence insignifiants, observés dans la ville, nous renvoient à des inégalités et des stéréotypes sociaux plus larges. L’exposition s’articule autour de thèmes centraux du livre – nos rituels quotidiens de déplacement et de consommation, notre performance de classe et de genre qui hiérarchise la société, mais aussi les sentiments de peur et de solitude que peuvent provoquer nos villes modernes.

La mostra è il risultato di una residenza condotta dalla curatrice e scrittrice Lou Stoppard nel maggio 2022. Per un mese, la curatrice ha attinto alla collezione del MEP per condurre una ricerca che mette in relazione fotografia e letteratura.
La mostra combina i testi del libro di Annie Ernaux Journal du dehors, 1993 - una trascrizione di scene di vita quotidiana nelle strade, nei treni e nei negozi tra Cergy-Pontoise e Parigi tra il 1985 e il 1992 - con le opere della collezione del MEP. La selezione di 150 stampe di 29 fotografi, tra cui Harry Callahan, Claude Dityvon, Dolorès Marat, Daido Moriyama, Janine Niepce, Issei Suda, Henry Wessel e Bernard Pierre Wolff, copre il periodo dal 1940 al 2010. Superando l'ambito geografico del libro, la mostra riunisce fotografie scattate per lo più in Francia, ma anche in Inghilterra, Giappone, Stati Uniti e altri Paesi.
Annie Ernaux è da tempo interessata alla fotografia e nel suo lavoro compaiono riferimenti alle foto dell'infanzia. In Journal du dehors, descrive il suo tentativo di scrivere come se stesse realizzando immagini: "Ho cercato di praticare una sorta di scrittura fotografica del reale, in cui le esistenze che si intersecano conservassero la loro opacità e il loro enigma". Il MEP rende omaggio alla visione della Ernaux esponendo i suoi scritti sulle pareti come stampe fotografiche. Le immagini e gli scritti rivelano come eventi ordinari e apparentemente insignificanti osservati in città riflettano disuguaglianze sociali e stereotipi più ampi. La mostra è strutturata intorno ai temi centrali del libro: i nostri rituali quotidiani di viaggio e consumo, la nostra rappresentazione di classe e di genere che gerarchizza la società, ma anche i sentimenti di paura e solitudine che le nostre città moderne possono provocare.
La mostra è il risultato di una residenza condotta dalla curatrice e scrittrice Lou Stoppard nel maggio 2022. Per un mese, la curatrice ha attinto alla collezione del MEP per condurre una ricerca che collegasse fotografia e letteratura.
In concomitanza con la mostra, verrà pubblicato un catalogo in francese e inglese dalle Éditions MACK in collaborazione con il MEP.

Exteriors — Annie Ernaux and Photography celebrates the close relationship between photography and the writing of Annie Ernaux, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022, through texts from her book Exteriors (Journal du dehors), 1993, and photographs from the MEP collection. The exhibition is the product of a residency conducted by the curator and writer Lou Stoppard in April 2022, which focused on using the MEP collection as a catalyst for new research and for linking photography to other mediums.
Exteriors — Annie Ernaux and Photography celebrates the dynamic relationship between photography and the writing of Annie Ernaux. Winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature, Annie Ernaux is known for her social and feminist commitment, particularly to the younger generation, and for her ability to explore universal themes such as memory, identity and the human condition. Her precise style and emotional analysis have made her a major figure in contemporary literature. It combines texts from Ernaux’s book Exteriors (Journal du dehors), 1993 – a record of happenings on trains, shops and streets in-and-around Cergy-Pontoise between 1985 and 1992 – with more than one hundred and fifty images from the MEP collection by major photographers such as Harry Callahan, Claude Dityvon, Dolorès Marat, Daido Moriyama, Janine Niepce, Issei Suda, Henry Wessel and Bernard Pierre Wolff, amongst others. The image selection covers the second half of 20th century and includes photographs mostly taken in France but also in England, Japan, USA and other countries.
Photography has long been an interest of Annie Ernaux’s and references to childhood photographs appear across her work. In Exteriors she takes a new approach, by directly attempting to write as if making images: “To describe reality as through the eyes of a photographer and to preserve the mystery and opacity of the lives I encountered.” The exhibition pays homage to Annie Ernaux's objective, by treating her words as photographs, displaying them on the walls of the museum. The diverse photographs that appear alongside her texts reveal a shared interest in the role of place and space in how modern life unfolds. Both images and texts unveil how ordinary and insignificant events we observe in the city reflects back at us broader societal inequalities and stereotypes. The exhibition is grouped around themes that underpin Ernaux’s observations – from the daily rituals of travel and consumption, to the performances of class and gender performance that underpin society’s hierarchies. Also considered are the feelings of fear and loneliness prevalent in the modern city, and the fine lines between what is public and private, shared and separate.

To coincide with the exhibition, a catalogue will be published in French and in English by Éditions MACK in partnership with the MEP.
