Bernard Plossu, eine unbestrittene Figur der zeitgenössischen französischen Fotografie und kürzlich zusammen mit dem Schützen Guillaume Geneste Preisträger des Prix du tirage Collection Florence & Damien Bachelot, entdeckte 1966 die Vereinigten Staaten von Mexiko aus, wo ein Teil seiner Familie lebt und wo er einige Jahre zuvor in Chiapas eine filmische und fotografische Praxis begonnen hatte. Bill Coleman, einer seiner treuesten Freunde, wird sein Fährmann und Führer sein. Von 1966 bis 1974 sind es Jahre der Entdeckung der amerikanischen Gesellschaft und zahlreicher Begegnungen, insbesondere mit den Protagonisten der amerikanischen Gegenkultur. Von 1974 bis 1985 taucht er tief in den amerikanischen Westen ein. Im Jahr 1977 ließ er sogar seine Koffer in New Mexico stehen und gründete dort eine Familie, bis er 1985 unwiderruflich nach Frankreich zurückkehrte.
Angesichts der Unermesslichkeit und Vielfalt des amerikanischen Lebens, das sich seinem europäischen Blick plötzlich bot, entwickelte sich seine fotografische Praxis in vollem Umfang und verankerte sich in der für sie typischen Handschrift der Begegnung und der Sensibilität.
Die Bilder der "amerikanischen Jahre" von Bernard Plossu sind daher weniger ein Tagebuch eines fast zwanzigjährigen Aufenthalts in den Vereinigten Staaten als vielmehr eine echte existentielle Erfahrung, deren Faden sich wie die langen Straßen durch die verschiedenen Staaten des Westens zieht, die sich über die Grenzen hinwegsetzen und auf denen er als Seiltänzer des Zufalls und des Schicksals agiert. Die verschiedenen Etappen waren erfolgreich und die Fahrten blendend, bis sie schließlich zu einem unvorhersehbaren und endgültigen Ende kamen. "America: Love it or Leave it"; "So Long", antwortete Bernard Plossu mit vielen Bildern im Kopf und noch immer funkelnden Augen.
Seit 2007 und der Ausstellung "So Long, vivre l'Ouest américain 1970/1985" im Fonds régional d'art contemporain de Haute-Normandie hatte es keine weitere umfassende Arbeit über diese grundlegende Periode seines Schaffens gegeben.
Nach der wundersamen Wiederentdeckung von sechs Schachteln mit rund 860 Filmrollen und über 200 noch nicht inventarisierten Abzügen hat Bernard Plossu sein gesamtes Archiv aus diesen "amerikanischen Jahren" durchforstet. Es handelt sich also um eine beträchtliche Menge an unveröffentlichten Bildern, die sich heute unserem Blick bieten. Ein echtes Ereignis sowohl für die Kenntnis des fotografischen Werks von Bernard Plossu als auch für unsere Sicht auf die Vereinigten Staaten während dieser entscheidenden Jahrzehnte ihrer Geschichte durch die Augen eines "Frenchies".
Die Galerie du Jour präsentiert als absolute Ausnahme einen Teil der unveröffentlichten und kürzlich aufgefundenen Abzüge von Bernard Plossus Amerika-Aufenthalten in den Jahren 1974-1985. Die Bilder entfalten sich frei an der Wand, wie Roadmovies ohne Anfang und Ende, in denen die amerikanische Realität mit ihrer eigenen Mythologie verschmilzt.
Figure incontestée de la photographie française contemporaine, récemment lauréat avec le tireur Guillaume Geneste du Prix du tirage Collection Florence & Damien Bachelot, Bernard Plossu découvre les États-Unis en 1966, depuis le Mexique où une partie de sa famille est implantée et où il a initié quelques années plus tôt, dans le Chiapas, une pratique cinématographique et photographique. Bill Coleman, un de ses plus fidèles amis, sera son passeur et son guide. De 1966 à 1974, ce seront des années de découverte de la société américaine et de rencontres multiples, en particulier avec les protagonistes de la contre-culture américaine. De 1974 à 1985, une immersion approfondie dans le territoire de l’Ouest américain. En 1977, il pose même ses valises au Nouveau-Mexique et y fonde une famille, jusqu’à son retour irrévocable en France en 1985.
C’est donc face à l’immensité et la diversité de cette vie américaine qui s’offre soudain à son regard d’européen que sa pratique photographique va prendre toute son ampleur et s’ancrer sur cette écriture de la rencontre et du sensible qui la caractérise.
Aussi les images des « années américaines » de Bernard Plossu s’apparentent-elles moins à un journal de bord d’un séjour de près de vingt ans aux États-Unis qu’à une véritable expérience existentielle dont le fil s’étire comme ces longues routes qui traversent les différents états de l’Ouest en se jouant des frontières et sur lesquelles il joue les funambules du hasard et du destin. Les différentes étapes furent prospères et les trajets éblouissants jusqu’à un terme aussi imprévisible que définitif. « America: Love it or Leave it » ; « So Long », a répondu Bernard Plossu, des images plein la tête et l’oeil encore pétillant.
Depuis 2007 et l’exposition « So Long, vivre l’Ouest américain 1970/1985 » au Fonds régional d’art contemporain de Haute-Normandie, aucun autre travail approfondi n’avait été fait sur cette période fondatrice de son oeuvre.
À la faveur de la redécouverte miraculeuse de 6 boites contenant près 860 bobines et de plus de 200 tirages non encore inventoriés, Bernard Plossu s’est ainsi replongé dans l’ensemble de ses archives de ces « années américaines ». C’est donc une somme considérable d’images inédites qui s’offre aujourd’hui à notre regard. Un véritable événement tant pour la connaissance de l’oeuvre photographique de Bernard Plossu que pour notre vision des États-Unis durant des décennies déterminantes de son histoire à travers les yeux d’un « frenchie ».
La Galerie du Jour présente à titre tout à fait exceptionnel une partie des tirages inédits et récemment retrouvés concernant les séjours américains de Bernard Plossu durant les années 1974-1985. Les images se déroulent librement au mur, à l’instar de road movies sans début ni fin, où le réel américain se confond avec sa propre mythologie.

Dal 1966 al 1974 sono anni di scoperta della società americana e di molteplici incontri, in particolare con i protagonisti della controcultura americana. Dal 1974 al 1985 si immerge nel West americano. Nel 1977 si stabilisce addirittura nel New Mexico e vi mette su famiglia, fino al suo ritorno irrevocabile in Francia nel 1985.
È dunque di fronte all'immensità e alla diversità di questa vita americana che si offre improvvisamente al suo sguardo europeo che la sua pratica fotografica assumerà tutta la sua portata e si ancorerà a questa scrittura dell'incontro e del sensibile che la caratterizza.
Le immagini degli "anni americani" di Bernard Plossu non sono tanto il diario di bordo di un soggiorno di quasi vent'anni negli Stati Uniti, quanto una vera e propria esperienza esistenziale il cui filo conduttore si estende come le lunghe strade che attraversano i vari Stati dell'Ovest, giocando con le frontiere e sulle quali egli gioca a fare il funambolo del caso e del destino. Le diverse tappe sono state prospere e i viaggi folgoranti fino a un finale imprevedibile e definitivo. "America: Love it or Leave it"; "So Long", risponde Bernard Plossu, con la testa piena di immagini e gli occhi ancora scintillanti.
Dal 2007 e dalla mostra "So Long, living the American West 1970/1985" al Fonds régional d'art contemporain de Haute-Normandie, nessun altro lavoro approfondito era stato fatto su questo periodo fondante della sua opera.
Grazie alla miracolosa riscoperta di 6 scatole contenenti quasi 860 bobine e più di 200 stampe non ancora inventariate, Bernard Plossu ha ora approfondito l'intero archivio di questi "anni americani". Si tratta quindi di una somma considerevole di immagini inedite che è ora a nostra disposizione. Si tratta di un vero e proprio evento sia per la conoscenza dell'opera fotografica di Bernard Plossu sia per la visione degli Stati Uniti nei decenni decisivi della loro storia attraverso gli occhi di un "francese".
La Galerie du Jour presenta, in via del tutto eccezionale, una parte delle stampe inedite e recentemente ritrovate relative ai soggiorni americani di Bernard Plossu negli anni 1974-1985. Le immagini si dispiegano liberamente sulla parete, come road movie senza inizio né fine, dove la realtà americana si fonde con la propria mitologia.
An undisputed figure of contemporary French photography recently awarded the Florence & Damien Bachelot Collection Print Prize with Guillaume Geneste, Bernard Plossu discovered the United States in 1966, from Mexico where part of his family was based and where he had initiated a few years earlier, in Chiapas, a cinematographic and photographic practice. Bill Coleman, one of his most faithful friends, will be his guide. From 1966 to 1974, these were years of discovery of American society and multiple encounters, in particular with the protagonists of the American counterculture. From 1974 to 1985, he immersed himself in the American West. In 1977, he even settled in New Mexico and started a family there, until his irrevocable return to France in 1985.
It is thus in the face of the immensity and diversity of this American life that suddenly offers itself to his European gaze that his photographic practice will take on its full scope and anchor itself on this writing of the encounter and the sensitive that characterizes it.
Thus, the images of Bernard Plossu's "American years" are less like a logbook of a nearly twenty-year stay in the United States than a true existential experience whose thread stretches like the long roads that cross the various states of the West, playing with borders and on which he plays the tightrope walker of chance and fate. The different stages were prosperous and the journeys dazzling until an unpredictable and definitive end. "America: Love it or Leave it"; "So Long", replied Bernard Plossu, with images in his head and a sparkling eye.
Since 2007 and the exhibition "So Long, living the American West 1970/1985" at the Fonds régional d'art contemporain de Haute-Normandie, no other in-depth work had been done on this founding period of his work.
Thanks to the miraculous rediscovery of 6 boxes containing nearly 860 reels and more than 200 prints not yet inventoried, Bernard Plossu went back into his archives of these "American years". It is thus a considerable sum of unpublished images which is offered today to our glance. This is a real event both for the knowledge of Bernard Plossu's photographic work and for our vision of the United States during the decisive decades of its history through the eyes of a "Frenchman".
The Galerie du Jour presents, exceptionally, a part of the unpublished and recently found prints concerning Bernard Plossu's American stays during the years 1974-1985. The images unfold freely on the wall, like road movies without beginning or end, where the American reality merges with its own mythology.
