Zu Beginn des kommenden Jahres widmet die Fondation Beyeler dem kanadischen Künstler Jeff Wall (*1946) eine umfangreiche Einzelausstellung. Es handelt sich dabei um die erste Werkschau des Künstlers in der Schweiz seit zwei Jahrzehnten. Wall, der seit den späten 1970er-Jahren massgeblich zur Etablierung der Fotografie als eigenständiges Bildmedium beigetragen hat, gilt als Begründer der «inszenierten Fotografie». Er generiert zumeist grossformatige, aus einer Vielzahl von Einzelaufnahmen vielschichtig und subtil komponierte Fotografien, die oftmals durch Vorbilder aus der Kunstgeschichte und dem städtischen Alltagsleben angeregt sind. Unter den mehr als fünfzig in der Ausstellung der Fondation Beyeler versammelten Werken finden sich Grossbilddiapositive in Leuchtkästen, sowie schwarz-weiss Fotografien und farbige Fotodrucke. Die neueren, die gesamte Bandbreite seines Schaffens repräsentierenden Bilder treten dabei in einen Dialog mit ikonischen Arbeiten aus der Zeit von Walls künstlerischen Anfängen. In jedem der elf Säle entfalten sich vielfältige inhaltliche und formale Bezüge zwischen älteren und neueren Werken. Zudem werden in der Fondation Beyeler mehrere neue Arbeiten erstmals überhaupt öffentlich zu sehen sein.
En début d’année prochaine, la Fondation Beyeler consacrera une importante exposition individuelle à l’artiste canadien Jeff Wall (*1946), la première en Suisse depuis deux décennies. Wall, qui depuis la fin des années 1970 a largement contribué à établir la photographie en tant que médium autonome, est considéré comme l’un des représentants majeurs de la « staged photography » (photographie mise en scène). Il produit généralement des photographies grand format, composées de manière complexe et subtile à partir de nombreuses prises et souvent inspirées de l’histoire de l’art et de la vie quotidienne urbaine. Les plus de cinquante œuvres réunies dans l’exposition de la Fondation Beyeler comprendront des grandes diapositives dans des caissons lumineux, des photographies noir et blanc et des tirages en couleur. Au fil de onze salles d’exposition, des œuvres récentes tisseront un riche dialogue thématique et formel avec des travaux emblématiques des débuts de l’artiste. Dans le cadre de l’exposition de la Fondation Beyeler, plusieurs nouvelles œuvres de Wall seront données à voir en public pour la toute première fois.
All'inizio del prossimo anno, la Fondation Beyeler dedicherà un'ampia mostra personale all'artista canadese Jeff Wall (*1946). Si tratterà della prima mostra dell'artista in Svizzera da due decenni a questa parte. Wall, che dalla fine degli anni Settanta ha contribuito in modo significativo all'affermazione della fotografia come mezzo visivo indipendente, è considerato il fondatore della "staged photography". Generalmente realizza fotografie di grande formato composte in modo complesso e sottile da un gran numero di scatti singoli, spesso ispirati a modelli della storia dell'arte e della vita urbana quotidiana. Le oltre cinquanta opere in mostra alla Fondation Beyeler comprendono diapositive di grande formato in light box, fotografie in bianco e nero e stampe a colori. Le immagini più recenti, che rappresentano l'intero spettro della sua opera, entrano in dialogo con opere iconiche dell'epoca degli esordi artistici di Wall. In ognuna delle undici sale, una varietà di riferimenti tematici e formali si sviluppa tra le opere più vecchie e quelle più recenti. Inoltre, diverse opere nuove saranno esposte per la prima volta al pubblico alla Fondation Beyeler.
At the beginning of next year, the Fondation Beyeler will devote a comprehensive solo show to Canadian artist Jeff Wall (*1946). It will be the first such exhibition of his work in Switzerland in two decades. Since the late 1970s, Wall has contributed significantly to establishing photography as an autonomous medium and he is regarded as one of the key practitioners of “staged photography”. Wall mostly produces large-format photographs intricately and subtly composed from numerous single takes, oftentimes inspired by art history and urban everyday life. The more than fifty works brought together by the Fondation Beyeler will include large transparencies displayed in lightboxes as well as black and white photographs and colour C-prints. Across eleven rooms, more recent works will be brought into rich thematic and formal dialogue with iconic early pieces. The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler will feature several new works by Wall on public display for the very first time.
