17 künstlerisch-dokumentarische Foto- und Videoarbeiten aus der Sammlung des Museum Folkwang in Essen werden erstmals in einer Ausstellung in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart gezeigt. Die Serien vermitteln Themen aus Kultur, Gesellschaft und Politik. Mal sind sie klassisch als schwarz-weiße Handabzüge gefertigt, mal als Videoloop installiert oder direkt auf die Wand tapeziert. Die ausgewählten Arbeiten entstanden zwischen 1994 und 2019 und wurden von der Wüstenrot Stiftung ausgezeichnet und kuratorisch vom Museum Folkwang begleitet. Zu sehen ist die Jubiläumsausstellung unter dem Titel »Images of the Present« in »THE GÄLLERY – Raum für Fotografie« der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
Aus Anlass des 30-jährigen Bestehens der Dokumentarfotografie Förderpreise präsentiert »THE GÄLLERY – Raum für Fotografie« erstmals eine Auswahl von Arbeiten der Preisträgerinnen und Preisträger. Der renommierte Preis wird von der Wüstenrot Stiftung in Kooperation mit dem Museum Folkwang in Essen seit 1994 alle zwei Jahre vergeben und ist die bedeutendste Auszeichnung dieser Art in Deutschland. Gefördert werden Fotografinnen und Fotografen, die sich mit Themen der realen Lebenswelt beschäftigen und sich über zeitgenössische Mittel mit der Repräsentationsfunktion von Fotografie auseinandersetzen. Seit 1994 wurden 56 Absolventinnen und Absolventen von 20 Hochschulen in Deutschland in insgesamt 14 Runden ausgezeichnet. Bei den ersten Ausschreibungsrunden konnten sich Fotografie-Studierende selbst bewerben. Seit 2019 schlagen Hochschulen und Akademien potenzielle Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten vor, die im Rahmen des Preises ein neues Projekt umsetzen und damit das Verständnis von dokumentarischer Fotografie erweitern können.
Für die Jubiläumsausstellung hat die freie Kuratorin Christin Müller, die von der Wüstenrot Stiftung beauftragt wurde, 17 repräsentative Werkgruppen ausgewählt, die die Entwicklung dokumentarischer Konzepte seit den frühen 1990er-Jahren abbilden. In den vergangenen Dekaden löst ein subjektiver Blick vermehrt die Beobachtung aus der Distanz ab und konzeptuelle sowie installative Arbeitsweisen gewinnen an Bedeutung. Christin Müller erläutert: »Die Arbeiten der Dokumentarfotografie Förderpreise fordern unseren Blick heraus, die Beobachtungen der Künstlerinnen und Künstler mit den alltäglich auf uns einströmenden Medienbildern abzugleichen und somit die eigene Perspektive auf die Gegenwart zu befragen.«
Die Ausstellung »Images of the Present« ist in drei Themenbereiche gegliedert: »Beziehungsnetze des Porträts«, »Gesellschaft in Bewegung « und »Politische Landschaften«. Das erste Themenfeld »Beziehungsnetze des Porträts« untersucht auf vielfältige Weise dieses klassische Bildgenre der Fotografie. Darin ist unter anderem die Serie »Das Geld der Anderen« (2012) von Paula Markert zu sehen, die sich mit Akteurinnen und Akteuren der Hochfinanzwelt in London, New York und Paris beschäftigt. Das Kapitel »Gesellschaft in Bewegung« befasst sich mit Themen des persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Wandels. Die Serie »Land ohne Eltern« (2007) von Andrea Diefenbach beschreibt die Lebenswirklichkeit von Kindern in Moldawien, die bei ihren Großeltern aufwachsen, da ihre Eltern als Arbeitsmigrantinnen und -migranten nur im Ausland den Lebensunterhalt für ihre Familie erarbeiten können. Die Werke im Themenkomplex »Politische Landschaften« zeigen, wie sich gesellschaftspolitische Interessen in unsere Lebenswelten einschreiben. Kirill Golovchenkos Serie »Der Ukrainische Durchbruch« (2008) fotografierte den veränderten Alltag des Landes seit der Unabhängigkeit von der Sowjetunion, der so nun nicht mehr existiert. Golovchenkos Bilder verdeutlichen die spannungsreiche Verbindung zwischen der fotografisch festgehaltenen Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart, die allen dokumentarischen Arbeiten innewohnt, sich hier aber besonders eindrücklich zeigt.
17 travaux photographiques et vidéo artistiques et documentaires issus de la collection du musée Folkwang à Essen sont présentés pour la première fois dans une exposition à la Staatsgalerie de Stuttgart. Les séries véhiculent des thèmes de culture, de société et de politique. Tantôt elles sont réalisées de manière classique sous forme de tirages manuels en noir et blanc, tantôt elles sont installées sous forme de boucles vidéo ou tapissées directement sur le mur. Les travaux sélectionnés ont été réalisés entre 1994 et 2019 et ont été récompensés par la Fondation Wüstenrot et accompagnés par le Museum Folkwang en tant que conservateur. À l'occasion du 30e anniversaire des prix d'encouragement pour la photographie documentaire, "THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie" présente pour la première fois une sélection de travaux des lauréats. Ce prix renommé est décerné tous les deux ans depuis 1994 par la Fondation Wüstenrot en coopération avec le musée Folkwang d'Essen et constitue la plus importante distinction de ce type en Allemagne. Sont encouragés les photographes qui s'intéressent à des thèmes du monde réel de la vie et qui se penchent sur la fonction de représentation de la photographie par le biais de moyens contemporains. Depuis 1994, 56 diplômés de 20 établissements d'enseignement supérieur en Allemagne ont été récompensés au cours de 14 éditions au total. Lors des premières éditions, les étudiants en photographie pouvaient poser eux-mêmes leur candidature. Depuis 2019, les établissements d'enseignement supérieur et les académies proposent des candidats potentiels qui peuvent mettre en œuvre un nouveau projet dans le cadre du prix et élargir ainsi la compréhension de la photographie documentaire.
Pour l'exposition anniversaire, la curatrice indépendante Christin Müller, mandatée par la Fondation Wüstenrot, a sélectionné 17 groupes d'œuvres représentatifs de l'évolution des concepts documentaires depuis le début des années 1990. Au cours des dernières décennies, un regard subjectif remplace de plus en plus l'observation à distance et les méthodes de travail conceptuelles et installatives gagnent en importance. Christin Müller explique : "Les travaux des prix d'encouragement de la photographie documentaire mettent notre regard au défi de comparer les observations des artistes avec les images médiatiques qui nous parviennent quotidiennement et d'interroger ainsi notre propre perspective sur le présent".
L'exposition "Images of the Present" s'articule autour de trois thèmes : "Réseaux de relations du portrait", "Société en mouvement" et "Paysages politiques". Le premier thème, "Réseaux de relations du portrait", explore de manière variée ce genre classique de la photographie. On y voit notamment la série "Das Geld der Anderen" (2012) de Paula Markert, qui s'intéresse aux acteurs et actrices du monde de la haute finance à Londres, New York et Paris. Le chapitre "Société en mouvement" aborde les thèmes du changement personnel et social. La série "Land ohne Eltern" (2007) d'Andrea Diefenbach décrit la réalité de la vie des enfants en Moldavie qui grandissent chez leurs grands-parents, car leurs parents, migrants du travail, ne peuvent gagner leur vie pour leur famille qu'à l'étranger. Les œuvres du complexe thématique "Paysages politiques" montrent comment les intérêts sociopolitiques s'inscrivent dans nos environnements. La série de Kirill Golovchenko "La percée ukrainienne" (2008) a photographié le quotidien modifié du pays depuis l'indépendance de l'Union soviétique, qui n'existe plus sous cette forme. Les visuels de Golovchenko illustrent le lien tendu entre le passé photographié et le présent, un lien inhérent à tous les travaux documentaires, mais qui se manifeste ici de manière particulièrement impressionnante.

Le serie trasmettono temi di cultura, società e politica. A volte sono prodotte in modo classico come stampe a mano in bianco e nero, altre volte sono installate come video loop o direttamente sulla parete. Le opere selezionate sono state create tra il 1994 e il 2019 e sono state premiate dalla Fondazione Wüstenrot e accompagnate curatorialmente dal Museum Folkwang. La mostra dell'anniversario, intitolata "Immagini del presente", può essere visitata presso "THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie" alla Staatsgalerie di Stoccarda.
In occasione del 30° anniversario del Documentary Photography Award, "THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie" presenta per la prima volta una selezione di opere dei vincitori del premio. Il rinomato premio viene assegnato dalla Fondazione Wüstenrot in collaborazione con il Museum Folkwang di Essen ogni due anni dal 1994 ed è il più importante premio del suo genere in Germania. Il premio viene assegnato a fotografi che trattano temi del mondo reale e che esplorano la funzione rappresentativa della fotografia attraverso mezzi contemporanei. Dal 1994, 56 laureati di 20 università tedesche sono stati premiati in un totale di 14 tornate. Nei primi turni del concorso, gli studenti di fotografia potevano candidarsi da soli. Dal 2019, le università e le accademie suggeriscono potenziali candidati che possono realizzare un nuovo progetto nell'ambito del premio, ampliando così la comprensione della fotografia documentaria.
Per la mostra dell'anniversario, la curatrice freelance Christin Müller, incaricata dalla Fondazione Wüstenrot, ha selezionato 17 gruppi rappresentativi di opere che ritraggono lo sviluppo dei concetti di documentario a partire dai primi anni Novanta. Negli ultimi decenni, la visione soggettiva ha sostituito sempre più l'osservazione da lontano e i metodi di lavoro concettuali e installativi hanno acquisito importanza. Christin Müller spiega: "Le opere del Documentary Photography Promotion Awards sfidano il nostro sguardo a confrontare le osservazioni degli artisti con le immagini dei media che ci scorrono addosso ogni giorno, mettendo così in discussione la nostra prospettiva sul presente".
La mostra "Immagini del presente" è suddivisa in tre aree tematiche: "Reti di relazione del ritratto", "Società in movimento" e "Paesaggi politici". La prima area tematica, "Reti relazionali del ritratto", esplora questo classico genere fotografico in vari modi. Include la serie "Das Geld der Anderen" (2012) di Paula Markert, che si occupa di attori del mondo dell'alta finanza a Londra, New York e Parigi. Il capitolo "Society on the Move" affronta i temi del cambiamento personale e sociale. La serie "Land ohne Eltern" (2007) di Andrea Diefenbach descrive la realtà della vita dei bambini moldavi che crescono con i nonni perché i loro genitori, immigrati per lavoro, possono guadagnarsi da vivere per la famiglia solo all'estero. Le opere del complesso tematico "Paesaggi politici" mostrano come gli interessi socio-politici siano inscritti nei nostri mondi vitali. La serie di Kirill Golovchenko "The Ukrainian Breakthrough" (2008) ha fotografato la mutata vita quotidiana del Paese dopo l'indipendenza dall'Unione Sovietica, che non esiste più in questa forma. Le immagini di Golovchenko illustrano il legame teso tra il passato fotografato e il presente, che è insito in tutte le opere documentarie, ma che in questo caso è particolarmente impressionante.
17 artistic-documentary photo and video works from the collection of the Museum Folkwang in Essen are shown for the first time in an exhibition at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The series convey themes from culture, society and politics. Sometimes they are classically made as black-and-white hand prints, sometimes installed as video loops or wallpapered directly onto the wall. The selected works were created between 1994 and 2019 and were awarded by the Wüstenrot Foundation and curatorially accompanied by the Museum Folkwang. The anniversary exhibition can be seen under the title "Images of the Present" in "THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie" of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Documentary Photography Award, "THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie" presents for the first time a selection of works by the award winners. The renowned prize has been awarded by the Wüstenrot Foundation in cooperation with the Museum Folkwang in Essen every two years since 1994 and is the most important award of its kind in Germany. The award is given to photographers who deal with themes from the real world and who explore the representational function of photography through contemporary means. Since 1994, 56 graduates from 20 universities in Germany have received awards in a total of 14 rounds. In the first rounds of the competition, photography students were able to apply themselves. Since 2019, universities and academies have been suggesting potential candidates who can implement a new project as part of the award and thus expand the understanding of documentary photography.
For the anniversary exhibition, freelance curator Christin Müller, commissioned by the Wüstenrot Foundation, has selected 17 representative groups of works that map the development of documentary concepts since the early 1990s. In recent decades, a subjective view has increasingly replaced observation from a distance, and conceptual and installative working methods have gained in importance. Christin Müller explains, "The works of the Documentary Photography Promotion Awards challenge our gaze to compare the artists' observations with the media images that flow at us every day, and thus to question our own perspective on the present."
The exhibition "Images of the Present" is divided into three thematic areas: "Relational Networks of the Portrait," "Society in Motion " and "Political Landscapes." The first thematic area, "Relationship Networks of the Portrait," explores this classic genre of photography in a variety of ways. It includes, among others, the series "The Money of Others" (2012) by Paula Markert, which deals with actors in the world of high finance in London, New York, and Paris. The chapter "Society in Motion" deals with themes of personal and social change. The series "Land ohne Eltern" (2007) by Andrea Diefenbach describes the reality of life for children in Moldova who grow up with their grandparents because their parents, as migrant workers, can only earn a living for their family abroad. The works in the thematic complex "Political Landscapes" show how sociopolitical interests are inscribed in our lifeworlds. Kirill Golovchenko's series "The Ukrainian Breakthrough" (2008) photographed the country's changed everyday life since independence from the Soviet Union, which no longer exists in this form. Golovchenko's visuals illustrate the tense connection between the photographically captured past and the present, which is inherent in all documentary works, but is particularly striking here.
