Sie wechselt Rollen und Perspektiven, spielt mit Beziehungen im kreativen Prozess und öffnet immer neue Türen zwischen der Fotografie und anderen Künsten. Mit In Reference to a sunny Place, der in Deutschland bislang umfangreichsten Überblicksausstellung, ehrt das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) die finnische Künstlerin Elina Brotherus.
Zu sehen sind zentrale Themen und Werke aus ihren vergangenen 20 Schaffensjahren. So befasst sich Brotherus in ihren Bildserien und Videoarbeiten immer wieder mit den vielfältigen Verbindungen zwischen Model, Künstler*in und Betrachter*in, zwischen Mann und Frau, Figur und Ort sowie mit den Genres Porträt und Akt. Mit für sie typischen mal kuriosen, mal anrührenden, mal ironischen Selbstinszenierungen lotet die Fotografin Emotionen und Spannungen aus, beispielsweise Allein- und Zusammensein, Verloren- und Geborgenheit, Liebe, Sehnsucht, Trauer und in ihren jüngeren Werken wieder häufiger Freude.
Oft zieht sie ihre Inspiration aus der Auseinandersetzung mit Kunstströmungen von Romantik bis Fluxus. Referenzen zum Maler Caspar David Friedrich finden sich beispielsweise in ihrer Werkgruppe Der Wanderer, auf die Multimedia-Künstlerin Yoko Ono verweist die Video-Arbeit The Wish Tree. Außerdem zeigt das FFF die Serie Sebaldiana. Memento Mori, Brotherus’ Beschäftigung mit dem deutschen Literaten W.G. Sebald und dem kurzen Künstlerdasein ihrer Mutter Ulla Brotherus. Eine Buchpublikation der Fotografin zu dieser Serie erscheint im Sommer 2022.
Elina Brotherus, geboren in Helsinki, studierte Fotografie (Abschluss Master) und Chemie (Master of Science) – und ist eine der frühen Protagonist*innen der sogenannten The Helsinki School, einem in den 1990ern experimentell arbeitenden Zusammenschluss junger visueller Künstler*innen u.a. an der heutigen Aalto-University Helsinki. Die in Finnland und Frankreich lebende Fotografin gilt als eine der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Fotokünstlerinnen Europas. Ihre Arbeiten wurden seit 1997 international ausgestellt, sind zahlreich publiziert, preisgekrönt und in renommierten Museums- und sonstigen Sammlungen zu finden. Das FFF zeigt sie nach 2014 zum zweiten Mal.
Die Schau Elina Brotherus. In Reference to a sunny Place wird von der Feith-Stiftung, der Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation sowie dem Frauenreferat der Stadt Frankfurt gefördert.

Avec In Reference to a sunny Place, l'exposition la plus complète jamais organisée en Allemagne, le Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) rend hommage à l'artiste finlandaise Elina Brotherus.
On peut y voir des thèmes et des œuvres centraux de ses 20 dernières années de travail. Dans ses séries d'images et ses travaux vidéo, Elina Brotherus s'intéresse aux multiples liens entre le modèle, l'artiste* et le spectateur*, entre l'homme et la femme, entre le personnage et le lieu, ainsi qu'aux genres du portrait et du nu. Avec des mises en scène de soi tantôt curieuses, tantôt touchantes, tantôt ironiques, la photographe explore les émotions et les tensions, par exemple le fait d'être seul ou ensemble, d'être perdu ou en sécurité, l'amour, la nostalgie, la tristesse et, dans ses œuvres les plus récentes, de nouveau plus souvent la joie.
Elle puise souvent son inspiration dans des courants artistiques allant du romantisme à Fluxus. On trouve par exemple des références au peintre Caspar David Friedrich dans son groupe d'œuvres Der Wanderer, tandis que l'œuvre vidéo The Wish Tree fait référence à l'artiste multimédia Yoko Ono. Le FFF présente également la série Sebaldiana. Memento Mori, l'intérêt de Brotherus pour l'homme de lettres allemand W.G. Sebald et la courte vie d'artiste de sa mère Ulla Brotherus. Un livre de la photographe consacré à cette série paraîtra à l'été 2022.
Elina Brotherus, née à Helsinki, a étudié la photographie (master) et la chimie (master of science) - et est l'une des premières protagonistes de la Helsinki School, un groupe de jeunes artistes visuels travaillant de manière expérimentale dans les années 1990, entre autres à l'actuelle université Aalto d'Helsinki. La photographe, qui vit en Finlande et en France, est considérée comme l'une des plus importantes artistes photographiques contemporaines d'Europe. Son travail a été exposé internationalement depuis 1997, a fait l'objet de nombreuses publications, a été primé et figure dans des musées et autres collections prestigieuses. Le FFF la présente pour la deuxième fois après 2014.
L'exposition Elina Brotherus. In Reference to a sunny Place est soutenue par la Feith-Stiftung, la Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation ainsi que le Frauenreferat de la ville de Francfort.

Nelle sue serie di immagini e nei suoi lavori video, Brotherus si confronta ripetutamente con le molteplici connessioni tra modello, artista e spettatore, tra uomo e donna, figura e luogo, nonché con i generi del ritratto e del nudo. Con i suoi tipici autoscatti, a volte curiosi, a volte commoventi, a volte ironici, la fotografa esplora emozioni e tensioni, come l'essere soli e l'essere insieme, lo smarrimento e la sicurezza, l'amore, la nostalgia, la tristezza e, nei suoi lavori più recenti, più spesso la gioia.
Spesso trae ispirazione dall'esame dei movimenti artistici, dal Romanticismo a Fluxus. Riferimenti al pittore Caspar David Friedrich, ad esempio, si trovano nel gruppo di opere The Wanderer, mentre l'opera video The Wish Tree fa riferimento all'artista multimediale Yoko Ono. Il FFF presenta anche la serie Sebaldiana. Memento Mori, la preoccupazione di Brotherus per la figura letteraria tedesca W.G. Sebald e la breve vita artistica della madre Ulla Brotherus. Una pubblicazione del fotografo su questa serie sarà pubblicata nell'estate del 2022.

Il fotografo, che vive in Finlandia e in Francia, è considerato uno dei più importanti artisti fotografici contemporanei in Europa. Dal 1997 le sue opere sono state esposte a livello internazionale, sono state ampiamente pubblicate, hanno vinto premi e si trovano in rinomate collezioni museali e non. Il FFF la presenta per la seconda volta dopo il 2014.

She changes roles and perspectives, plays with relationships in the creative process and always opens new doors between photography and other arts. With In Reference to a sunny Place, the most comprehensive survey exhibition in Germany to date, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) honors the Finnish artist Elina Brotherus.
On display are central themes and works from the past 20 years of her career. In her image series and video works, Brotherus repeatedly deals with the manifold connections between model, artist and viewer, between man and woman, figure and place, as well as with the genres portrait and nude. With her typical sometimes curious, sometimes touching, sometimes ironic self-staging, the photographer explores emotions and tensions, for example, being alone and being together, being lost and secure, love, longing, sadness, and in her more recent works, more often joy.
She often draws her inspiration from the examination of art movements from Romanticism to Fluxus. References to the painter Caspar David Friedrich, for example, can be found in her group of works Der Wanderer, while the video work The Wish Tree refers to the multimedia artist Yoko Ono. The FFF is also showing the series Sebaldiana. Memento Mori, Brotherus' preoccupation with the German literary figure W.G. Sebald and the brief artistic life of her mother Ulla Brotherus. A book publication by the photographer on this series will be published in the summer of 2022.
