Im Frühjahr 2023, dem Zwischenjahr der Biennale für Fotografie von Casale Monferrato, kündigen die Gemeinde Casale und die künstlerische Leiterin Mariateresa Cerretelli die erste Saison des Middle MonFest mit einer großen Ausstellung an, die der brillanten kreativen Persönlichkeit von Maria Vittoria Backhaus gewidmet ist, von ihren Anfängen in den 1970er Jahren bis heute.
Es handelt sich um eine große anthologische Ausstellung, die das Ergebnis einer sorgfältigen Recherche in einem reichen und gegliederten Archiv ist, in dem sich die Jahre der redaktionellen Gestaltung mit einer unaufhörlichen persönlichen Studie abwechseln und die Bilder neue und gegenläufige Interpretationen für Mode, Design und Porträt widerspiegeln, mit einer phantasmagorischen Produktion von Stillleben und künstlerischen Konstruktionen, die die Vielseitigkeit einer großen italienischen Protagonistin, Fotografin, gebürtige Mailänderin und adoptierte Piemontesin, zum Ausdruck bringen.
Im Sale Chagall des Schlosses Casale Monferrato wird eine kaleidoskopische Bildergalerie ausgestellt, die von Luciano Bobba und Angelo Ferrillo unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Mariateresa Cerretelli kuratiert wird, um die Kreativität des Autors in der Runde zu entdecken. Explosiv, experimentell und revolutionär für die Zeit, beseelt von einer fast wahnsinnigen Aufmerksamkeit für die Ästhetik und die Finesse der Fotografien und immer einen Schritt voraus gegenüber dem Klassizismus der Bilder, die in Hochglanzmagazinen oder Werbekampagnen von den 1970er Jahren bis heute herrschen, gehört der Künstler/Fotograf zu Recht zu den führenden Namen der italienischen Fotografie. Mit einer noch nie dagewesenen Neuinterpretation eines immensen und äußerst reichhaltigen Archivs untersucht die Ausstellung die verschiedenen Themen, die das facettenreiche Genie von Maria Vittoria Backhaus ausmachen, die sich vor allem in redaktionellen Arbeiten, in der Werbung und auf ihrem persönlichen Weg durch die Beobachtung und Fokussierung auf eine Gesellschaft in ständiger Entwicklung ausgedrückt hat.
"Die künstlerische Kreativität verbindet uns, und die Ausstellung mit Maria Vittoria Schritt für Schritt zu studieren, ist für mich wie die parallele Linie eines natürlichen und spontanen Austauschs ohne Barrieren in einem Fluss von Gedanken und tiefen und unmittelbaren ästhetischen Übereinstimmungen, die sich aus unserer gemeinsamen Leidenschaft für die Fotokunst ergeben", sagt Kurator Luciano Bobba.
Ein Wirbelwind aus Schwarz-Weiß und Farbe, der den Spiegel einer grenzenlosen Ikonographie darstellt, in der sich Backhaus mit Leichtigkeit bewegt und auch eine eingehende Studie über die Verwendung der verschiedenen von ihm verwendeten Kameras offenbart.
"Ich habe", so der Autor, "mit allen möglichen Formaten von analogen Kameras gearbeitet, vom Leica-Format bis zu den Großformaten mit dem Balgengerät unter dem schwarzen Tuch 20 x 25. Sie passten alle in einen großen Schrank in meinem Atelier. Ich mochte sie auch als Objekte, also habe ich sie auch porträtiert. Ich musste all die verschiedenen Techniken lernen, um sie verwenden zu können, eignete sie mir an, vergaß sie aber zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme, um mich auf die Geschichte des Fotos zu konzentrieren".
In den Chagall-Sälen entfalten sich die Hauptthemen einer sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Geschichte: Mode, Accessoires, Stillleben, Design, Natur, Statuetten, Collagen und szenische Kompositionen aus Miniaturgebäuden und Puppen. Mehr als vierzig Jahre Fotografie, in denen Reportagen und Porträts Platz finden, werden durch engagierte Geschichten ergänzt, darunter die Bewohner von Filicudi, der geliebten Insel des Fotografen, und, in jüngerer Zeit, Rocchetta Tanaro und seine Bewohner aus dem Monferrato.
Co-Kurator Angelo Ferrillo kennt Maria Vittoria Backhaus und ihre fotografische Erzählung seit langem: "Fantasievoll. Das ist das Adjektiv, das mir in den Sinn kam, als ich das erste Mal das Glück hatte, Maria Vittorias Arbeiten zu sehen. Als ich sie näher kennenlernte, ihre Produktion erlebte und mich in ihr Denken vertiefte, wurde mir klar, wie sehr sich ihre Fotografie in einem Gleichgewicht zwischen Vision, Kreativität und Methode bewegt".
Die Ausstellung ist eine Hommage an einen phantasievollen Geist mit einer unaufhaltsamen künstlerischen Ader, der sich ganz der Sprache der Fotografie verschrieben hat.
Au printemps 2023, année intermédiaire de la Biennale de photographie de Casale Monferrato, la municipalité de Casale et la directrice artistique Mariateresa Cerretelli annoncent la première saison du Middle MonFest avec une grande exposition dédiée à la brillante personnalité créative de Maria Vittoria Backhaus, de ses débuts dans les années 1970 à aujourd'hui.
Il s'agira d'une grande exposition anthologique, fruit d'une recherche minutieuse dans des archives riches et articulées où les années de conception éditoriale alternent avec une étude personnelle incessante et où les images reflètent des interprétations nouvelles et à contre-courant faites pour la mode, le design et le portrait, avec une production fantasmagorique de natures mortes et de constructions artistiques qui expriment la polyvalence d'une grande protagoniste italienne, photographe, milanaise de naissance et piémontaise d'adoption.
La vente Chagall du château Casale Monferrato accueillera une galerie d'images kaléidoscopiques, organisée par Luciano Bobba et Angelo Ferrillo, sous la direction artistique de Mariateresa Cerretelli, afin de découvrir la créativité de l'auteur dans son ensemble. Explosif, expérimental et révolutionnaire pour l'époque, animé par une attention presque maniaque à l'esthétique et à la finesse des photographies, et toujours en avance sur le classicisme des images qui règnent dans les magazines en papier glacé ou les campagnes publicitaires des années 1970 à aujourd'hui, l'artiste-photographe figure à juste titre parmi les plus grands noms de la photographie italienne. Avec une réinterprétation sans précédent d'un fonds d'archives immense et extrêmement riche, l'exposition examine les différents thèmes qui composent le génie multiforme de Maria Vittoria Backhaus, qui s'est exprimée avant tout dans des travaux éditoriaux, dans des publicités et dans son propre parcours personnel, à travers une observation et une focalisation sur une société en constante évolution.
"La créativité artistique nous unit et, pour moi, étudier l'exposition avec Maria Vittoria pas à pas, c'est comme suivre la ligne parallèle d'un échange naturel et spontané, sans barrières, dans un flux de pensées et d'accords esthétiques profonds et immédiats qui dérivent de notre passion commune pour l'art photographique", déclare le commissaire Luciano Bobba.
Un tourbillon de noir et blanc et de couleurs qui représente le miroir d'une iconographie sans frontières, où Backhaus se déplace avec aisance et révèle également une étude approfondie de l'utilisation des différents appareils photo qu'il utilise.
"J'ai travaillé avec tous les formats possibles d'appareils photo analogiques, du format Leica aux grands formats avec le soufflet sous la toile noire 20 x 25. Ils tenaient tous dans une grande armoire de mon studio. Je les aimais aussi en tant qu'objets, c'est pourquoi j'en ai fait le portrait. J'ai dû apprendre toutes les différentes techniques pour pouvoir les utiliser, je les ai acquises mais je les ai oubliées au moment de la prise de vue pour me concentrer sur l'histoire de la photographie".
Les principaux thèmes d'une histoire toujours en cours se déploient dans les salles Chagall, mettant en lumière la mode, les accessoires, les natures mortes, le design, la nature, les statuettes, les collages et les compositions scéniques construites avec des bâtiments miniatures et des marionnettes. Plus de quarante ans de photographie où le reportage et le portrait trouvent leur place et sont complétés par des histoires dédiées aux habitants de Filicudi, l'île bien-aimée du photographe et, plus récemment, à Rocchetta Tanaro et à ses habitants du Monferrato.
Angelo Ferrillo, co-commissaire de l'exposition, connaît Maria Vittoria Backhaus et sa narration photographique depuis longtemps : "Imaginative. C'est l'adjectif qui m'a envahi la première fois que j'ai eu la chance de voir le travail de Maria Vittoria. Au fur et à mesure que je la connaissais en profondeur, que j'expérimentais sa production et que j'approfondissais sa réflexion, je me suis rendu compte à quel point sa photographie évoluait dans un équilibre entre vision, créativité et méthode".
Cette exposition rend hommage à un esprit imaginatif et à une veine artistique inépuisable, tous deux dédiés au langage de la photographie.
Nella primavera del 2023, l’anno d’intermezzo della Biennale di Fotografia di Casale Monferrato, il Comune di Casale e il Direttore artistico Mariateresa Cerretelli annunciano la prima stagione del Middle MonFest con una grande esposizione dedicata alla brillante personalità creativa di Maria Vittoria Backhaus, dai suoi esordi negli Anni Settanta al contemporaneo.
Sarà una grande antologica, frutto di un’attenta ricerca all’interno di un archivio ricco e articolato dove gli anni di progettazione editoriale si alternano a un incessante studio personale e le immagini rispecchiano interpretazioni nuove e controcorrente realizzate per la Moda, il Design e la Ritrattistica, con una fantasmagorica produzione di Still life e di Costruzioni artistiche che esprimono la versatilità di una grande protagonista italiana, fotografa, milanese di nascita e piemontese d’adozione.
A sfilare nelle Sale Chagall del Castello di Casale Monferrato sarà una galleria caleidoscopica di immagini, curata da Luciano Bobba e Angelo Ferrillo con la direzione artistica di Mariateresa Cerretelli per scoprire la creatività dell’autrice a tutto tondo. Esplosiva, sperimentale e rivoluzionaria per i tempi, animata da un’attenzione quasi maniacale per l’estetica e per la finezza delle fotografie e sempre un passo avanti rispetto alla classicità delle immagini imperanti nelle riviste patinate o nelle campagne pubblicitarie dagli anni ’70 a oggi, l’artista/fotografa si colloca a pieno titolo tra i nomi di punta della fotografia italiana. Con una rilettura inedita di un archivio sterminato e ricchissimo, la mostra prende in esame i vari temi che compongono la multiforme genialità di Maria Vittoria Backhaus che si è espressa soprattutto in ambito editoriale, nelle pubblicità e in un suo percorso personale attraverso un’osservazione e una messa a fuoco di una società in evoluzione continua.
“La creatività artistica ci unisce e per me studiare la mostra con Maria Vittoria passo dopo passo è come seguire la linea parallela di uno scambio naturale e spontaneo senza barriere in un fluire di pensiero e di accordi estetici profondi e immediati che derivano dalla comune passione per l’arte fotografica” afferma il curatore Luciano Bobba.
Una girandola di bianco e nero e di colore che rappresenta lo specchio di un’iconografia senza confini, dove Backhaus si muove a suo agio e rivela anche uno studio approfondito sull’uso delle diverse macchine fotografiche di cui si serve.
“Ho lavorato – afferma l’autrice – con tutti i formati possibili delle macchine fotografiche analogiche, dal formato Leica ai grandi formati con il soffietto sotto il panno nero 20 x 25. Stavano tutte in un grande armadio nel mio studio. Mi piacevano anche come oggetti, così le ho anche ritratte. Ho dovuto imparare tutte le diverse tecniche per poterle usare, acquisite ma dimenticate al momento dello scatto per concentrarmi sul racconto della fotografia”.
I temi portanti di un racconto sempre in progress si susseguono nelle sale Chagall mettendo in risalto la moda, gli accessori, gli still-life, il design, la natura, le statuine, i collages e le composizioni scenografiche costruite con miniature di edifici e pupazzetti. Più di quarant’anni di fotografia dove i reportage e i ritratti trovano spazio e si completano con racconti dedicati tra i quali spiccano gli abitanti di Filicudi, l’isola amata dalla fotografa e, più di recente, Rocchetta Tanaro e la sua gente monferrina.
Il co-curatore Angelo Ferrillo conosce da molto tempo Maria Vittoria Backhaus e la sua narrazione fotografica: “Immaginifico. È l’aggettivo che mi ha pervaso la prima volta che ho avuto la fortuna di vedere il lavoro di Maria Vittoria. Conoscendola poi a fondo, vivendo la produzione e approfondendo il suo pensiero, mi sono reso conto di quanto la sua fotografia si muova in equilibrio tra visione, creatività e metodo”.
È una mostra che rende omaggio a una mente estrosa con una vena artistica inarrestabile, tutta dedicata al linguaggio della fotografia.
In the spring of 2023, the intervening year of the Casale Monferrato Photography Biennial, the City of Casale and Artistic Director Mariateresa Cerretelli announce the first season of Middle MonFest with a major exhibition dedicated to the brilliant creative personality of Maria Vittoria Backhaus, from her beginnings in the 1970s to the contemporary.
It will be a large anthological exhibition, the result of careful research within a rich and articulated archive where the years of editorial design alternate with an incessant personal study and the images reflect new and countercurrent interpretations made for Fashion, Design and Portraiture, with a phantasmagorical production of Still life and Artistic Constructions that express the versatility of a great Italian protagonist, photographer, Milanese by birth and Piedmontese by adoption.
Parading in the Chagall Rooms of the Castle of Casale Monferrato will be a kaleidoscopic gallery of images, curated by Luciano Bobba and Angelo Ferrillo with the artistic direction of Mariateresa Cerretelli to discover the creativity of the all-around author. Explosive, experimental and revolutionary for the times, driven by an almost maniacal attention to the aesthetics and finesse of photographs and always a step ahead of the classicism of the images reigning in glossy magazines or advertising campaigns from the 1970s to the present, the artist/photographer ranks rightfully among the leading names in Italian photography. With an unprecedented reinterpretation of an immense and extremely rich archive, the exhibition examines the various themes that make up the multifaceted genius of Maria Vittoria Backhaus, who has expressed herself mainly in publishing, in advertisements and in her own personal journey through an observation and focus on a constantly evolving society.
"Artistic creativity unites us, and for me to study the exhibition with Maria Vittoria step by step is like following the parallel line of a natural and spontaneous exchange without barriers in a flow of thought and deep and immediate aesthetic agreements that derive from the common passion for photographic art," says curator Luciano Bobba.
A whirlwind of black and white and color that represents the mirror of a boundless iconography, where Backhaus moves at ease and also reveals an in-depth study of the use of the different cameras he uses.
"I worked," says the author, "with all possible formats of analog cameras, from the Leica format to large formats with the bellows under the 20 x 25 black cloth. They all fit in a big closet in my studio. I also liked them as objects, so I also portrayed them. I had to learn all the different techniques to be able to use them, acquired but forgotten at the time of shooting to focus on the narrative of the photograph."
The supporting themes of an always-in-progress narrative unfold in the Chagall rooms highlighting fashion, accessories, still-life, design, nature, figurines, collages and scenic compositions constructed from miniature buildings and puppets. More than forty years of photography where reportage and portraits find space and are complemented by dedicated stories among which stand out the inhabitants of Filicudi, the photographer's beloved island and, more recently, Rocchetta Tanaro and its Monferrato people.
Co-curator Angelo Ferrillo has long known Maria Vittoria Backhaus and her photographic storytelling: "Imaginative. That is the adjective that pervaded me the first time I was lucky enough to see Maria Vittoria's work. Then getting to know her in depth, experiencing her production and delving into her thinking, I realized how much her photography moves in balance between vision, creativity and method."
It is an exhibition that pays tribute to an imaginative mind with an unstoppable artistic streak, all dedicated to the language of photography.
