Die Fotografien von Henri Cartier-Bresson, die Sam, Lilette und Sébastien der Fondation Pierre Gianadda geschenkt haben, stellen in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein aussergewöhnliches Ensemble dar. Einerseits sind sie repräsentativ für das Werk eines der größten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts, andererseits erzählen sie auf ihre Weise von der tiefen Freundschaft, die Henri Cartier-Bresson und Sam Szafran über dreißig Jahre lang verband. Der berühmte Fotograf lernte den jungen Maler 1972 auf einer Ausstellung über zeitgenössische Kunst in Paris kennen. Henri wandte sich nach und nach von seiner Leica ab und den Bleistiften zu und bat Sam, sein Zeichenlehrer zu werden. Es folgten häufige Austausche und Treffen zwischen den beiden und ihren Familien. Regelmäßig schenkte Henri Cartier-Bresson seinem "intensiven Freund" Sam Szafran sorgfältig ausgewählte Abzüge. Die meisten der 226 geschenkten Fotografien sind mit einer Widmung versehen und zeugen von gegenseitiger Zuneigung und Bewunderung. Nach dem Tod des Fotografen im Jahr 2004 beschloss die Familie Szafran, die Sammlung Leonard und der Fondation Pierre Gianadda zu schenken, als Zeichen der Freundschaft, die sie zusammengeführt hatte. Die Ausstellung, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson organisiert wurde, zeigt bedeutende Werke, die aus den zahlreichen Reisebildern und Künstlerporträts ausgewählt wurden: Wanderungen in den 1930er Jahren, Blicke auf Frankreich, Reisen nach Indien und Mexiko, Face-to-Face mit Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti und vielen anderen.

Les photographies d’Henri Cartier-Bresson offertes par Sam, Lilette et Sébastien à la Fondation Pierre Gianadda constituent un ensemble exceptionnel à plus d’un titre. Elles sont représentatives de l’oeuvre d’un des plus grands photographes du XXe siècle, d’une part, et, d’autre part, racontent à leur manière l’amitié profonde qui a uni Henri Cartier-Bresson et Sam Szafran pendant plus de trente ans. Le célèbre photographe a rencontré le jeune peintre en 1972, lors d’une exposition dédiée à l’art contemporain à Paris. Délaissant peu à peu son Leica au profit des crayons, Henri demande à Sam d’être son professeur de dessin. S’ensuivent de fréquents échanges et rencontres entre eux et avec leurs familles. Régulièrement, Henri Cartier-Bresson offre à son « ami intense » Sam Szafran des tirages choisis avec attention. La plupart des 226 photographies ainsi données sont dédicacées et témoignent d’une affection et admiration mutuelles. Après le décès du photographe, en 2004, la famille Szafran décide d’offrir l’ensemble à Léonard et à la Fondation Pierre Gianadda, en témoignage de l’amitié qui les ont réunis. Organisée avec la collaboration de la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, cette exposition met en valeur des oeuvres majeures, choisies parmi les nombreux clichés de voyages et les portraits d’artistes : pérégrinations des années 1930, regards sur la France, voyages en Inde et au Mexique, face-à-face avec Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, et tant d’autres.

Le fotografie di Henri Cartier-Bresson donate da Sam, Lilette e Sébastien alla Fondazione Pierre Gianadda sono eccezionali sotto più aspetti. Da un lato sono rappresentative dell'opera di uno dei più grandi fotografi del XX secolo, dall'altro raccontano a modo loro la profonda amicizia che ha unito Henri Cartier-Bresson e Sam Szafran per più di trent'anni. Il famoso fotografo incontrò il giovane pittore nel 1972, durante una mostra dedicata all'arte contemporanea a Parigi. Abbandonando gradualmente la Leica a favore delle matite, Henri chiede a Sam di diventare il suo insegnante di disegno. Seguirono frequenti scambi e incontri tra loro e le loro famiglie. Henri Cartier-Bresson regalava regolarmente al suo "intenso amico" Sam Szafran stampe accuratamente selezionate. La maggior parte delle 226 fotografie così donate sono firmate e testimoniano un affetto e un'ammirazione reciproci. Dopo la morte del fotografo, avvenuta nel 2004, la famiglia Szafran decise di offrire il set a Léonard e alla Fondazione Pierre Gianadda, in segno dell'amicizia che li aveva uniti. The photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson donated by Sam, Lilette and Sébastien to the Pierre Gianadda Foundation are exceptional in more ways than one. Gradually abandoning his Leica in favor of pencils, Henri asked Sam to be his drawing teacher. There followed frequent exchanges and meetings between them and their families. Henri Cartier-Bresson regularly offered his "intense friend" Sam Szafran carefully selected prints. Most of the 226 photographs thus donated are autographed and bear witness to a mutual affection and admiration. After the death of the photographer in 2004, the Szafran family decided to offer the set to Léonard and the Pierre Gianadda Foundation as a token of the friendship that had brought them together. Organized with the collaboration of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, this exhibition showcases major works selected from among the many travel photographs and portraits of artists: peregrinations in the 1930s, views of France, trips to India and Mexico, face-to-face encounters with Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and many others.
