Vom 27. Oktober bis 21. Januar 2024 ehrt das Kunsthaus Zürich mit «Ernst Scheidegger. Fotograf» einen der bedeutendsten Schweizer Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Aufnahmen von Alberto Giacometti haben sich ins kollektive Bewusstsein eingebrannt. Zum 100. Geburtstag gibt es nun das überraschende, weniger bekannte Werk des ehemaligen Magnum-Fotografen und Weggefährten vieler Künstler zu entdecken: unter anderem Reportagen und Porträts bedeutender Persönlichkeiten aus der Kunstwelt.
Ernst Scheidegger (1923–2016) war nicht nur einer der bedeutendsten Schweizer Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts und dem Kunsthaus Zürich sowie der Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung eng verbunden. Er war auch Künstler, Verleger und Galerist. Nach einer grossen Ausstellung im Jahr 1992, die all diese Aspekte seines Schaffens würdigte, steht diesmal der Fotograf Scheidegger im Mittelpunkt. Zu entdecken gibt es eine Reihe früher, zum grossen Teil noch unveröffentlichter Aufnahmen sowie eine Auswahl bedeutender Fotografien, die Scheidegger von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern seiner Zeit gemacht hat: Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti und weiteren.
80 SCHWARZ-WEISSE FOTOGRAFIEN VON DEN 1940ER- BIS MITTE 1980ERJAHRE
Damit zeigt die Ausstellung eine wesentliche Entwicklung in Scheideggers Karriere: von der autonomen, ausdrucksvollen Fotografie im Geiste Werner Bischofs zu jener zurückhaltenden, ganz der Würdigung des künstlerischen Schaffens Anderer gewidmeten fotografischen Arbeit, für die er heute berühmt ist. Die im Kabinett im historischen Moser-Bau eingerichtete und von Sammlungskonservator Philippe Büttner kuratierte Schau umfasst rund 80 Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien. Ergänzt werden diese Neuabzüge durch Vintage Prints und eine Reihe von Kunstwerken aus dem Kreis jener Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die Scheidegger in seinen Fotografien würdigte.
Die Ausstellung entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem MASI Lugano und der Stiftung Ernst Scheidegger-Archiv.
Sie wird unterstützt von der Ernst Göhner Stiftung, der Monsol Foundation sowie der Stiftung Erna und Curt Burgauer.

Zeitgleich mit der Ausstellung erscheint im Verlag Scheidegger & Spiess die gebundene Publikation «Ernst Scheidegger. Fotograf» in einer deutschen und einer englischen Ausgabe sowie bei Edizioni Casagrande in einer italienischen. Es ist die erste Veröffentlichung über das Werk von Ernst Scheidegger, die er nicht selbst gestaltet hat. Sie umfasst ca. 248 Seiten und 168 s/w- und 12 Farbabbildungen und enthält Beiträge von den beiden Kuratoren der Ausstellung, Philippe Büttner, Sammlungskonservator des Kunsthaus Zürich und Tobia Bezzola, Direktor des MASI Lugano, der Fotohistorikerin Alessa Widmer und von Helen Grob, der langjährigen Lebensgefährtin Ernst Scheideggers. Du 27 octobre au 21 janvier 2024, le Kunsthaus Zürich rend hommage à "Ernst Scheidegger. Fotograf", l'un des plus grands photographes suisses du 20e siècle. Ses clichés d'Alberto Giacometti sont restés gravés dans la conscience collective. A l'occasion de son centième anniversaire, l'œuvre surprenante et moins connue de cet ancien photographe de Magnum et compagnon de route de nombreux artistes est à découvrir : entre autres, des reportages et des portraits de personnalités importantes du monde de l'art.
Ernst Scheidegger (1923-2016) n'était pas seulement l'un des plus grands photographes suisses du 20e siècle, étroitement lié au Kunsthaus de Zurich et à la Fondation Alberto Giacometti. Il était également artiste, éditeur et galeriste. Après une grande exposition en 1992 qui rendait hommage à tous ces aspects de son œuvre, c'est cette fois le photographe Scheidegger qui est à l'honneur. On y découvrira une série de clichés antérieurs, en grande partie encore inédits, ainsi qu'une sélection de photographies importantes que Scheidegger a prises d'artistes de son temps : Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti et d'autres.
80 PHOTOGRAPHIES EN NOIR ET BLANC DES ANNÉES 1940 AU MILIEU DES ANNÉES 1980
L'exposition montre ainsi une évolution essentielle dans la carrière de Scheidegger : de la photographie autonome et expressive dans l'esprit de Werner Bischof à ce travail photographique réservé, entièrement consacré à l'appréciation du travail artistique d'autrui, pour lequel il est aujourd'hui célèbre. L'exposition, installée dans le cabinet du bâtiment historique Moser et organisée par le conservateur de la collection Philippe Büttner, comprend environ 80 photographies en noir et blanc. Ces nouveaux tirages sont complétés par des impressions vintage et une série d'œuvres d'art provenant du cercle des artistes auxquels Scheidegger a rendu hommage dans ses photographies.
L'exposition a été réalisée en collaboration avec le MASI de Lugano et la fondation Ernst Scheidegger-Archiv.
Elle est soutenue par la Fondation Ernst Göhner, la Monsol Foundation et la Fondation Erna et Curt Burgauer.

In occasione del suo centesimo compleanno, è ora possibile scoprire il sorprendente lavoro meno conosciuto dell'ex fotografo Magnum e compagno di molti artisti: tra cui reportage e ritratti di importanti personalità del mondo dell'arte.
Ernst Scheidegger (1923-2016) non è stato solo uno dei più importanti fotografi svizzeri del XX secolo, strettamente legato alla Kunsthaus Zürich e alla Fondazione Alberto Giacometti. È stato anche artista, editore e gallerista. Dopo la grande mostra del 1992 che ha reso omaggio a tutti questi aspetti del suo lavoro, questa volta l'attenzione si concentra su Scheidegger fotografo. Si possono scoprire numerose fotografie degli esordi, molte delle quali ancora inedite, oltre a una selezione di importanti fotografie che Scheidegger ha scattato ad artisti del suo tempo: Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti e altri.

La mostra mostra così un'evoluzione essenziale nella carriera di Scheidegger: dalla fotografia autonoma ed espressiva nello spirito di Werner Bischof al lavoro fotografico sobrio dedicato interamente all'apprezzamento del lavoro artistico altrui per il quale è oggi famoso. La mostra, allestita nel cabinet dello storico edificio Moser e curata dal curatore della collezione Philippe Büttner, comprende circa 80 fotografie in bianco e nero. Queste nuove stampe sono integrate da stampe d'epoca e da una serie di opere d'arte della cerchia di artisti che Scheidegger ha onorato nelle sue fotografie.
La mostra è stata realizzata in collaborazione con il MASI Lugano e la Fondazione Archivio Ernst Scheidegger.

From October 27 to January 21, 2024, the Kunsthaus Zürich will honor one of the most important Swiss photographers with "Ernst Scheidegger. Photographer" one of the most important Swiss photographers of the 20th century. His photographs of Alberto Giacometti have burned themselves into the collective consciousness. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the surprising, lesser-known work of the former Magnum photographer and companion of many artists can now be discovered: including reportages and portraits of important personalities from the art world.
Ernst Scheidegger (1923-2016) was not only one of the most important Swiss photographers of the 20th century and closely associated with the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Alberto Giacometti Foundation. He was also an artist, publisher and gallery owner. After a major exhibition in 1992 that honored all these aspects of his work, this time the focus is on Scheidegger the photographer. There are a number of early photographs to be discovered, many of them still unpublished, as well as a selection of important photographs that Scheidegger took of artists of his time: Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti and others.
80 BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE 1940S TO THE MID-1980S
The exhibition thus shows an essential development in Scheidegger's career: from autonomous, expressive photography in the spirit of Werner Bischof to the restrained photographic work devoted entirely to the appreciation of the artistic work of others for which he is famous today. The show, set up in the cabinet in the historic Moser Building and curated by collection curator Philippe Büttner, includes some 80 black-and-white photographs. These new prints are complemented by vintage prints and a number of artworks from the circle of those artists whom Scheidegger honored in his photographs.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with MASI Lugano and the Ernst Scheidegger Archive Foundation.
It is supported by the Ernst Göhner Foundation, the Monsol Foundation and the Erna and Curt Burgauer Foundation.

To coincide with the exhibition, the publishing house Scheidegger & Spiess is releasing the hardcover publication "Ernst Scheidegger. Fotograf" is published by Scheidegger & Spiess in a German and an English edition and by Edizioni Casagrande in an Italian edition. It is the first publication on the work of Ernst Scheidegger that he did not design himself. It comprises approximately 248 pages and 168 b/w and 12 color illustrations and includes contributions by the two curators of the exhibition, Philippe Büttner, collection curator of the Kunsthaus Zürich and Tobia Bezzola, director of MASI Lugano, the photo historian Alessa Widmer and by Helen Grob, Ernst Scheidegger's longtime companion. Available in the museum store and in bookshops for approx. CHF 59.
