Parallel zur Retrospektive, die das Musée Maillol Elliott Erwitt widmet, eröffnet die Galerie ihren neuen Ausstellungsraum, das Mezzanin, mit Fotografien des Künstlers.
Elliott Erwitt war ein genialer Reporter der Agentur Magnum, dessen kühne Fotografien humorvoll die Absurdität des menschlichen Daseins unterstreichen und Momente des Durchatmens darstellen.
In seinem letzten Lebensabschnitt ab 2018 richtete er einen neuen Blick auf die Fotografien, die er zu Beginn seiner Karriere, fernab vom Trubel der Auftragslage, aufgenommen hatte. Indem er sich erneut über dieses Meer von Kontaktbögen beugte, konnte Elliott Erwitt der Stimme des jungen Fotografen, der er war, lauschen. Mit dieser Wiederholung stellt er seine Sicht auf die Welt in Frage.
Die meisten seiner Fotografien haben heute den Status von Ikonen, weil sie eine Kraft besitzen, die auf der tiefen menschlichen Hingabe beruht, die sie ausstrahlen. Es ist ein Blick, der sich für die Art und Weise interessiert, wie die Lebenden die Welt bewohnen, mit all dem, was dies an Inkongruenz und Ernsthaftigkeit mit sich bringt, eine Aufmerksamkeit, die zum Nachdenken und zum Verständnis der uns umgebenden Umwelt anregt, mit Humor als Höhepunkt.

Elliott Erwitt, der seine Fotografien selbst als Kommentare zur alltäglichen Absurdität, die sich vor unseren Augen abspielt, definiert, hat durch sein Werk eine unglaubliche Kartografie der menschlichen Emotionen geschaffen. C'est un regard qui s'intéresse à la manière dont les vivants habitent le monde, avec ce que cela comporte d'incongruité et de gravité.Une attention qui donne à penser et à comprendre l'environnement qui nous entoure, avec l'humour comme point d'orgue.
Les photographies inédites, longtemps restées dans l'attente, possèdent quant à elles une force toute singulière qui tient à la mélancolie qui s'en dégage. La langueur qui gagne ces scènes en noir et blanc diffère des images spectaculaires des vedettes de cinéma, de l'humour acerbe des séries canines ou encore des clichés aux accents hollywodiens, auxquels nous avons coutume d'associer l'artiste.
Définissant lui-même ses photographies comme des commentaires de l'absurdité quotidienne qui se joue sous nos yeux, Elliott Erwitt a su créer à travers son oeuvre une incroyable cartographie des émotions humaines. La clé de cette fascination réside peut-être dans le fait que ces images tendent vers cet « idéal insaisissable » dont parle l'artiste comme d’un moment où tout s’assemble.

Le fotografie inedite, attese da tempo, hanno una forza singolare nella malinconia che emanano. Il languore che pervade queste scene in bianco e nero si differenzia dalle immagini spettacolari delle star del cinema, dall'umorismo acre della serie dei cani o dagli scatti in stile hollywoodiano a cui siamo soliti associare l'artista.
Definendo le sue fotografie come commenti sull'assurdità quotidiana che si svolge sotto i nostri occhi, il lavoro di Elliott Erwitt ha creato un'incredibile cartografia delle emozioni umane. Forse la chiave di questo fascino sta nel fatto che queste immagini tendono a quell'"ideale inafferrabile" che l'artista definisce come un momento in cui tutto si unisce.

If most of the artist's photographs today have iconic status, it's because they possess a force linked to the profound human commitment that emanates from them. It's a way of looking at the way the living inhabit the world, with all its incongruity and gravity, a way of thinking about and understanding the environment around us, with humor as the crowning touch.
The previously unpublished photographs, which have long been awaited, have a singular force of their own in the melancholy that emanates from them. The languor that pervades these black-and-white scenes differs from the spectacular images of movie stars, the acerbic humor of the dog series or the Hollywood-style shots with which we usually associate the artist.
Defining his photographs as commentaries on the absurdity of everyday life, Elliott Erwitt has created an incredible cartography of human emotions. Perhaps the key to this fascination lies in the fact that these images tend towards that "elusive ideal" the artist refers to as a moment when everything comes together.
