Als erstes Schweizer Museum widmet die Fondation Beyeler der international renommierten Künstlerin Doris Salcedo (*1958 in Bogotá, Kolumbien) eine umfassende Einzelausstellung, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit ihr und ihrem Studio realisiert wurde.
Doris Salcedos eindrückliche Werke sind das Ergebnis jahrelanger sozialpolitischer Recherchen, materialtechnischer Experimente und künstlerischer Formfindung. Im Zentrum von Salcedos künstlerischem Interesse stehen kulturübergreifende Empfindungen wie Empathie und Trauer, sowie der Umgang mit dem ewigen Kreislauf von Vergessen und Erinnern im Zusammenhang gewaltsamer Konflikte.
Obwohl ihre Werke oft konkrete Ereignisse als Entstehungshintergrund haben, besitzen sie universale Gültigkeit und entfalten eine Wirkung, der man sich nicht zu entziehen vermag. Statt plakativer Darstellungen sucht Salcedo nach den gemeinsamen Empfindungen der Betrachtenden. Salcedo arbeitet mit so unterschiedlichen Materialien wie Stein und Zement, Holzmöbel, Nadeln, Kleidungsstücke, Seide, Gras, Wasser, Blütenblätter oder Haare. Durch deren außergewöhnliche Verwandlung gelingt es der Künstlerin, «Gewalt ohne Gewalt darzustellen» und Schmerz spürbar zu machen, ohne ihn explizit zu zeigen.
Die rund 100 ausgestellten Arbeiten aus acht zentralen Werkreihen beinhalten Schlüsselwerke aus Museen und Privatsammlungen und ermöglichen einen umfassenden Einblick in das Schaffen der bedeutenden Künstlerin.
La Fondation Beyeler est le premier musée en Suisse à consacrer une importante exposition individuelle à l’artiste de renommée internationale Doris Salcedo (*1958 à Bogota, Colombie), réalisée en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste elle-même et son studio.
Les oeuvres saisissantes de Doris Salcedo sont le résultat de multiples années de recherches socio-politiques, d’expérimentation de techniques et de matériaux, et de quête de forme artistique. Son intérêt porte sur des ressentis transculturels tels l’empathie et le deuil, de même que sur notre manière d’appréhender le cycle sans cesse répété de l’oubli et du souvenir dans le contexte de conflits violents. Les oeuvres de Salcedo ont souvent pour toile de fond des événements spécifiques mais leur portée et leur résonance sont universelles et imparables. Au lieu de représentations simplistes, Salcedo quête les ressentis qui nous sont communs. Salcedo travaille avec une grande diversité de matériaux : pierre et ciment, meubles en bois, aiguilles, vêtements, soie, herbe, eau, pétales ou cheveux. Grâce à leur transformation inhabituelle, Salcedo parvient à « représenter la violence sans violence » et à rendre la douleur et la souffrance tangibles sans les montrer de manière explicite.
Les quelque 100 oeuvres exposées, tirées de huit importantes séries d’oeuvres, comprennent des pièces clé en provenance de musées et de collections privées, et offrent un aperçu très complet du travail de cette artiste majeure.
Le imponenti opere di Doris Salcedo sono il risultato di anni di ricerca socio-politica, di esperimenti materiali e di ricerca di forme artistiche. Al centro dell'interesse artistico di Salcedo ci sono sentimenti interculturali come l'empatia e il dolore, oltre a trattare l'eterno ciclo del dimenticare e del ricordare nel contesto di conflitti violenti.
Sebbene le sue opere abbiano spesso come sfondo eventi concreti, hanno una validità universale e dispiegano un effetto a cui non si può sfuggire. Invece di rappresentazioni eclatanti, Salcedo cerca le sensazioni comuni degli spettatori. Salcedo lavora con materiali diversi come pietra e cemento, mobili di legno, aghi, pezzi di vestiti, seta, erba, acqua, petali o capelli. Attraverso la loro straordinaria trasformazione, l'artista riesce a "rappresentare la violenza senza violenza" e a rendere palpabile il dolore senza mostrarlo esplicitamente.
Le circa 100 opere esposte, appartenenti a otto serie centrali, comprendono lavori chiave provenienti da musei e collezioni private e offrono una visione completa del lavoro di questo importante artista.
The Fondation Beyeler is the first museum in Switzerland to devote a comprehensive solo exhibition to internationally acclaimed artist Doris Salcedo (*1958 in Bogotá, Colombia), conceived in close collaboration with the artist herself and her studio.
Doris Salcedo’s compelling works are the outcome of years of socio-political research, experimentation with techniques and materials, and questing for artistic form. Salcedo’s interest centres on cross-cultural emotions and sensations such as empathy and grief, as well as our handling of the ever-repeating cycle of forgetting and remembering in the context of violent conflicts. Even though her works often take specific events as their starting point, their reach is universal and their impact inescapable. Rather than simplistic depictions, Salcedo searches for viewers’ shared emotions and sensations. Salcedo works with a wide range of materials: stone and cement, wooden furniture, needles, items of clothing, silk, grass, water, flower petals or hair. Her unusual transformation of these materials allows her to «represent violence without violence» and to make pain and suffering palpable without showing them explicitly.
The approximately 100 works on display, from eight major series of works, comprise key pieces on loan from museums and private collections, and provide a comprehensive insight into the practice of this significant artist.
