Dongkyun Vak: «Heatwave» – A New Gaze 3: Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize

Der südkoreanische Künstler Dongkyun Vak (*1992) wurde als dritter Künstler mit dem internationalen Art Vontobel Förderpreis ausgezeichnet und wird im Mai mit einer Einzelausstellung – seiner ersten in Europa – in den Räumlichkeiten des Schweizer Investmenthauses in Zürich geehrt. Der Art Vontobel Förderpreis für junge zeitgenössische Fotografie ist mit CHF 20'000 dotiert und gilt als Sprungbrett für aufstrebende Talente. Wallpaper*, eines der global führenden Magazine für Architektur, Design und Kunst, das alljährlich junge, aufstrebende Kreative aus aller Welt vorstellt, kürte Dongkyun Vak vor kurzem zu einem der «22 Rising Stars of 2022».
Dongkyun Vak beleuchtet in seiner Arbeit das Spannungsfeld zwischen Natur und Kultur, Mensch und Technologie im Anthropozän und fragt sich dabei, wer oder was in welcher Form für die lebensstiftenden Ökosysteme unseres Planeten verantwortlich ist. Der junge Künstler geht dabei von der Annahme aus, dass der Mensch nicht mehr nur ein kleiner Teil einer grossen Natur, sondern der wichtigste Einflussfaktor auf die biologischen, geologischen und atmosphärischen Prozesse der Erde geworden ist. Die daraus resultierenden Problematiken sind bekannt: Erderwärmung, Klimaungleichgewicht, Verlust von Lebensräumen und Biodiversität. Vak begnügt sich nun nicht damit, die Zerstörungen der Erde fotografisch festzuhalten. Stattdessen baut er sein Studio in einen visuellen Denkraum um. Er wendet sich ab vom einzelnen Ereignis und rückt die Bedeutung der Technologie für den historischen Wendepunkt ins Zentrum seiner Arbeit. So entstehen stark stilisierte Objektwelten, die sowohl das Verführerische wie auch das Befremdliche der von neuen Technologien geprägten Umwelt widerspiegeln. Vak erkundet in seiner Ausstellung eine Geschichte, in der sich die Technologie langsam zu einem eigenen Organismus, zu einem eigenen Wesen entwickelt und positioniert so die Frage nach der Verantwortung neu.
Das Thema «Verantwortlichkeit im Zeichen des Anthropozän» stand im Zentrum der Ausschreibung für «A New Gaze 3: Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize». Junge Fotograf:innen aus Südostasien wurden eingeladen, einen Projektvorschlag zum Thema einzureichen. Aus den von Fachleuten nominierten Kandidat:innen setzte sich bei der Jury die Arbeit des jungen Südkoreaners Dongkyun Vak durch – wegen seiner eigenwilligen Interpretation des Themas und aufgrund seiner fotografischen Qualität. Der Vontobel Förderpreis wird alle zwei Jahre verliehen und konzentriert sich bei jeder Ausgabe auf eine andere Region und ein neues Thema. Aufgrund Covid-bedingter Verschiebungen findet die Ausstellung nun ein Jahr später als geplant statt.

L’artiste sud-coréen Dongkyun Vak (*1992) est le troisième artiste à recevoir le prix international de la photo Vontobel. En mai, une exposition personnelle – sa première en Europe – mettra son travail à l’honneur dans les locaux zurichois de la société d’investissement suisse. Doté de 20 000 francs suisses, le prix Vontobel pour la jeune photographie contemporaine est un tremplin pour les talents prometteurs. Dongkyun Vak fait partie de la liste annuelle des 22 jeunes talents à surveiller dans le monde, établie par Wallpaper*, l’un des magazines d’architecture, art et design les plus en vue.
Dans son travail, Dongkyun Vak met en lumière les tensions entre nature et culture, entre l’humain et la technologie dans l’anthropocène tout en se demandant qui est responsable des écosystèmes vitaux de notre planète. Ce jeune artiste part de l’hypothèse que l’humain n’est plus seulement une petite partie d’une vaste nature, mais qu’il est devenu le principal déterminant des processus biologiques, géologiques et atmosphériques sur terre. Les problèmes qui en résultent sont bien connus: réchauffement et dérèglement climatiques, perte d’habitats et de biodiversité. Vak ne se contente pas de capter des images de la destruction de notre planète: il transforme son studio en un espace de réflexion visuelle. Par delà les événements isolés, il s’intéresse à l’importance de la technologie dans le tournant historique actuel. Il crée ainsi des univers stylisés, qui reflètent à la fois le côté séduisant et les aspects angoissants de notre environnement, façonné par les nouvelles technologies. Dans son exposition, Vak montre comment la technologie devient un acteur à part entière, soulevant la question de la responsabilité.
Le thème «La responsabilité à l’ère de l’anthropocène» était le thème du concours «A New Gaze 3: Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize». De jeunes photographes d’Asie du Sud-Est ont été invités à soumettre un projet sur ce thème. Parmi les candidats présélectionnés par un jury d’experts, le jeune sud-coréen Dongkyun Vak s’est distingué par son interprétation originale du sujet et la qualité de sa photographie. Décerné tous les deux ans, le prix de la photo Vontobel porte chaque fois sur une région et un thème différent. En raison de la pandémie de coronavirus, cette exposition a lieu avec un an de retard.
Elle est accompagnée d’un catalogue (allemand/anglais) comportant des contributions d’Urs Stahel, Georgina Casparis et Buhm Soon Park.
L’artista sudcoreano Dongkyun Vak (*1992), il terzo artista a vincere il premio internazionale per la fotografia Vontobel, sarà celebrato a maggio con una mostra personale – la sua prima in Europa – allestita nei locali della società di investimento svizzera di Zurigo. La borsa di studio Vontobel di CHF 20 000 è stata istituita per promuovere la giovane fotografia contemporanea ed è considerata un trampolino di lancio per giovani talenti. Dongkyun Vak è stato selezionato da Wallpaper*, la rivista di architettura, design e arte più importante al mondo, per la serie annuale che presenta 22 giovani talenti di tutto il mondo da tenere d’occhio.
Nel suo lavoro Dongkyun Vak esamina il conflitto tra natura e cultura, uomo e tecnologia nell’antropocene, interrogandosi su chi o cosa, e in quale forma, sia responsabile degli ecosistemi essenziali per la vita del nostro pianeta. Il giovane artista parte dal presupposto che l’uomo non sia più solo una piccola parte della grande natura, ma che sia diventato il principale fattore che influenza i processi biologici, geologici e atmosferici della Terra. Le problematiche che ne derivano sono ormai note: riscaldamento globale, squilibri climatici, perdita di habitat e biodiversità. Vak non si accontenta di catturare le immagini della distruzione della Terra. Piuttosto trasforma il proprio studio in uno spazio di riflessione virtuale. Allontanandosi dal singolo evento, egli mette al centro del proprio lavoro l’importanza della tecnologia per la svolta storica. Nascono così mondi di oggetti stilizzati, che riflettono l’aspetto sia seducente che sconcertante dell’ambiente influenzato dalle nuove tecnologie. Nella sua mostra, Vak esplora una storia in cui la tecnologia diventa poco a poco un organismo a sé, un’entità a se stante, e riposiziona in tal modo la domanda riguardo alla responsabilità.
La «Responsabilità nell’era dell’antropocene» era il tema su cui era incentrato il concorso di «A New Gaze 3: Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize». Giovani fotografe e fotografi dell’Asia sud-orientale sono stati invitati a presentare una proposta di progetto sul tema. Tra le candidate e i candidati nominati da esperti si è imposto il lavoro del giovane sudcoreano Dongkyun Vak – per la sua interpretazione originale del tema e la sua qualità fotografica. Il premio per giovani talenti Vontobel viene conferito ogni due anni e a ogni edizione si concentra su una diversa regione e un nuovo tema. A causa dei rinvii dovuti al Covid, l’evento ora si svolge un anno dopo la data originariamente prevista.

South Korean artist Dongkyun Vak (*1992) is the third artist to be awarded the international Art Vontobel photography sponsorship prize A New Gaze and will be honored with a solo exhibition—his first in Europe—at the Swiss investment firm's premises in Zurich in May. Dedicated to emerging contemporary photography, A New Gaze is endowed with CHF 20,000 and regarded as a springboard for young talent. Dongkyun Vak was named one of the 22 Rising Stars for 2022 by Wallpaper*, one of the world's leading magazines for architecture, design, and art, in its annual series on noteworthy emerging creatives from around the world.
In his work, Dongkyun Vak explores the tension between nature and culture, man, and technology in the Anthropocene, asking himself who or what is responsible for the life-giving ecosystems of our planet and in what form. The young artist starts from the assumption that man is no longer just a small part of a bigger natural world but has become the most important factor influencing the biological, geological, and atmospheric processes of the earth. The resulting problems are well known: global warming, climate imbalance, and loss of habitats and biodiversity. Vak’s aim however, is not to simply photograph and docu-ment the destruction of our planet. Instead, he turns inwards, building something akin to a mind space in his studio, turning away from the event and instead investigates the structure of the situation. In doing so, the artist places the significance of technology for this historical turning point at the centre of his work. This results in a highly stylized world of objects that reflects both the seductiveness and disconcerting nature of the environment shaped by new technologies. Vak's exhibition explores a history in which technology slowly evolves into its own organism, its own being, thus repositioning the question of responsibility.
The theme of "Responsibility in the Anthropocene age" was central to the call for entries for A New Gaze 3: Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize. Young photographers from Southeast Asia were invited to submit a project proposal on the theme. Out of the numerous candidates nominated by experts, the young South Korean Dongkyun Vak impressed the jury with both his investigative approach and the high quality of his contemplative visual language. The Art Vontobel sponsorship prize is awarded every two years, with each edition focusing on a different region and a new theme. Due to COVID-related restrictions, the exhibition is now taking place one year later than planned.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with contributions (D/E) by Urs Stahel, Georgina Casparis, and Buhm Soon Park.
