Thomas Ruff (*1958) und James Welling (*1951) gehören zu den bekanntesten Fotokünstlern der Gegenwart. In ihren Werken erforschen sie die Bedingungen der visuellen Wahrnehmung, auch in Bezug auf unseren Einsatz der fotografischen Apparatur, und die Konditionierung unserer Sicht auf die Welt durch fotografische Bilder. Die Ausstellung »Dark Matter. Thomas Ruff, James Welling« konzentriert sich auf Arbeiten, die dem fotografischen Bild neue Möglichkeiten abringen und unser Vorstellungsvermögen erweitern. Wir nehmen unsere Umwelt subjektiv wahr, wir sehen und fühlen sie vor dem Hintergrund dessen, was wir in tradierten Bildern und Wörtern fassen und verstehen können. Rund achtzig Prozent der Materie im Universum bestehen aus einem Stoff, den wir nicht kennen: Dunkle Materie. Verhält es sich ähnlich mit dem fotografischen Bild? Verbirgt es mehr, als es zeigt?
Die Ausstellung wird gefördert durch die Stiftung der Sparkasse Bielefeld und die LWL-Kulturstiftung.
Thomas Ruff (*1958) et James Welling (*1951) comptent parmi les artistes photographes les plus connus de notre époque. Dans leurs œuvres, ils explorent les conditions de la perception visuelle, notamment en ce qui concerne notre utilisation de l'appareil photographique, et le conditionnement de notre vision du monde par les visuels photographiques. L'exposition "Dark Matter. Thomas Ruff, James Welling" se concentre sur des travaux qui apportent de nouvelles possibilités au visuel photographique et élargissent notre capacité d'imagination. Nous percevons notre environnement de manière subjective, nous le voyons et le ressentons sur fond de ce que nous pouvons saisir et comprendre dans des visuels et des mots traditionnels. Environ quatre-vingt pour cent de la matière dans l'univers est composée d'une substance que nous ne connaissons pas : La matière noire. En est-il de même pour le visuel photographique ? Cache-t-elle plus qu'elle ne montre ?

Nelle loro opere esplorano le condizioni della percezione visiva, anche in relazione all'uso dell'apparecchio fotografico, e il condizionamento della nostra visione del mondo attraverso le immagini fotografiche. La mostra "Materia oscura. Thomas Ruff, James Welling" si concentra su opere che strappano nuove possibilità all'immagine fotografica e ampliano i nostri poteri di immaginazione. Percepiamo il nostro ambiente in modo soggettivo, lo vediamo e lo sentiamo sullo sfondo di ciò che possiamo afferrare e comprendere con immagini e parole tradizionali. Circa l'80% della materia dell'universo è costituito da una sostanza che non conosciamo: La materia oscura. È simile all'immagine fotografica? Nasconde più di quanto mostri?

Thomas Ruff (*1958) and James Welling (*1951) are among the best-known photographic artists of the present day. In their works they explore the conditions of visual perception, also in relation to our use of the photographic apparatus, and the conditioning of our view of the world through photographic images. The exhibition "Dark Matter. Thomas Ruff, James Welling" focuses on works that wrest new possibilities from the photographic image and expand our imagination. We perceive our environment subjectively, we see and feel it against the background of what we can grasp and understand in traditional images and words. About eighty percent of the matter in the universe consists of a substance we do not know: Dark Matter. Is it similar with the photographic image? Does it hide more than it shows?
