Zehn Jahre lang haben die Künstler Nicolas Giraud und Bertrand Stofleth ein bescheidenes, aber beispielhaftes Gebiet durchstreift, eine Folge von Tälern, die die Loire mit der Rhône verbinden und die eine der Wiegen der industriellen Revolution waren. La Vallée ist das Ergebnis dieses groß angelegten Projekts der fotografischen Erfassung, bei dem die Bilder wie Zeitschnitte wirken. Ihre Rahmen bringen zeitlich weit entfernte Objekte zusammen, um sie im Bild zu vereinen. La Vallée entfaltet sich so als ein Spannungsfeld von Elementen, die die Landschaft formen und von ihrer Geschichte zeugen.
Neben La Vallée zeigt die Ausstellung zwei weitere aktuelle Einzelprojekte, New sites of technology und Recoller la Montagne, die die gemeinsame Reflexion fortsetzen. Sie zeigen die Echos von La Vallée in der Arbeit jedes einzelnen Künstlers.
La Vallée ist das Ergebnis einer langen Untersuchung. Sie produziert in jedem Bild und zwischen den Bildern, Schicht für Schicht, eine visuelle Archäologie unserer Moderne. Die Ausstellung vereint eine Auswahl von Bildern, die den auftauchenden Teil eines größeren Korpus darstellen. Dank einer Augmented-Reality-Vorrichtung funktioniert jede der Fotografien wie eine Schnittstelle und bietet Zugang zu Bildserien oder Texten, die bei mehreren Autoren und Experten in Auftrag gegeben wurden. Die Erkundung dieser Elemente ermöglicht den Zugang zu den verschiedenen Schichten des Projekts, dem Ergebnis einer zehnjährigen Vermessung und Erhebung. Dabei wird nicht nur der Raum, sondern auch die Zeit beleuchtet, der ständige Kampf zwischen weitreichenden Umwälzungen und den Widerstandsgesten des Territoriums und seiner Bewohner.
Das Valley begleitet den Blick vom Römischen Reich bis zur "Start-up Nation". Es macht die materielle Anhäufung der Geschichte bis zum Glühen der Gegenwart sichtbar. Dieser zeitgenössische Moment ist der Ausgangspunkt für zwei weitere Projekte, die wie eine Fortsetzung davon sind. Recoller la Montagne von Bertrand Stofleth erforscht den Zusammenbruch der Landschaft und das Ausmaß einer instabil gewordenen Umwelt. New sites of technology von Nicolas Giraud beobachtet den wachsenden Einfluss einer Technologie, die uns mit Bildern füttert, sich aber gleichzeitig jeder Darstellung entzieht.
Durant dix ans, les artistes Nicolas Giraud et Bertrand Stofleth ont arpenté un territoire modeste mais exemplaire, une succession de vallées qui relient la Loire au Rhône et qui furent l’un des berceaux de la révolution industrielle. La Vallée est le résultat de ce vaste projet de captation photographique où les images opèrent comme des coupes temporelles. Leurs cadres rassemblent des objets éloignés dans le temps pour les réunir dans l’image. La Vallée se déploie ainsi comme une mise en tension des éléments qui forment le paysage et témoignent de son histoire.
En regard de La Vallée, l’exposition présente deux autres projets individuels récents, New sites of technology et Recoller la Montagne, qui prolongent la reflexion menée en commun. Ils donnent à voir les échos de La Vallée dans la démarche de chacun des deux artistes.
La Vallée est l’aboutissement d’une longue enquête. Elle produit, dans chaque image et entre les images, strate après strate, une archéologie visuelle de notre modernité. L’exposition réunit une sélection d’images, partie émergée d’un plus vaste corpus. Grâce à un dispositif de réalité augmentée, chacune des photographies fonctionne comme une interface et donne accès à des séries d’images ou à des textes commandés à plusieurs auteurs et experts. L’exploration de ces éléments permet d’accéder aux différentes strates du projet, au résultat de dix années d’arpentage et de relevés. Autant que l’espace, c’est le temps qui est alors mis en lumière, la lutte constante entre des bouleversements de grande ampleur et les gestes de résistance du territoire et de ses occupants.
La Vallée accompagne le regard depuis l’Empire romain jusqu’à la « start-up nation ». Elle rend visible l’accumulation matérielle de l’Histoire jusqu’à l’incandescence du présent. Ce moment contemporain est le point de départ de deux autres projets qui en sont comme des prolongements. Recoller la Montagne de Bertrand Stofleth explore l’effondrement du paysage et l’ampleur d’un environnement devenu instable. New sites of technology de Nicolas Giraud observe l’emprise grandissante d’une technologie qui nous nourrit d’image mais échappe en même temps à toute représentation.

La Vallée è il risultato di questo vasto progetto fotografico in cui le immagini funzionano come fette di tempo. Le loro cornici riuniscono oggetti lontani nel tempo per riunirli nell'immagine. La Valle si sviluppa quindi come una tensione tra gli elementi che formano il paesaggio e testimoniano la sua storia.
Oltre a The Valley, la mostra presenta altri due recenti progetti individuali, New sites of technology e Recoller la Montagne, che ampliano la riflessione comune. Essi mostrano gli echi di The Valley nell'approccio di ciascuno dei due artisti.
La Valle è il risultato di una lunga indagine. Produce, in ogni immagine e tra le immagini, strato dopo strato, un'archeologia visiva della nostra modernità. La mostra riunisce una selezione di immagini, parte emergente di un corpus più ampio. Grazie a un dispositivo di realtà aumentata, ciascuna delle fotografie funziona come un'interfaccia e dà accesso a serie di immagini o testi commissionati a diversi autori ed esperti. L'esplorazione di questi elementi permette di accedere ai diversi strati del progetto, frutto di dieci anni di rilievi e misurazioni. Oltre allo spazio, è il tempo a essere messo in evidenza, la lotta costante tra gli sconvolgimenti su larga scala e i gesti di resistenza del territorio e dei suoi occupanti.
La Valle accompagna lo spettatore dall'Impero romano alla "nazione start-up". Rende visibile l'accumulo materiale della storia fino all'incandescenza del presente. Questo momento contemporaneo è il punto di partenza per altri due progetti che ne sono come un'estensione. Recoller la Montagne di Bertrand Stofleth esplora il collasso del paesaggio e l'estensione di un ambiente divenuto instabile. New sites of technology di Nicolas Giraud osserva la crescente presa di una tecnologia che ci nutre di immagini ma che allo stesso tempo sfugge a qualsiasi rappresentazione.
For ten years, artists Nicolas Giraud and Bertrand Stofleth surveyed a modest but exemplary territory, a succession of valleys that link the Loire to the Rhone and that were one of the cradles of the industrial revolution. La Vallée is the result of this vast photographic project in which the images operate like temporal cuts. Their frames bring together objects that are distant in time to reunite them in the image. The Valley thus unfolds as a tension between the elements that form the landscape and bear witness to its history.
In addition to La Vallée, the exhibition presents two other recent individual projects, New sites of technology and Recoller la Montagne, which extend the reflexion carried out in common. They show the echoes of The Valley in the approach of each of the two artists.
The Valley is the result of a long investigation. It produces, in each image and between images, layer after layer, a visual archaeology of our modernity. The exhibition brings together a selection of images, the emerging part of a larger corpus. Thanks to an augmented reality device, each of the photographs functions as an interface and gives access to series of images or texts commissioned from several authors and experts. The exploration of these elements allows access to the different strata of the project, to the result of ten years of surveying. As much as space, it is time that is highlighted, the constant struggle between large-scale upheavals and the gestures of resistance of the territory and its occupants.
The Valley accompanies the viewer from the Roman Empire to the "start-up nation". It makes visible the material accumulation of History until the incandescence of the present. This contemporary moment is the starting point for two other projects that are like extensions of it. Recoller la Montagne by Bertrand Stofleth explores the collapse of the landscape and the extent of an environment that has become unstable. Nicolas Giraud's New sites of technology observes the growing influence of a technology that feeds us with images but at the same time escapes all representation.
