Mit »Beyond Solitude« zeigt die BBA Gallery die erste Einzelausstellung von Giulietta Coates mit Arbeiten aus den letzten vier Jahren. Die monochromen Landschaftsfotografien thematisieren die Beziehung der Künstlerin zur Schönheit der Natur, zu ihrer als schmerzhaft empfundenen Andersartigkeit sowie zur Unmöglichkeit, mit ihr eins zu werden. Die melancholischen Aufnahmen drücken sowohl die Sehnsucht nach dem Unerreichbaren aus, wie auch Melancholie, begründet in dem Wunsch nach anderen Gegebenheiten.
Die Fotografien, entstanden bei einsamen Spaziergängen mit dem Hund, verweisen auf die Schönheit der Natur und repräsentieren die Zwiegespräche der Künstlerin mit der Landschaft, die sie unmittelbar umgibt. Einzelne Motive wie Wasserlachen, sumpfige Felder und Baumstümpfe stehen für weitergefasste Narrative über Tod, Schönheit und Sehnsucht, die sich in den Naturerscheinungen verbinden. Coates begann, das Medium der Fotografie zu nutzen, als sie ihr Leben in die abgelgegenen Haut Provence in Frankreich verlegte. Fotografie wird auf der glatten Oberfläche des Papiers reproduziert, was die Sehnsucht nach dem Abgebildeten weckt, dabei jedoch nichts Greifbares erschafft. Mit der Fotografie hat die Künstlerin ein passendes Medium gefunden, um die Kluft zwischen sich und der absoluten Andersartigkeit der Schönheit der Natur zu überwinden. Die fragmentierten Aufnahmen – teilweise ergänzt durch Holzstrukturen und somit konzeptionell um materielle Aspekte erweiteret – stellen gleichsam in einer Verrätselung der Wahrnehmung die natürlichen Welt in ganz eigenen Perspektiven dar. Die dichten Bildkonstruktionen erzeugen eine Beziehung zur Andersartigkeit der natürlichen Welt und so ein erweitertes Bewusstsein, das individuelle Grenzen überwindet.
Giulietta Coates wurde 1959 in England geboren. Die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet seit 15 Jahren in der Haute Provence, Frankreich. Sie verfogt – auch inspiriert durch ihr Studium der Druckgrafik am Royal College of Art – einen zeichnerischen, sinnlich-materiellen Ansatz. Coates hat ihre Arbeiten europaweit in zahlreichen Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen ausgestellt. Ihre Werke der letzten vierzig Jahre – Holzschnitte, Zeichnungen und Gemälde – befinden sich in Sammlungen auf der ganzen Welt. Die BBA Gallery vertritt Giulietta Coates seit 2016.
Avec "Beyond Solitude", la BBA Gallery présente la première exposition individuelle de Giulietta Coates avec des travaux réalisés au cours des quatre dernières années. Les photographies monochromes de paysages thématisent la relation de l'artiste à la beauté de la nature, à sa différence ressentie comme douloureuse ainsi qu'à l'impossibilité de ne faire qu'un avec elle. Les clichés mélancoliques expriment à la fois la nostalgie de l'inaccessible et la mélancolie justifiée par le désir d'autres réalités.
Les photographies, prises lors de promenades solitaires avec le chien, renvoient à la beauté de la nature et représentent les dialogues de l'artiste avec le paysage qui l'entoure directement. Certains motifs, comme les flaques d'eau, les champs marécageux et les souches d'arbres, représentent des récits plus larges sur la mort, la beauté et la nostalgie, qui se combinent dans les phénomènes naturels. Coates a commencé à utiliser le médium de la photographie lorsqu'elle a déménagé sa vie dans la région éloignée du Haut Provence en France. La photographie est reproduite sur la surface lisse du papier, ce qui éveille la nostalgie de la chose représentée, mais ne crée rien de tangible. Avec la photographie, l'artiste a trouvé un médium approprié pour combler le fossé entre elle-même et l'altérité absolue de la beauté de la nature. Les prises de vue fragmentées - parfois complétées par des structures en bois et donc élargies conceptuellement à des aspects matériels - transmettent pour ainsi dire, dans un trouble de la perception, le monde naturel dans des perspectives très particulières. Les constructions d'images denses créent une relation avec l'altérité du monde naturel et ainsi une conscience élargie qui dépasse les frontières individuelles.
Giulietta Coates est née en Angleterre en 1959. L'artiste vit et travaille depuis 15 ans en Haute Provence, en France. Inspirée par ses études de gravure au Royal College of Art, elle adopte une approche sensuelle et matérielle du dessin. Coates a exposé son travail dans de nombreuses expositions collectives et individuelles à travers l'Europe. Ses œuvres des quarante dernières années - gravures sur bois, dessins et peintures - se trouvent dans des collections du monde entier. La BBA Gallery représente Giulietta Coates depuis 2016.
Con "Beyond Solitude", la BBA Gallery presenta la prima mostra personale di Giulietta Coates con opere degli ultimi quattro anni. Le fotografie monocromatiche di paesaggio tematizzano il rapporto dell'artista con la bellezza della natura, con la sua alterità, percepita come dolorosa, e con l'impossibilità di diventare un tutt'uno con essa. Le fotografie malinconiche esprimono sia l'anelito verso l'irraggiungibile sia la malinconia, fondata sul desiderio di altre realtà.
Le fotografie, scattate durante passeggiate solitarie con il cane, fanno riferimento alla bellezza della natura e rappresentano il dialogo dell'artista con il paesaggio che la circonda immediatamente. Motivi individuali come pozze d'acqua, campi paludosi e ceppi d'albero rappresentano narrazioni più ampie di morte, bellezza e desiderio che si combinano nei fenomeni naturali. Coates ha iniziato a utilizzare il mezzo fotografico quando si è trasferita nella remota Haut Provence in Francia. La fotografia viene riprodotta sulla superficie liscia della carta, evocando il desiderio di ciò che è raffigurato, ma non creando nulla di tangibile. Nella fotografia, l'artista ha trovato un mezzo adatto a colmare il divario tra lei e l'assoluta alterità della bellezza della natura. Le fotografie frammentate - in parte integrate da strutture in legno e quindi concettualmente ampliate da aspetti materiali - presentano il mondo naturale in prospettive molto singolari, in una sorta di perplessità percettiva. Le dense costruzioni pittoriche creano un rapporto con l'alterità del mondo naturale e quindi una coscienza espansa che trascende i confini individuali.
Giulietta Coates è nata in Inghilterra nel 1959. Da 15 anni l'artista vive e lavora in Alta Provenza, in Francia. Ispirata dai suoi studi di stampa al Royal College of Art, persegue un approccio sensuale e materico basato sul disegno. Coates ha esposto le sue opere in numerose mostre collettive e personali in tutta Europa. I suoi lavori degli ultimi quarant'anni - xilografie, disegni e dipinti - sono conservati in collezioni di tutto il mondo. BBA Gallery rappresenta Giulietta Coates dal 2016.
‘Beyond Solitude’ is the debut solo show of artist Giulietta Coates at BBA Gallery, Berlin. The exhibition brings together works from the last 4 years. At the core of the monochrome landscape photographs is her relationship to the beauty of nature: its painful otherness and the impossibility of becoming one with it. The melancholic photographs express a longing for what is unreachable and hold a certain nostalgia for things to be otherwise.
Photographs taken during walks with her dog are observations of nature’s beauty, and intimate conversations with the immediate landscape that surrounds the artist. Individual motifs such as puddles, marshy fields and tree stumps stand for larger narratives of death, beauty, nostalgia and longing, all of which are interconnected in nature. Coates turned to photography as a solution to living in a remote region of France. The constraint of photography as a smooth, surface medium sets up a longing for what it represents yet delivers nothing. The artist uses photography to overcome the gulf between herself and the total otherness of nature’s beauty. Presented on the outermost surface of wooden structures, the fragmented photographs are perceptual puzzles where corners of the natural world appear to the viewer from odd angles. The rich layers of imagery speak of our relationship to nature and connect us to a consciousness outside of our own.
Giulietta Coates (*1959, England) has been living and working in Haute Provence, France for the past 15 years. She studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art and comes from a tradition of drawing and handling materials. Coates has been part of multiple group and solo exhibitions across Europe and her works from the past 40 years - woodcuts, drawings, paintings - are in collections around the world. BBA Gallery has been representing Giulietta Coates since 2016.
