Foam präsentiert The Beautiful and the Sinister, eine Ausstellung eines der von der Kritik am meisten gefeierten britischen Fotografen, Bill Brandt (1904-1983). Die Ausstellung zeigt die enge Beziehung zwischen der Kunst der europäischen Avantgarde, insbesondere dem Surrealismus, und seinem eigenen Werk. Von seinen ersten Fotografien aus den dreißiger Jahren, die er noch als Amateur machte, bis hin zu seinen Porträts und Aktaufnahmen der späteren Jahre zeigt Brandt eine ständige Faszination für das Fremde. Hermann Wilhelm Brandt (1904-1983) wurde als Sohn eines britischen Vaters und einer deutschen Mutter in Deutschland geboren. Im Jahr 1931 siedelte er nach England über, wo er zunächst für seine Fotografien der britischen Gesellschaft bekannt wurde. Später machte er verzerrte Aktaufnahmen, Porträts berühmter Künstler und Landschaften. Seine Werke enthalten wichtige soziale Kommentare und eine poetische Resonanz. Seine Landschaften und Akte sind dynamisch und kraftvoll, wobei er oft Weitwinkelobjektive verwendet, um verzerrte Kompositionen zu schaffen. Bill Brandt gilt weithin als einer der wichtigsten britischen Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Foam presents The Beautiful and the Sinister, an exhibition by one of the most critically acclaimed British photographers, Bill Brandt (1904- 1983). The exhibition demonstrates the close relationship between the art of the European avant-garde, in particular Surrealism, and his own work. From his earliest photographs in the nineteen-thirties, taken when he was still an amateur, to his portraits and nudes in later years, Brandt shows a permanent fascination with the strange. Departing from the notion that the sinister (more accurately in German: 'unheimlich') is an ever-present element of Brandt’s photographs, the exhibition shows how this characteristic manifests itself in both his photojournalistic and artistic photography.
