Bevor Stanley Kubrick zum weltbekannten Regisseur der Filme 2001: Odyssee im Weltraum oder Uhrwerk Orange wird, ist er im Auftrag der amerikanischen Zeitschrift Look mit seiner Kamera auf den Straßen New Yorks unterwegs. Indem er seine Heimatstadt durch die Linse betrachtet, lehrt ihn die Fotografie zwischen dem 17. und 22. Lebensjahr die Kunst der Einstellung, Bildgestaltung und Belichtung. 1945 veröffentlicht die Zeitschrift Look, der er sich fünf Jahre vor der Entstehung seines ersten Kurzfilms anschließt, seine erste Fotografie. Die vom Museum of the City of New York organisierte Ausstellung Through a different lens: Stanley Kubrick photographs lässt den berühmten Regisseur in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Das MBAL ist hocherfreut, diese bedeutende Ausstellung als erste Station in Europa willkommen zu heißen.
Avant de devenir le cinéaste mondialement connu des films 2001: l’Odyssée de l’espace ou Orange mécanique, Stanley Kubrick arpente les rues de New York avec son appareil photographique pour le magazine américain Look. C’est entre 17 et 22 ans et grâce à la photographie qu’il développe l’art du cadrage, de la composition et de l’éclairage, l’objectif braqué sur sa ville natale. Sa première photographie est publiée en 1945 par Look dont il rejoint les rangs cinq ans avant la réalisation de son premier court-métrage. L’exposition, Sous un autre angle : Stanley Kubrick, photographe, organisée par le Museum of the City of New York, révèle le célèbre réalisateur sous une nouvelle lumière. Le MBAL est ravi d’accueillir la première escale européenne de cette importante exposition.
Before becoming a world-famous filmmaker and directing 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Stanley Kubrick, camera in hand, roamed the streets of New York for American magazine Look. Between the age of 17 and 22, through still photography, Kubrick learnt the art of framing, composition and lighting, the main subject being his hometown. His first photograph was published in 1945 by Look, which he joined five years before making his first short film. Curated by the Museum of the City of New York, the exhibition Through a different lens: Stanley Kubrick photographs portrays the famous film director in a new light. MBAL is delighted to be the first European destination of this major exhibition.
