Give and Take. Bilder über Bilder

»Give and Take« – Geben und Nehmen – beschreibt Prozesse des Austauschs und der Aneignung von Bildmaterial in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie. Bilder zirkulieren und migrieren über geographische, kulturelle und soziale Grenzen hinweg. Die Kontexte, in der ein und dieselbe Fotografie heute erscheint, haben sich potenziert und damit auch ihre Wirkung. Die Bedeutung von Bildern – auch des eigenen – lässt sich kaum noch kontrollieren. In diesem Spannungsfeld eignen sich Künstler*innen Bilder aus den verschiedensten Feldern an, um die Mechanismen der Produktion von Realitäten und Identitäten zu erforschen.
Von frühen Bildarchiven, historischen Filmaufnahmen und Museumssammlungen, über die klassischen Printmedien bis hin zu digitalen Bildern auf Social Media und in Bildersuchmaschinen reichen die Materialsammlungen, aus der sich Künstler*innen der Ausstellung bedienen. In fotografischen, filmischen und installativen Arbeiten reagieren sie auf Bilder, die aus einer anderen Zeit stammen oder für einen anderen Zweck entwickelt wurden. Angefragte Künstler*innen: Viktoria Binschtok, Sara Cwynar, Louise Lawler, Max Pinckers, Walid Raad, Volker Renner, Taryn Simon, Wolfgang Tillmans u. a.
"Give and Take" - donner et prendre - décrit les processus d'échange et d'appropriation de matériel visuel dans la photographie contemporaine. Les images circulent et migrent au-delà des frontières géographiques, culturelles et sociales. Les contextes dans lesquels une seule et même photographie apparaît aujourd'hui se sont potentialisés et, par conséquent, son impact aussi. Il n'est plus guère possible de contrôler la signification des images - y compris la sienne. Dans ce contexte tendu, les artistes* s'approprient des images issues des champs les plus divers pour explorer les mécanismes de production de réalités et d'identités.
Des premières archives photographiques, des films historiques et des collections de musées, en passant par les médias imprimés classiques, jusqu'aux images numériques sur les médias sociaux et dans les moteurs de recherche d'images, les collections de matériaux dont se servent les artistes* de l'exposition sont nombreuses. Dans leurs travaux photographiques, cinématographiques et installatifs, ils réagissent à des images qui proviennent d'une autre époque ou qui ont été développées dans un autre but. "Give and Take" descrive i processi di scambio e appropriazione del materiale visivo nella fotografia contemporanea. Le immagini circolano e migrano attraverso le frontiere geografiche, culturali e sociali. I contesti in cui una stessa fotografia appare oggi si sono moltiplicati, e così il suo impatto. Il significato delle immagini - comprese le proprie - non può più essere controllato. In questo campo di tensione, gli artisti si appropriano di immagini provenienti dai campi più diversi per esplorare i meccanismi di produzione di realtà e identità.
Le collezioni di materiale da cui gli artisti in mostra attingono vanno dai primi archivi di immagini, filmati storici e collezioni di musei, fino alla stampa classica e alle immagini digitali sui social media e nei motori di ricerca di immagini. Nelle opere fotografiche, cinematografiche e installative, reagiscono a immagini che provengono da un'altra epoca o sono state sviluppate per uno scopo diverso. Give and Take describes the processes of exchange and appropriation of visual material in contemporary photography. More and more images are circulating and migrating across geographical, cultural, and social boundaries. One and the same photograph may appear today in myriad contexts, multiplying its impact exponentially. We have thus lost control of all the meanings that may be assigned to an image once it is released into the world. In this “give and take,” artists appropriate images from a variety of fields as they explore the mechanisms behind the production of realities and identities.
From early picture archives, historical film footage, and museum collections to classic print media and digital images found on social media and through search engines, the artists featured in the exhibition draw on a rich trove of material. With their photographs, films, and installations, the artists respond to images that originated in another time or were made for a different purpose. Featuring work by Viktoria Binschtok, Sara Cwynar, Louise Lawler, Max Pinckers, Walid Raad, Volker Renner, Taryn Simon, Wolfgang Tillmans, among others.
