In der Ausstellung "Found Not Lost", die dem amerikanischen Fotografen Elliott Erwitt gewidmet ist, treffen zwei Sichtweisen aufeinander, die der Künstler in die Welt gebracht hat.
Zum einen die des genialen Reporters der Agentur Magnum, dessen gewagte Fotografien mit Humor die Absurdität des menschlichen Daseins unterstreichen. Zum anderen die eines Mannes in der letzten Phase seines Lebens, der 2018 beschloss, die zu Beginn seiner Karriere entstandenen Fotografien fernab vom Trubel der Aufträge erneut zu untersuchen.
Durch die erneute Durchsicht dieser Kontaktbögen konnte Elliott Erwitt die Stimme des jungen Fotografen hören, der er war. Mit dieser erneuten Betrachtung stellt er seine Vision der Welt in Frage.
Wenn die meisten Fotografien des Künstlers heute Kultstatus haben, dann deshalb, weil sie eine Kraft besitzen, die mit dem tiefen menschlichen Engagement, das von ihnen ausgeht, verbunden ist. Es ist ein Blick, der sich für die Art und Weise interessiert, wie die Lebenden die Welt bevölkern, mit allem, was dies an Ungereimtheiten und Ernsthaftigkeit mit sich bringt. Es ist ein Blick, der uns dazu bringt, über die uns umgebende Umwelt nachzudenken und sie zu verstehen, wobei der Humor einen Höhepunkt darstellt.
Die seit langem erwarteten unveröffentlichten Fotografien haben eine ganz besondere Kraft, die von der Melancholie ausgeht, die sie ausstrahlen. Die Trägheit, die diese Schwarz-Weiß-Szenen durchdringt, unterscheidet sich von den spektakulären Bildern der Filmstars, dem bissigen Humor der Hundeserie oder den Aufnahmen im Hollywood-Stil, mit denen wir den Künstler normalerweise assoziieren. Es sind vielmehr Bilder, die am Rande bleiben, eingefangen in Momenten des Atemholens im hektischen Rhythmus der Kommissionen.
Dennoch üben diese nun rehabilitierten Fotografien die gleiche Anziehungskraft auf den Betrachter aus wie die berühmtesten Aufnahmen. Indem er seine Fotografien als Kommentare zur alltäglichen Absurdität, die sich vor unseren Augen abspielt, definiert, hat Elliott Erwitt mit seinem Werk eine unglaubliche Kartografie der menschlichen Emotionen geschaffen. Vielleicht liegt der Schlüssel zu dieser Faszination in der Tatsache, dass diese Bilder zu jenem "schwer fassbaren Ideal" tendieren, von dem der Künstler als einem Moment spricht, in dem alles zusammenkommt.
Die Ausstellung "Found Not Lost" zielt also darauf ab, Bilder, die bereits ikonisch sind und auf die viele Augen gerichtet sind, mit neuen Bildern zusammenzubringen.

D'une part, celui du reporter de génie de l'agence Magnum, dont les photographies audacieuses soulignent avec humour l'absurdité de la condition humaine. D'autre part, celle d'un homme au dernier stade de sa vie qui a décidé, en 2018, de réexaminer les photographies prises au début de sa carrière, loin du tumulte des commandes.
En revisitant cette mer de planches contact, Elliott Erwitt a pu écouter la voix du jeune photographe qu'il était. Avec ce réexamen, c'est sa vision du monde qu'il remet en question.
Si la plupart des photographies de l'artiste ont aujourd'hui un statut d'icône, c'est parce qu'elles possèdent une force liée à l'engagement humain profond qui s'en dégage. C'est un regard qui s'intéresse à la manière dont les vivants habitent le monde, avec tout ce que cela comporte d'incongruité et de gravité. C'est un regard qui nous fait réfléchir et comprendre l'environnement qui nous entoure, avec l'humour en point d'orgue.
Les photographies inédites, longtemps attendues, ont une force très particulière, due à la mélancolie qui s'en dégage. La langueur qui imprègne ces scènes en noir et blanc diffère des images spectaculaires de stars de cinéma, de l'humour acerbe de la série des chiens ou des clichés hollywoodiens auxquels on associe habituellement l'artiste. Il s'agit, au contraire, d'images qui restent en marge, saisies lors de moments de respiration dans le rythme effréné des commandes.
Néanmoins, ces photographies désormais réhabilitées exercent sur le spectateur le même pouvoir d'attraction que les clichés les plus célèbres. Définissant ses photographies comme des commentaires sur l'absurdité quotidienne qui se joue sous nos yeux, Elliott Erwitt a créé à travers son œuvre une incroyable cartographie des émotions humaines. La clé de cette fascination réside peut-être dans le fait que ces images tendent vers cet "idéal insaisissable" dont l'artiste parle comme d'un moment où tout est réuni.

Se la maggior parte delle fotografie dell'artista hanno oggi uno status iconico, è perché possiedono una forza legata al profondo impegno umano che emana da esse. È uno sguardo interessato al modo in cui i vivi abitano il mondo, con tutto ciò che questo comporta in termini di incongruenza e gravità. È un'attenzione che ci fa riflettere e capire l'ambiente che ci circonda, con l'umorismo come punto culminante.
Le fotografie inedite, che sono state a lungo attese, hanno una forza molto speciale, dovuta alla malinconia che emana da esse. Il languore che pervade queste scene in bianco e nero si distingue dalle immagini spettacolari delle star del cinema, dall'umorismo acerbo della serie dei cani o dagli scatti in stile hollywoodiano con cui siamo soliti associare l'artista. Tuttavia, queste fotografie ormai riabilitate esercitano sullo spettatore lo stesso potere di attrazione delle fotografie più famose. Definendo le sue fotografie come commentari dell'assurdità quotidiana che si svolge sotto i nostri occhi, Elliott Erwitt ha creato con il suo lavoro un'incredibile cartografia delle emozioni umane. Forse la chiave di questo fascino sta nel fatto che queste immagini tendono verso quell'"ideale inafferrabile" di cui parla l'artista come un momento in cui tutto si unisce.
La mostra "Found Not Lost" si propone quindi di mettere insieme immagini già iconiche, su cui molti occhi si sono concentrati, con immagini nuove.
The exhibition "Found Not Lost" devoted to the American photographer Elliott Erwitt proposes the meeting of two views that the artist has been able to bring to the world.
First, that of the genius reporter from the Magnum Agency, whose daring photographs underline with humour the absurdity of the human condition. On the other hand, that of a man in the last stage of his life who decided, in 2018, to re-examine the photographs taken at the beginning of his career, far from the tumult of commissions.
By revisiting this sea of contact sheets, Elliott Erwitt was able to listen to the voice of the young photographer he was. With this re-examination, it is his vision of the world that he questions.
If most of the artist's photographs have iconic status today, it is because they possess a strength linked to the deep human commitment that emanates from them. It is a look that is interested in the way the living inhabit the world, with all that this entails in terms of incongruity and gravity. It is an attention that makes us think about and understand the environment that surrounds us, with humour as a highlight.
The unpublished photographs, which have long been awaited, have a very special force, due to the melancholy that emanates from them. The languor that pervades these black-and-white scenes differs from the spectacular images of film stars, the acerbic humour of the dog series or the Hollywood-style shots with which we usually associate the artist. They are, on the contrary, images that remain on the margins, captured during moments of breath in the frantic rhythm of the commissions.
Nevertheless, these now rehabilitated photographs exert the same power of attraction on the viewer as the most famous photographs. Defining his photographs as commentaries on the everyday absurdity that plays out before our eyes, Elliott Erwitt has created through his work an incredible cartography of human emotions. Perhaps the key to this fascination lies in the fact that these images tend towards that "elusive ideal" of which the artist speaks as a moment when everything comes together.
The exhibition "Found Not Lost" thus aims to bring together images that are already iconic, and on which many eyes have been focused, with images that are new.
