Die Ausstellung von Robin Friend, die ursprünglich im Rahmen der dreizehnten Ausgabe des Festivals ImageSingulières geplant war und wegen der Gesundheitskrise abgesagt wurde, ist Teil der Kultursaison 2021-2022 des Centre photographique documentaire - ImageSingulières.
"Bastard Countryside" erforscht die britische Landschaft als eine Reihe von Metaphern. Jede Fotografie ist eine Darstellung der Art und Weise, wie unser moderner Lebensstil den Planeten zerstört. Die Serie wurde in Großbritannien aufgenommen, aber die Themen und Fragestellungen sind global und laden uns als Betrachter dazu ein, über die Handlungen nachzudenken, die unsere Landschaften formen und verändern.
Das Ganze verbreitet eine betörende Tristesse und verkörpert das, was Victor Hugo als "diese Art von Land, ein wenig bastardisch, ziemlich hässlich, aber bizarr und aus zwei Naturen zusammengesetzt ... Ende der Spurrillen, Anfang der Leidenschaften ..." beschrieb. Den Rand einer Stadt zu beobachten "ist wie eine Amphibie zu beobachten", sagte er auch und dachte dabei an die Pariser Peripherie als ein Lebewesen, eine wachsende Kreatur, die alles auf ihrem Weg durcheinanderbringt und die Grenzen zwischen Stadt und Land verwischt.
Der "ländliche Bastard" existiert nicht mehr nur am Stadtrand, er ist überall, wohin man schaut. Im Zentrum tobt ein Bruderkampf zwischen der Menschheit und der Natur, zwei widersprüchliche Kräfte, die darum kämpfen, die Kontrolle zu übernehmen. Doch ein Teil der "bastardischen Landschaft" wohnt anderswo, in einem imaginären Reich, das ins Unbekannte vorstößt, in eine weniger sichere Landschaft. Mit einem Gefühl für das, was verloren ist, und das, was noch kommen wird, berühren diese Bilder unsere kulturelle Angst davor, wie die Zukunft aussehen wird und was wir von unserem - beschädigten - Planeten den zukünftigen Generationen hinterlassen werden.
Der in London geborene Robin Friend nutzt seine Kamera, um die schwierige Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur zu erforschen. Seine raffinierten Fotos zeigen die subtilen und offensichtlichen Wege, auf denen wir in die natürliche Umwelt eingreifen. Robin Friend nähert sich seinen Themen mit dem Geist eines Entdeckers, der Sorge eines Aktivisten und der Sensibilität eines Künstlers.
Seine Arbeit wird weltweit ausgestellt und wurde 2018 auch in dem Buch "Bastard Countryside" im Verlag Loose Joints veröffentlicht.

« Bastard Countryside » explore le paysage britannique comme une série de métaphores. Chaque photographie est une représentation de la façon dont notremode de vie moderne détruit la planète. La série a été réalisée au Royaume-Uni, mais les sujets et thèmes sont globaux et nous invitent, en tant que spectateurs, à réfléchir aux actions qui façonnent et modifient nos paysages.
L’ensemble diffuse une tristesse envoûtante et incarne ce que Victor Hugo décrivait comme « cette espèce de campagne un peu bâtarde, assez laide, mais bizarre et composée de deux natures… fin des ornières, commencement des passions… ». Observer la bordure d’une ville « c’est observer un amphibien », disait-il aussi, pensant la périphérie parisienne comme un être vivant, une créature grandissante chamboulant tout sur son passage, estompant la délimitation ville / campagne.
La « campagne bâtarde » n’existe plus seulement en périphérie, elle est partout où on regarde. Au centre, une lutte fratricide oppose l’humanité et la nature, deux forces contradictoires qui se battent pour prendre le contrôle. Mais une partie de la « campagne bâtarde » réside ailleurs, dans un royaume imaginaire qui avance vers l’inconnu, un paysage moins certain. Avec une sensation de ce qui est perdu et de ce qui reste à venir, ces images touchent à notre angoisse culturelle de ce que sera le futur et de ce que nous laisserons de notre planète -abîmée- aux générations futures.
Robin Friend, né à Londres, utilise son appareil photo pour enquêter sur la relation difficile entre les êtres humains et la nature. Ses photos raffinées révèlent les différentes manières, subtiles et manifestes, par lesquelles nous empiétons sur l’environnement naturel. Robin Friend aborde ses sujets avec l’esprit d’un explorateur, l’inquiétude d’un activiste et la sensibilité d’un artiste.
Exposé dans le monde entier, son travail a aussi fait l’objet d’un livre « Bastard Countryside » aux éditions Loose Joints en 2018.

Osservare il bordo di una città "è come osservare un anfibio", ha anche detto, pensando alla periferia parigina come un essere vivente, una creatura in crescita che sconvolge tutto sul suo cammino, confondendo il confine città/campagna.
La "campagna bastarda" non esiste più solo in periferia, è ovunque si guardi. Al centro, una lotta fratricida oppone l'umanità alla natura, due forze contraddittorie che lottano per il controllo. Ma una parte della "campagna bastarda" si trova altrove, in un regno immaginario che avanza nell'ignoto, un paesaggio meno certo. Con un senso di ciò che è perduto e di ciò che deve ancora venire, queste immagini toccano la nostra ansia culturale su ciò che sarà il futuro e su ciò che lasceremo del nostro pianeta -distrutto- alle generazioni future.
Il londinese Robin Friend usa la sua macchina fotografica per indagare la difficile relazione tra l'uomo e la natura. Le sue raffinate fotografie rivelano i vari modi, sottili e palesi, in cui invadiamo l'ambiente naturale. Robin Friend si avvicina ai suoi soggetti con lo spirito di un esploratore, la preoccupazione di un attivista e la sensibilità di un artista.
Esposto in tutto il mondo, il suo lavoro è stato anche oggetto di un libro 'Bastard Countryside' pubblicato da Loose Joints nel 2018.
Initially scheduled as part of the thirteenth edition of the ImageSingulières festival, which was cancelled due to the health crisis, Robin Friend's exhibition is part of the 2021-2022 cultural season of the Documentary Photography Center - ImageSingulières.
"Bastard Countryside" explores the British landscape as a series of metaphors. Each photograph is a representation of how our modern way of life is destroying the planet. The series was made in the UK, but the subjects and themes are global and invite us, as viewers, to reflect on the actions that shape and change our landscapes.
The ensemble diffuses a haunting sadness and embodies what Victor Hugo described as "that kind of countryside that is a bit bastard, ugly enough, but strange and composed of two natures... end of ruts, beginning of passions...". To observe the edge of a city "is to observe an amphibian", he also said, thinking of the Parisian periphery as a living being, a growing creature upsetting everything in its path, blurring the city/countryside boundary.
The "bastard countryside" no longer exists only on the outskirts, it is everywhere you look. At the center, a fratricidal struggle pits humanity against nature, two contradictory forces fighting for control. But part of the "bastard countryside" resides elsewhere, in an imaginary realm that advances into the unknown, a less certain landscape. With a sense of what is lost and what is yet to come, these images touch on our cultural anxiety about what the future will be and what we will leave of our -wrecked- planet to future generations.
London-born Robin Friend uses his camera to investigate the difficult relationship between humans and nature. His refined photographs reveal the various ways, subtle and overt, in which we encroach on the natural environment. Robin Friend approaches his subjects with the spirit of an explorer, the concern of an activist and the sensitivity of an artist.
Exhibited around the world, her work has also been featured in a book "Bastard Countryside" published by Loose Joints in 2018.
