Roger Ballen ist einer der einflussreichsten und wichtigsten Fotografen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Ohne Scheu wag er sich mit seinen Werken an die grossen Fragen des Menschseins und dies auf eine Art und Weise, die unmittelbar berührt und zum Denken anregt.
Geboren in New York arbeitete Ballen über 30 Jahr lang in Südafrika. Dort entstand auch sein eindrucksvolles Werk “Asylum of the Birds”. In dessen Zentrum stehen die Bewohner*innen eines heruntergekommenen Hauses am Stadtrand von Johannesburg. Zu ihnen gehören sowohl Menschen als auch Tiere. Und ganz besonders: die omnipräsenten Vögel.
In “Asylum of the Birds” kontrastiert Ballen die von Armut und Gewalt geprägte Umgebung eines Elendsvier- tels eindringlich und ungeschönt mit den Vögeln als Symbole der Freiheit und des Friedens. Das Resultat ist faszinierend, fesselnd und verstörend zugleich.

Roger Ballen est l'un des photographes les plus influents et les plus importants du 21e siècle. Dans son œuvre, il s'aventure sans complexe dans les grandes questions de l'humanité, et le fait d'une manière qui est immédiatement émouvante et qui donne à réfléchir.
Né à New York, M. Ballen a travaillé en Afrique du Sud pendant plus de 30 ans. C'est là qu'il a créé son œuvre impressionnante "L'asile des oiseaux". Elle est centrée sur les habitants d'une maison délabrée dans la banlieue de Johannesburg. Ils comprennent à la fois les humains et les animaux. Et surtout : les oiseaux omniprésents.
Dans "L'asile des oiseaux", Ballen oppose l'environnement de pauvreté et de violence d'un bidonville aux oiseaux, symboles de liberté et de paix. Le résultat est à la fois fascinant, captivant et inquiétant.

È incentrato sugli abitanti di una casa fatiscente alla periferia di Johannesburg. Includono sia gli esseri umani che gli animali. E soprattutto: gli onnipresenti uccelli.
In "Asylum of the Birds", Ballen contrappone l'ambiente povero e violento di una baraccopoli agli uccelli come simbolo di libertà e pace. Il risultato è affascinante, accattivante e inquietante allo stesso tempo.

Roger Ballen is one of the most influential and important photographers of the twenty-first century. In their directness an clarity, his works leave no one untouched. In the end, they pose nothing less than the question of being human.
Born in New York Ballen has lived and worked in South Africa for over 30 years. This is also the place where he created the masterpiece “Asylum of the Birds”. The protagonists of the work are the inhabitants of a derelict house in a Johannesburg suburb, hu- mans and animals, and most notably the omnipresent birds.
Forcefully and with great truthfulness the artist confronts the environment of a slum quarter, marked by unre- solved conflicts and violence, with the birds as symbols of freedom
and peace. The result is fascinating, captivating and disturbing at the same time.
