Das Muzeum Susch präsentiert eine umfassende Ausstellung zum Werk der Schweizer Künstlerin Hannah Villiger (1951-1997). Hannah Villiger: Amaze me ist mit Beiträgen der zeitgenössischen Künstlerinnen Alexandra Bachzetsis (b. 1974), Lou Masduraud (b. 1990) und Manon Wertenbroek (b. 1991) die grösste Ausstellung, die der Künstlerin seit über 15 Jahren gewidmet wurde. Sie steht im Einklang mit der Mission des Muzeums Susch, welche Künstlerinnen ins Rampenlicht rücken und den herkömmlichen Kanon der Kunstgeschichte überarbeiten will.
Hannah Villiger, die als eine der bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Schweiz gilt, starb mit nur 45 Jahren an Herzversagen. Bekannt ist sie vor allem für ihre grossformatigen fotografischen Arbeiten, in denen sie einzelne Nahaufnahmen von teilweise fragmentierten und abstrahierten Körperteilen kombinierte. Damit befasste sie sich mit dem eigenen Selbstverständnis, dem Körper in Bezug auf die Identität und der Haut als Schnittstelle zwischen innerer und äusserer Welt. Villiger verwandte Polaroidbilder, die sie über ein Zwischennegativ vergrösserte und auf Aluminiumplatten aufzog, um sie sowohl einzeln als auch in wandgrossen, rasterartig zusammengefügten Gruppierungen zu präsentieren. Die aktuellen Entwicklungen bezüglich sozialer Medien und des breiteren Diskurses zu Themen wie Gender und Selbstdarstellung werfen ein neues Licht und Interesse auf Villigers Praxis. Die rasterartige Struktur ihrer grösseren Arbeiten erinnert an Plattformen wie Instagram und ihre schonungslose Selbstdokumentation wirkt wie ein Vorläufer der Selfie-Kultur.
In der Ausstellung Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me werden über 60 Werke gezeigt, die einen Bogen von den ersten Werken der Künstlerin aus den 1970er Jahren bis zu den Polaroidbildern aus den 1980er Jahren spannen. Um diese Bandbreite von Villigers künstlerischem Schaffen zu zeigen, arbeitete das Muzeum Susch eng mit dem Nachlass der Künstlerin zusammen. Eine Reihe grossformatiger Fotoarbeiten und eine Gruppe von Werken auf Papier werden in Susch erstmals präsentiert. Auch einige von Villigers weniger bekannten Arbeiten ihrer direkten von Menschenhand bebauten Umgebung, wie etwa polaroidbasierte Stadtansichten ihrer Arbeits- und Lebensräume Paris und Basel, sind in der Ausstellung zu sehen.
Den erweiterten Rahmen von Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me bilden die drei zeitgenössischen Schweizer Künstlerinnen Alexandra Bachzetsis, Lou Masduraud and Manon Wertenbroek mit drei kleineren Präsentationen, die über den gesamten Rundgang durch das Museum verteilt sind und fortwährend Anreize zur Reflektion generationenübergreifender künstlerischer Strategien und Ansätze schaffen. Die Künstlerinnen wurden aufgrund ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit ähnlichen Themen wie denjenigen von Villiger ausgewählt. In Bachzetsis Videoinstallation This Side Up ist eine Performancekünstlerin zu sehen, die sich trotz begrenztem Raum in alle Richtungen bewegt, vergleichbar mit Villigers Methode, die ihren eigenen Körper vor der Linse ihrer Polaroidkamera windet, dreht und verformt. Masduraud überdenkt mit Petrifying basin (kisses with the nymphs), einer skulpturalen Installation mit ihren charakteristischen Brunnen und kleinen Wandobjekten, auf spielerische und sinnliche Art das organische Leben neu und verankert mythologische Traditionen in der Gegenwart. Schliesslich thematisiert Wertenbroek mit einer Auswahl von Objekten die Grenzen zwischen Hautoberfläche und der sie umgebenden Welt.
Die Gründerin des Muzeum Susch, Grazyna Kulczyk, sagt über die Ausstellung und über die Künstlerin Hannah Villiger: «Künstlerinnen scheuen sich nicht mehr, ihre durch Krankheit oder Alter beeinträchtigten Körper zu dokumentieren und oft werden diese Kunstwerke zu Chroniken des Schmerzes. Das Beobachten und Erfassung des eigenen Körpers wird für weibliche Kunstschaffende zu einer Art Manifest, das die Autonomie über den Körper zurückfordert. Künstlerinnen malten, fotografierten und modellierten sich selbst in einer Weise, dass sich die Scham angesichts der Nacktheit und Unvollkommenheit oft in einen Moment des Stolzes wandelte. Hannah Villiger wurde mittels der Fotografien ihres Körpers zu einer eigentlichen Bildhauerin des Leibes.
Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me im Muzeum Susch wird von Madelaine Schuppli und Yasmin Afschar gastkuratiert. Eine Monografie, die den neuesten Stand der Forschung zu Hannah Villigers Praxis und Einfluss widerspiegelt, ergänzt die Ausstellung. Villiger wird oft als Künstlerin mit einer gewissen Vorbildrolle gesehen, was die Herausgeberinnen dazu inspirierte, Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus ihrem Umfeld für Textbeiträge einzuladen, wie Katja Schenker, Beat Streuli und Claudia und Julia Müller. Das Buch wird als Teil einer umfassenden Serie an Monografien des Muzeum Susch und Skira im März 2023 publiziert. Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me wird durch die Zusammenarbeit und Unterstützung der Stiftung «The Estate of Hannah Villiger» ermöglicht.
Le Muzeum Susch présente une exposition complète sur l'œuvre de l'artiste suisse Hannah Villiger (1951-1997). Hannah Villiger : Amaze me est la plus grande exposition consacrée à l'artiste depuis plus de 15 ans, avec des contributions des artistes contemporaines Alexandra Bachzetsis (née en 1974), Lou Masduraud (née en 1990) et Manon Wertenbroek (née en 1991). Elle s'inscrit dans la mission du Muzeum Susch, qui souhaite mettre les femmes artistes sous les feux de la rampe et réviser les canons traditionnels de l'histoire de l'art.
Hannah Villiger, considérée comme l'une des artistes les plus importantes de Suisse, est décédée d'un arrêt cardiaque à seulement 45 ans. Elle est surtout connue pour ses travaux photographiques de grand format, dans lesquels elle combinait des gros plans individuels de parties du corps partiellement fragmentées et abstraites. Elle s'est ainsi intéressée à sa propre image de soi, au corps par rapport à l'identité et à la peau en tant qu'interface entre le monde intérieur et le monde extérieur. Villiger a utilisé des images polaroïd qu'elle a agrandies à l'aide d'un négatif intermédiaire et montées sur des plaques d'aluminium afin de les présenter aussi bien individuellement que dans des groupes de la taille d'un mur, assemblés à la manière d'une grille. Les développements actuels concernant les médias sociaux et le discours plus large sur des sujets tels que le genre et l'autoreprésentation jettent une nouvelle lumière et un nouvel intérêt sur la pratique de Villiger. La structure en grille de ses plus grands travaux rappelle des plateformes telles qu'Instagram et son autodocumentation impitoyable semble être un précurseur de la culture du selfie.
L'exposition Hannah Villiger : Amaze Me présente plus de 60 œuvres qui couvrent une période allant des premières œuvres de l'artiste dans les années 1970 jusqu'aux polaroïds des années 1980. Pour montrer cet éventail de la création artistique de Villiger, le Muzeum Susch a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec la succession de l'artiste. Une série de travaux photographiques de grand format et un groupe d'œuvres sur papier sont présentés pour la première fois à Susch. Le cadre élargi de Hannah Villiger : Amaze Me est constitué par trois artistes suisses contemporaines, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Lou Masduraud et Manon Wertenbroek, avec trois petites présentations réparties sur l'ensemble du parcours du musée, qui incitent en permanence à une réflexion sur les stratégies et les approches artistiques intergénérationnelles. Les artistes ont été choisis en raison de leur exploration de thèmes similaires à ceux de Villiger. Dans l'installation vidéo This Side Up de Bachzetsi, on peut voir une artiste de performance qui se déplace dans toutes les directions malgré un espace limité, comparable à la méthode de Villiger, qui tord, tourne et déforme son propre corps devant l'objectif de son appareil photo Polaroid. Avec Petrifying basin (kisses with the nymphs), une installation sculpturale avec ses fontaines caractéristiques et ses petits objets muraux, Masduraud repense de manière ludique et sensuelle la vie organique et ancre les traditions mythologiques dans le présent. Enfin, Wertenbroek aborde, avec une sélection d'objets, les frontières entre la surface de la peau et le monde qui l'entoure.

L'observation et la saisie de son propre corps deviennent pour les créatrices d'art une sorte de manifeste qui revendique l'autonomie sur le corps. Les femmes artistes se sont peintes, photographiées et modelées de telle manière que la honte face à la nudité et à l'imperfection se transformait souvent en un moment de fierté. Hannah Villiger est devenue, par le biais des photographies de son corps, une véritable sculptrice du corps.

Une monographie reflétant l'état le plus récent de la recherche sur la pratique et l'influence de Hannah Villiger complète l'exposition. Villiger est souvent considérée comme une artiste ayant un certain rôle de modèle, ce qui a inspiré les éditrices à inviter des artistes de son entourage à rédiger des textes, comme Katja Schenker, Beat Streuli et Claudia et Julia Müller. The Muzeum Susch presents a comprehensive exhibition on the work of the Swiss artist Hannah Villiger (1951-1997). Hannah Villiger: Amaze me, with contributions by contemporary artists Alexandra Bachzetsis (b. 1974), Lou Masduraud (b. 1990) and Manon Wertenbroek (b. 1991), is the largest exhibition dedicated to the artist in over 15 years. It is in line with the mission of the Muzeum Susch, which aims to put women artists in the spotlight and revise the conventional canon of art history.
Hannah Villiger, considered one of the most important women artists in Switzerland, died of heart failure at the age of only 45. She is best known for her large-format photographic works, in which she combined individual close-ups of sometimes fragmented and abstracted body parts. In this way, she dealt with her own self-image, the body in relation to identity, and the skin as an interface between the inner and outer worlds. Villiger used Polaroid images, which she enlarged via an intermediate negative and mounted on aluminum plates to present them both individually and in wall-sized, grid-like groupings. Current developments regarding social media and the broader discourse on issues such as gender and self-representation shed new light and interest on Villiger's practice. The grid-like structure of her larger works is reminiscent of platforms like Instagram, and her relentless self-documentation feels like a precursor to selfie culture.
The exhibition Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me features over 60 works spanning the artist's earliest works from the 1970s to her Polaroid images from the 1980s. To show this breadth of Villiger's artistic output, the Muzeum Susch worked closely with the artist's estate. A series of large-format photographic works and a group of works on paper will be presented in Susch for the first time. Also included in the exhibition are some of Villiger's lesser-known works of her direct man-made environment, such as polaroid-based city views of her working and living spaces of Paris and Basel.
The three contemporary Swiss artists Alexandra Bachzetsis, Lou Masduraud and Manon Wertenbroek form the extended framework of Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me with three smaller presentations that are distributed throughout the museum's tour and continually create incentives to reflect on cross-generational artistic strategies and approaches. The artists were chosen for their engagement with themes similar to Villiger's. Bachzetsi's video installation This Side Up features a performance artist moving in all directions despite limited space, comparable to Villiger's method of twisting, turning, and deforming her own body in front of the lens of her Polaroid camera. Masduraud rethinks organic life in a playful and sensual way with Petrifying basin (kisses with the nymphs), a sculptural installation with her signature fountains and small wall objects, anchoring mythological traditions in the present. Finally, Wertenbroek's selection of objects addresses the boundaries between the surface of the skin and the world around it.
The founder of Muzeum Susch, Grazyna Kulczyk, says of the exhibition and of artist Hannah Villiger: "Women artists are no longer afraid to document their bodies, which have been affected by illness or age, and often these works of art become chronicles of pain. Observing and recording one's own body becomes a kind of manifesto for female artists, reclaiming autonomy over the body. Women artists painted, photographed, and sculpted themselves in a way that often transformed shame in the face of nakedness and imperfection into a moment of pride. Through the photographs of her body, Hannah Villiger became an actual sculptor of the body.
Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me at Muzeum Susch is guest-curated by Madelaine Schuppli and Yasmin Afschar. A monograph reflecting the latest research on Hannah Villiger's practice and influence complements the exhibition. Villiger is often seen as an artist with a certain role model, which inspired the editors to invite artists from her circle to contribute texts, such as Katja Schenker, Beat Streuli, and Claudia and Julia Müller. The book will be published as part of a comprehensive series of monographs by the Muzeum Susch and Skira in March 2023. Hannah Villiger: Amaze Me is made possible through the collaboration and support of The Estate of Hannah Villiger Foundation.
