Anlässlich des 85. Geburtstages des Fotografen Thomas Billhardt am 2. Mai 2022 präsen@ert die Galerie CAMERA WORK ab dem 23. April 2022 die Ausstellung »Thomas Billhardt – Alexanderplatz«. Die Ausstellung würdigt das Schaffen und Wirken des international erfolgreichen Reportagefotografen. 35 Werke – entstanden in den Jahren von 1958 bis 2020 – bieten historische und humorvolle Einblicke in das urbane Treiben am legendären Berliner Alexanderplatz. Seit über 60 Jahren dokumentiert Thomas Billhardt nunmehr diesen Ort, dessen Wandlung die Ausstellung in eindrucksvollen Gegenüberstellungen aufzeigt. Die Fotografien, die parallel zur Ausstellung »Witnessing History« gezeigt werden, sind zudem Zeugnis einer hervorragenden Beobachtungsgabe und dokumentieren die Gesichter einer Stadt im Herzen Berlins.
Thomas Billhardt wurde 1937 in Chemnitz geboren. Seine Mutter, die als Fotografin tätig war, bildete ihn bereits ab seinem 14 Lebensjahr in ebenjener Profession aus. Nach einem Studium an der Fachschule für angewandte Kunst in Magdeburg bis 1957, sammelte er erste praktische Erfahrungen als Verlagsfotograf beim Postkartenverlag Bild und Heimat und begann zeitgleich ein Studium zum Fotografiker und Fotodesigner an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Seine Diplomarbeit über den Berliner Alexanderplatz definierte den Beginn seiner Verbundenheit mit jenem Ort, an den er von nun an immer wieder zurückkehren wird. Als freischaffender Fotograf reiste Thomas Billhardt zudem für verschiedene Auftraggeber in insgesamt 49 Länder. Die dort entstandenen Arbeiten wurden weltweit publiziert. Die unermessliche Leistung von Thomas Billhardt, mit seinen Fotografien aus den Kriegs- und Krisenregionen dieser Welt die Öffentlichkeit über Krieg und dem daraus entstandenen Leid aufzuklären, wiegt über allem. Weltberühmt wurde er mit seinen Fotografien vom Vietnamkrieg in den 1960er Jahren.
Zahlreiche internationale Ausstellungen würdigen dieses Bestreben. In London, Moskau, Beirut, Hanoi, Stockholm, Florenz, Paris sowie in vielen anderen Städten wurden und werden die Fotografien von Thomas Billhardt als Zeitzeugnis sowie als bedeutender Teil der deutschen Fotografiegeschichte ausgestellt. Im Jahr 1988 waren seine Arbeiten auch Bestandteil der UNICEF-Ausstellung "Kinder der Welt" in New York. Einige Jahre später führten die UNICEF und Thomas Billhardt ihre Zusammenarbeit fort, indem Thomas Billhardt mehrere Projekte in Asien fotografisch begleitete.

À l'occasion du 85e anniversaire du photographe Thomas Billhardt, le 2 mai 2022, la galerie CAMERA WORK présente à partir du 23 avril 2022 l'exposition "Thomas Billhardt - Alexanderplatz". L'exposition rend hommage à l'œuvre et au travail de ce photographe de reportage au succès international. Trente-cinq œuvres - réalisées entre 1958 et 2020 - offrent des aperçus historiques et humoristiques de l'activité urbaine de la légendaire Alexanderplatz de Berlin. Cela fait maintenant plus de 60 ans que Thomas Billhardt documente ce lieu, dont l'exposition montre la transformation à travers des juxtapositions impressionnantes. Les photographies, présentées parallèlement à l'exposition "Witnessing History", témoignent en outre d'un excellent sens de l'observation et documentent les visages d'une ville au cœur de Berlin.
Thomas Billhardt est né en 1937 à Chemnitz. Sa mère, qui travaillait comme photographe, l'a formé à cette même profession dès l'âge de 14 ans. Après des études à la Fachschule für angewandte Kunst de Magdebourg jusqu'en 1957, il a acquis ses premières expériences pratiques en tant que photographe d'édition pour la maison d'édition de cartes postales Bild und Heimat et a commencé en même temps des études de photographe et de designer photographique à la Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst de Leipzig. Son travail de diplôme sur l'Alexanderplatz de Berlin définit le début de son attachement à ce lieu, où il ne cessera désormais de revenir. En tant que photographe indépendant, Thomas Billhardt a également voyagé dans 49 pays pour différents clients. Les travaux qu'il y a réalisés ont été publiés dans le monde entier. La mostra rende omaggio al lavoro del fotografo di reportage di successo internazionale. 35 opere - create tra il 1958 e il 2020 - offrono spunti storici e umoristici sul trambusto urbano della leggendaria Alexanderplatz di Berlino. Thomas Billhardt ha documentato questo luogo per oltre 60 anni, e la mostra mostra mostra la sua trasformazione in impressionanti giustapposizioni. On the occasion of the 85th birthday of photographer Thomas Billhardt on May 2, 2022, the CAMERA WORK gallery will present the exhibition "Thomas Billhardt - Alexanderplatz" from April 23, 2022. The exhibition pays tribute to the work and impact of the internationally successful reportage photographer. 35 works - created between 1958 and 2020 - offer historical and humorous insights into the urban hustle and bustle of Berlin's legendary Alexanderplatz. Thomas Billhardt has now been documenting this place for over 60 years, and the exhibition shows its transformation in impressive juxtapositions. The photographs, which are shown parallel to the exhibition "Witnessing History," are also testimony to an outstanding gift for observation and document the faces of a city in the heart of Berlin.
