Absolut Cuba
Raúl Cañibano
Dem Enthusiasmus des österreichischen Verlages Edition Lammerhuber können wir uneingeschränkt zustimmen, der die fotografische Arbeit »Absolut Cuba« von Raúl Cañibano im letzten Jahr verlegte und wie folgt ankündigte: »Die ultimative Liebeserklärung von Raúl Cañibano – einem der begnadetsten Fotografen Lateinamerikas – an seine Heimat Kuba! Bilder von Tradition, Glück, Tragödie und Magie: Schöner, klüger, sinnlicher und besser kann man das Lebensgefühl der größten Insel der Karibik nicht fotografieren.« Folglich erschien das Buch auch in der Verlagsreihe »Visual Poetry« des schon mehrfach mit dem FEP European Book Prize of the Year ausgezeichneten Verlages.
Jetzt zeigen wir den Fotografen erstmalig in einer Ausstellung in Hannover.
1961 in Havanna geboren, arbeitete er erst als Schweißer in der zivilen Luftfahrt, ehe er seine Leidenschaft für die Fotografie entwickelte. Mittlerweile wurden seine Arbeiten weltweit ausgestellt, darunter in der Casa de las Americas in Madrid, im Royal National Theatre in London, beim Arles Festival in Frankreich, dem Nordic Light International Festival of Photography in Norwegen, im Frankston Arts Centre in Australien und in den New Yorker Galerien Robert Mann und Throckmorton Fine Art.
Cañibano überwältigt den Betrachter mit seinem besonderen Blick, selbst da, wo scheinbar schon alles bekannt ist. Im ganz normalen Alltag des urbanen Lebens gewinnt er den Motiven eine Magie ab, die oft ins Surreale geht. Das macht ihn zu einem der herausragendsten Fotografen Lateinamerikas und knüpft auf visuelle Art an die Literatur des magischen Realismus von Márquez und an die Malerei Frida Kahlos an.
Sein Werkblock »Tierra Guajira« ist die Würdigung des kubanischen Bauern. »Meine Absicht ist es, eine Lebensweise zu dokumentieren, die im Laufe der Jahre verblassen könnte, sowie die Veränderungen, die sich im Zuge der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung ergeben«, sagt er über diese Arbeit. »Was ich erreichen möchte, ist, den Edelmut, die Vertrautheit und die Freundlichkeit der kubanischen Bauern einzufangen.« Das fotografiert er ohne Sentimentalität und Melodrama, aber mit einer gewissen Art von Ergriffenheit. Und daneben hat seine Arbeit auch einen anthropologischen Charakter, da er Leben und Bräuche dokumentiert, die mit der Entwicklung Kubas verloren gehen könnten. Nach Meinung der spanischen Kuratorin Mabel Llevat schafft es Raul Cañibano, »den Geist der kubanischen Nation in seinen Fotos festzuhalten, ihr Glück und gleichzeitig ihre Tragödien, ihre Traditionen und Sitten«. Und die 2011 verstorbene Kunsthistorikerin und Museumsdirektorin Erika Billeter sagte über seine Kuba-Bilder, »Er betrachtet die Wirklichkeit hinter Dunst und Schleiern und als Schattenfigur. Das macht den unwiderstehlichen Zauber dieser Fotografien aus.«
Gemeinsam mit Bildern aus den Serien »Ciudad«, »Fe por San Lázaro« und »Ocaso« lässt uns Raúl Cañibano das Herz und die Seele Kubas auf sinnliche Weise spüren. Seine Bilder sind Identitätsstiftend und wahrhaftig. Sie sind auch ein Bekenntnis Cañibanos zu seiner Heimat, das deutlicher nicht sein: „Kuba ist ein fantastisches Land für Dokumentarfotografie und jeden Tag danke ich Gott für mein Leben…aber nur, wenn ich für immer in Kuba leben kann.“ Eine einzigartige Liebeserklärung eines außergewöhnlichen Fotografen und Menschen.
Nous pouvons approuver sans réserve l'enthousiasme de la maison d'édition autrichienne Edition Lammerhuber, qui a édité l'année dernière le travail photographique "Absolut Cuba" de Raúl Cañibano et l'a annoncé ainsi : "La déclaration d'amour ultime de Raúl Cañibano - l'un des photographes les plus doués d'Amérique latine - à sa patrie, Cuba ! Des images de tradition, de bonheur, de tragédie et de magie : on ne peut pas photographier de manière plus belle, plus intelligente, plus sensuelle et meilleure la joie de vivre de la plus grande île des Caraïbes". Par conséquent, le livre est également paru dans la série d'édition "Visual Poetry" de la maison d'édition qui a déjà remporté à plusieurs reprises le FEP European Book Prize of the Year.
Nous présentons maintenant le photographe pour la première fois dans une exposition à Hanovre.

Cañibano subjugue le spectateur avec son regard particulier, même là où tout semble déjà connu. Dans le quotidien tout à fait normal de la vie urbaine, il tire de ses motifs une magie qui vire souvent au surréel. Cela fait de lui l'un des photographes les plus remarquables d'Amérique latine et le rattache de manière visuelle à la littérature du réalisme magique de Márquez et à la peinture de Frida Kahlo.
Son bloc d'œuvres "Tierra Guajira" est l'hommage rendu au paysan cubain. "Mon intention est de documenter un mode de vie qui pourrait s'estomper au fil des années, ainsi que les changements qui se produisent au fur et à mesure de l'évolution de la société", explique-t-il à propos de ce travail. "Ce que je veux atteindre, c'est capturer la noblesse, l'intimité et la gentillesse des paysans cubains". Il photographie cela sans sentimentalisme ni mélodrame, mais avec une certaine forme d'émotion. Et à côté de cela, son travail a aussi un caractère anthropologique, car il documente des vies et des coutumes qui pourraient se perdre avec le développement de Cuba. Selon la conservatrice espagnole Mabel Llevat, Raul Cañibano parvient à "capturer l'esprit de la nation cubaine dans ses photos, son bonheur et en même temps ses tragédies, ses traditions et ses coutumes". Et l'historienne de l'art et directrice de musée Erika Billeter, décédée en 2011, disait de ses photos de Cuba : "Il observe la réalité derrière des brumes et des voiles et comme une figure d'ombre. C'est ce qui fait le charme irrésistible de ces photographies".
Avec les images des séries "Ciudad", "Fe por San Lázaro" et "Ocaso", Raúl Cañibano nous fait ressentir le cœur et l'âme de Cuba de manière sensuelle. Ses images sont identitaires et vraies. Elles sont aussi un aveu de Cañibano à sa patrie, qui ne peut être plus clair : "Cuba est un pays fantastique pour la photographie documentaire et chaque jour je remercie Dieu pour ma vie... mais seulement si je peux vivre à Cuba pour toujours". Une déclaration d'amour unique d'un photographe et d'un homme exceptionnels.
Possiamo essere pienamente d'accordo con l'entusiasmo dell'editore austriaco Edition Lammerhuber, che ha pubblicato l'anno scorso l'opera fotografica di Raúl Cañibano "Absolutely Cuba" e l'ha annunciato così: "L'ultima dichiarazione d'amore di Raúl Cañibano - uno dei fotografi più dotati dell'America Latina - alla sua patria Cuba! Immagini di tradizione, felicità, tragedia e magia: non c'è modo più bello, più intelligente, più sensuale e migliore per fotografare l'attitudine alla vita della più grande isola dei Caraibi". Nella normalissima quotidianità della vita urbana, estrae dai motivi una magia che spesso sfocia nel surreale. Questo lo rende uno dei fotografi più importanti dell'America Latina e lo collega visivamente alla letteratura del realismo magico di Márquez e alla pittura di Frida Kahlo.
Il suo blocco di opere "Tierra Guajira" è un omaggio al contadino cubano. "La mia intenzione è quella di documentare un modo di vivere che potrebbe svanire nel corso degli anni, così come i cambiamenti che si verificano quando la società si evolve", dice di questo lavoro. "Quello che voglio ottenere è catturare la nobiltà, la familiarità e la cordialità dei contadini cubani". Fotografa questo senza sentimentalismo o melodramma, ma con un certo tipo di emozione. E oltre a questo, il suo lavoro ha anche un carattere antropologico, poiché documenta la vita e i costumi che potrebbero perdersi con lo sviluppo di Cuba. Insieme alle immagini delle serie "Ciudad", "Fe por San Lázaro" e "Ocaso", Raúl Cañibano ci fa sentire il cuore e l'anima di Cuba in modo sensuale. Le sue immagini sono identitarie e vere. Sono anche la confessione di Cañibano alla sua patria, che non potrebbe essere più chiara: "Cuba è un paese fantastico per la fotografia documentaria e ogni giorno ringrazio Dio per la mia vita... ma solo se posso vivere a Cuba per sempre". We can fully agree with the enthusiasm of the Austrian publisher Edition Lammerhuber, who published the photographic work "Absolutely Cuba" by Raúl Cañibano last year and announced it as follows: "The ultimate declaration of love by Raúl Cañibano - one of the most gifted photographers in Latin America - to his homeland Cuba! Images of tradition, happiness, tragedy and magic: there is no more beautiful, cleverer, more sensual and better way to photograph the feeling of life on the largest island in the Caribbean." Consequently, the book was also published in the "Visual Poetry" series of the publishing house, which has already won the FEP European Book Prize of the Year several times.
Now we are showing the photographer for the first time in an exhibition in Hanover.

Cañibano overwhelms the viewer with his special gaze, even where seemingly everything is already known. In the very ordinary everyday of urban life, he extracts a magic from the motifs that often goes into the surreal. This makes him one of the most outstanding photographers in Latin America and links him visually to the magical realism literature of Márquez and the painting of Frida Kahlo.
His block of works, "Tierra Guajira," is a tribute to the Cuban peasant. "My intention is to document a way of life that could fade over the years, as well as the changes that occur as society evolves," he says of this work. "What I want to achieve is to capture the nobility, familiarity and friendliness of Cuban farmers." He photographs this without sentimentality or melodrama, but with a certain kind of emotion. And besides that, his work also has an anthropological character, as he documents life and customs that could be lost with the development of Cuba. According to Spanish curator Mabel Llevat, Raul Cañibano manages to "capture the spirit of the Cuban nation in his photographs, its happiness and at the same time its tragedies, its traditions and customs." And art historian and museum director Erika Billeter, who died in 2011, said of his Cuba images, "He looks at reality from behind haze and veils and as a shadowy figure. That's what makes the irresistible magic of these photographs."
Together with images from the series "Ciudad", "Fe por San Lázaro" and "Ocaso", Raúl Cañibano makes us feel the heart and soul of Cuba in a sensual way. His paintings are identity-forming and true. They are also Cañibano's confession to his homeland, which cannot be more clear: "Cuba is a fantastic country for documentary photography and every day I thank God for my life...but only if I can live in Cuba forever." A unique declaration of love from an extraordinary photographer and man.
