A Journey through the Ballenesque

Die Ausstellung zeigt Werke aus fünf verschiedenen Serien – ‘Colour Work’, ‘The Theatre of Apparitions’, ‘Asylum of the Birds’, ‘Boarding House’ und ‘Shadow Chamber’ - und erkundet dabei einige der wichtigsten Etappen von Ballens kreativer Reise. Nachdem er mehr als fünfzig Jahre lang ausschliesslich in Schwarzweiss fotografiert hat, wendet sich Ballen jüngst auch Arbeiten in Farbe zu, von denen eine Auswahl in der Ausstellung und damit erstmals in der Schweiz gezeigt wird. Des Weiteren ist ein ganzer Bereich der Galerie der Serie ‘The Theater of Apparitions’ gewidmet, wobei die Arbeiten zum ersten Mal nach der diesjährigen Biennale in Venedig als Leuchtkästen in einem abgedunkelten Raum gezeigt werden. Aus der Serie ‘Asylum of the Birds’ sind einige der wichtigsten Schlüsselwerke zu sehen, von welchen einzelne derzeit auch im Tinguely Museum Basel im Rahmen der Ausstellung ‘Call of the Void’ ausgestellt sind. Ein weiteres Highlight der Ausstellung sind eine Auswahl von bisher noch nie veröffentlichten Vintage Prints aus den Serien ‘Boarding House’ und ‘Shadow Chamber’.
Roger Ballen, 1950 in New York City geboren, lebt seit 1982 in Südafrika und ist einer der wichtigsten Fotografen seiner Generation. Sein Oeuvre, das sich über fünf Jahrzehnte erstreckt, begann mit dem Gebiet der Dokumentarfotografie, entwickelte sich aber hin zur Schaffung unverwechselbarer fiktionalisierter Welten, die auch die Medien Film, Installation, Theater, Skulptur, Malerei und Zeichnung integrieren. Ballen beschreibt seine Werke als ‘existenzielle Psychodramen’, die das Unterbewusstsein berühren und die Schattenseiten der menschlichen Existenz hervorrufen. Sie zielen darauf ab, die verdrängten Gedanken und Gefühle zu durchbrechen, indem sie ihn mit Themen wie Chaos und Ordnung, Wahnsinn oder widerspenstige Seinszustände, die Beziehung des Menschen zur Tierwelt, Leben und Tod, universelle Archetypen der Psyche und Erfahrungen von Andersartigkeit beschäftigen. Durch seine einzigartige, komplexe Bildsprache und seine universellen und tiefgründigen Themen hat der Künstler einen nachhaltigen Beitrag zur Kunst geleistet.
Roger Ballen hat über 25 Bücher international veröffentlicht und ist in Sammlungen der prominentesten Museen der Welt vertreten. Seine jüngste Publikation mit dem Titel ‘Roger the Rat’ wurde 2020 von Hatje Cantz veröffentlicht. 2017 veröffentlichte Thames and Hudson sein Buch 'Ballenesque, Roger Ballen - A Retrospective', eine bedeutende Retrospektive seiner sämtlichen Werke. Kürzlich brachte Thames and Hudson einen zweiten Band als Taschenbuch heraus. Ballen ist auch der Verfasser mehrerer hochgelobter und ausgestellter Kurzfilme, die mit seinen fotografischen Serien einhergehen. 2022 war er einer der Künstler, die Südafrika auf der Venice Biennale Arte 2022 vertraten. Er ist ausserdem der Gründer und Direktor des Inside Out Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg, das im März 2023 eröffnet wurde. Ziel des Zentrums ist es, durch Ausstellungen und Bildungsprogramme ein Bewusstsein für afrikabezogene Themen zu schaffen. Die erste Ausstellung mit dem Titel ‘End of the Game’ befasst sich mit der Dezimierung der Wildtiere in Afrika anhand von historischen Artefakten und Ballens Fotografien und Installationen.
L'exposition présente des œuvres issues de cinq séries différentes - 'Colour Work', 'The Theatre of Apparitions', 'Asylum of the Birds', 'Boarding House' et 'Shadow Chamber' - et explore ainsi quelques-unes des principales étapes du voyage créatif de Ballen. Après avoir photographié exclusivement en noir et blanc pendant plus de cinquante ans, Ballen s'est récemment tourné vers des travaux en couleur, dont une sélection est présentée dans l'exposition, et donc pour la première fois en Suisse. En outre, un espace entier de la galerie est consacré à la série 'The Theater of Apparitions', dont les travaux sont présentés pour la première fois après la Biennale de Venise de cette année sous forme de caissons lumineux dans une pièce obscurcie. Quelques-unes des œuvres clés les plus importantes de la série 'Asylum of the Birds' sont présentées, dont certaines sont également exposées actuellement au Tinguely Museum de Bâle dans le cadre de l'exposition 'Call of the Void'. Un autre point fort de l'exposition est une sélection de tirages vintage encore jamais publiés des séries 'Boarding House' et 'Shadow Chamber'.

Elles visent à briser les pensées et les sentiments refoulés en l'amenant à aborder des thèmes tels que le chaos et l'ordre, la folie ou les états d'être récalcitrants, la relation de l'homme avec le monde animal, la vie et la mort, les archétypes universels de la psyché et les expériences de l'altérité. Grâce à son langage visuel unique et complexe et à ses thèmes universels et profonds, l'artiste a apporté une contribution durable à l'art.
Roger Ballen a publié plus de 25 livres au niveau international et fait partie des collections des musées les plus en vue du monde. Sa dernière publication, intitulée 'Roger the Rat', a été publiée par Hatje Cantz en 2020. En 2017, Thames and Hudson a publié son livre 'Ballenesque, Roger Ballen - A Retrospective', une importante rétrospective de l'ensemble de ses œuvres. Récemment, Thames and Hudson a publié un deuxième volume en livre de poche. Ballen est également l'auteur de plusieurs courts métrages très appréciés et exposés, qui vont de pair avec ses séries photographiques. En 2022, il a été l'un des artistes qui ont représenté l'Afrique du Sud à la Biennale Arte 2022 de Venise. Il est également le fondateur et le directeur de l'Inside Out Centre for the Arts à Johannesburg, qui a ouvert ses portes en mars 2023. L'objectif du centre est de sensibiliser le public aux questions liées à l'Afrique par le biais d'expositions et de programmes éducatifs. La première exposition, intitulée 'End of the Game', traite de la décimation de la faune sauvage en Afrique à travers des artefacts historiques et des photographies et installations de Ballen.
La mostra presenta opere tratte da cinque serie diverse - "Colour Work", "The Theatre of Apparitions", "Asylum of the Birds", "Boarding House" e "Shadow Chamber" - che esplorano alcune delle tappe fondamentali del percorso creativo di Ballen. Dopo aver fotografato esclusivamente in bianco e nero per più di cinquant'anni, Ballen si è recentemente dedicato al lavoro a colori, di cui una selezione è esposta in mostra, per la prima volta in Svizzera. Inoltre, un'intera sezione della galleria è dedicata alla serie "Il teatro delle apparizioni", con le opere che vengono mostrate per la prima volta dopo la Biennale di Venezia di quest'anno sotto forma di light box in una stanza buia. Sono esposte alcune delle opere chiave più importanti della serie "Asylum of the Birds", alcune delle quali sono attualmente esposte anche al Museo Tinguely di Basilea nell'ambito della mostra "Call of the Void". Un altro punto forte della mostra è una selezione di stampe d'epoca mai pubblicate della serie "Boarding House" e "Shadow Chamber".

Roger Ballen ha pubblicato oltre 25 libri a livello internazionale ed è presente nelle collezioni dei più importanti musei del mondo. La sua pubblicazione più recente, intitolata "Roger the Rat", è stata pubblicata da Hatje Cantz nel 2020. Nel 2017 Thames and Hudson ha pubblicato il libro "Ballenesque, Roger Ballen - A Retrospective", una grande retrospettiva di tutti i suoi lavori. The exhibition features works from five different series - 'Colour Work', 'The Theatre of Apparitions', 'Asylum of the Birds', 'Boarding House' and 'Shadow Chamber' - exploring some of the key stages of Ballen's creative journey. Having photographed exclusively in black-and-white for more than fifty years, Ballen has recently turned his attention to works in color, a selection of which will be shown in the exhibition, and thus for the first time in Switzerland. Furthermore, an entire section of the gallery is dedicated to the series 'The Theater of Apparitions', with the works being shown for the first time after this year's Venice Biennale as light boxes in a darkened room. Some of the most important key works from the series 'Asylum of the Birds' are on display, some of which are currently also on display at the Tinguely Museum Basel as part of the exhibition 'Call of the Void'. Another highlight of the exhibition is a selection of never before published vintage prints from the series 'Boarding House' and 'Shadow Chamber'.
Roger Ballen, born in New York City in 1950, has lived in South Africa since 1982 and is one of the most important photographers of his generation. His oeuvre, which spans five decades, began in the field of documentary photography but evolved into the creation of distinctive fictionalized worlds that also integrate the media of film, installation, theater, sculpture, painting, and drawing. Ballen describes his works as 'existential psychodramas' that touch the subconscious and evoke the darker side of human existence. They aim to break through repressed thoughts and feelings by engaging him with themes such as chaos and order, madness or unruly states of being, man's relationship to the animal world, life and death, universal archetypes of the psyche, and experiences of otherness. Through his unique, complex imagery and his universal and profound themes, the artist has made a lasting contribution to art.

His most recent publication, entitled 'Roger the Rat', was published by Hatje Cantz in 2020. Ballen is also the author of several highly acclaimed and exhibited short films to go along with his photographic series. In 2022, he was one of the artists representing South Africa at the Venice Biennale Arte 2022. He is also the founder and director of the Inside Out Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg, which opened in March 2023. The center aims to create awareness of Africa-related issues through exhibitions and educational programs. The first exhibition, titled 'End of the Game,' addresses the decimation of wildlife in Africa through historical artifacts and Ballen's photographs and installations.
